** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Another sudoku today from the ever-excellent yttrio - this time using "Parity Islands" to create fascinating logic all over the grid! The rule is so simple we can't really believe it's not been done before. If you have some time you really must try this one!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Orthogonally connected cells of the same parity (odd vs. even) are parity islands. A digit in a circle indicates the size of the island that cell is in.

I love solving parity puzzles. The fact you can use shading and look out for "4 of the same in a sudoku unit" really helps cut down the amount of scanning required and puts me in a very happy place. Combining that with island logic made for something I had an absolute blast with, even if my solve was somewhat convoluted -- relying on seeing that if the central digit's island went to the east, that would fill row 5 in box 6 with odds and break the 9 region. I was happy to clock in at 41:24 after that little detour still didn't prevent me from needing to apply the required logic in box 3. Really, really lovely stuff. Thank you yttrio for the puzzle, and thanks Simon for drawing our attention to it!

Simon! I love watching you solve and have been watching a CTC video every day during my lunch at work for at least the past 4 years. Thank you for solving these (I rarely if ever leave comments). I have one request, and one note about the solve. At the end of this solve, when you were looking to disambiguate the islands, you could have looked at the number of odds and evens in columns 1 and two (which is using sudoku, but in a less strict sense). As for my request, I absolutely loved the pencil puzzle series you did a while back. Can you make a video where you solve a handful of shorter, star battle type puzzles? It would make an amazing Christmas gift! Thank you for all that you do again!

An alternative way of reaching the conclusion at 11:30 is to know that if the even digits took the first four cells of r4 to make an 8-cell island, and the rest of the digits in box 4 were odd, then you have a problem with the second circle in r5, at r5c4. It couldn't be either even or odd, as it would be the same odd digit as in r5c1, or it would be even, and make the region larger than 8. And then, alternatively, at 32:55, r7c3 cannot be joined to the staircase island from box 5, as it would need to be either 4 or 8 to indicate the size of the island, and both of those are already taken up in c3 by a 48 pair. A little bit easier to see for me than the logic shown.

Box 7 is what killed my run. I was *determined* that the only way to arrange 4 even digits in Box 7 to satisfy the 9 island above it was to fill the bottom row and place the remaining on the right of the middle row. I didn't even see the arrangement that Simon did here. Ugh! Almost all of my numbers were correct, too! Oh well, onto the next sudoku I guess, hahaha!

Random tip: If you want to count all the circles just double click to select them and fill them with 1s, the sum is the total. Not necessarily useful here but for other puzzles.

Does the software actually display the sum anywhere? If not, you still just have to count the 1s right?

A technique i like better to count circles is to fill all the circles with 9s, then you add up how many nines there are and then divide by 9

Pro-level: Fill all the empty cells with 5s, sum them up, subtract from 405, then divide by 5.

An alternative way would be to select the whole grid and give them a colour. Then double click on a circle to remove the coloruing of circles, then you can double click on a coloured circle to fill them with 1s. Lastly subtract the sum of 1s from the number 81.

How does he forget the rules so fast? @12:41 he can't figure out why R3-6C4 can't all be blue when they run through two circles that see one another. Maddening.

I found this one particularly annoying. I must have restarted a dozen times because of R1C9. Why? It was an island with no circle! After despairing of my logic, I broke down and watched the first few minutes of Simon's solution, only to be completely flabbergasted as he isolated R1C9 without even a comment about an unmarked island. While I know the instructions don't insist that each island has a circle, they also don't say it's ok for an island to not have circle. That distinction becomes pretty important! Perhaps the rules could be modified to include that precious nugget? Once I accepted that unmarked islands were ok, it became a lot more fun, but that still left a bad taste in my mouth.

@@efa666 I'm not offended, I'm offering my opinion on how to improve the videos. This is one of Simon's tics that I dislike. I'm sorry you're offended by my opinion, I just happen to think this channel would be better if it acknowledged most watchers don't need their hands held through the most basic principles on each and every video. You can also offer your opinion. I promise I won't be, and am not, offended, even if I disagree.
