So loved this video. As a pre-diabetic I have been advised to avoid starchy foods. I do have a question what do you think of SEAWEED? I heard it has natural salts and lots of nutrients 😊.

I was also pre-diabetic, and went full force into plant-based and SOS-free diet and gained my health back 100%! The whole starchy foods thing is ridiculous when the elephant in the room is the processed foods and added oils and salts (and of course sugars). Oils and animal fats are some of the worst causes of diabetes (hence being overweight is a well-known but rarely-discussed risk factor for diabetes). According to the NIH, "dietary fats are known to impair insulin sensitivity and to enhance hepatic glucose production" and they "acutely increase glucose production" and "lead to a lag in glucose production". So, you're producing too much and are even less able to process it. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3609492/ So no, the issue isn't potatoes that are the problem, it's fats that turn those healthy potatoes into poison. Even sugars (natural, like in fruits, etc) are not the culprit, it's fats that turn them into poison. Again, unsure why doctors still harp on something as benign as starches, which are one of the key parts of any plant-based diet, and are primary in many cultures in the world that are healthier than Americans...

As for seaweed, we did some of that at first, but we are now so detoxed from added salts that we can immediately feel the ill effects of eating seaweed. This may be because seaweed is often served with salt as an addictive, or even because it is grown in salt brine/seawater, so it could have salts "added" by simply absorbing or crystalizing the seawater, though this might not always be the case, not really sure, tbh, just know it affects our eyes and other signs of inflammation when we eat it nowadays. But there may be forms of it that have low enough naturally-produced sodium. But then the question is, how accessible/sustainable is it, really? Especially if you're land-locked... There are SO many vegetables out there that have the same critical nutrients, including iodine, etc. that you can grow in your back yard or buy at the supermarket no matter where you're located (like any greens or carrots), so it doesn't make sense to make seaweed a priority in any case--unless you just enjoy the taste. That's our two cents, at least 😊

@@familiapablanu would you say that natural sugars from maple syrup, coconut sugar, natural organic cane sugar, date syrup or just dates them selves should also be avoided?
@familiapablanu4 ай бұрын
@@triste248 If it's processed in form of syrup, granules etc or dehydrated fruits, you can easily over-eat it and the result is inflammation. For example, it takes about 3 ft of sugar cane to make one teaspoon of sugar granules. No one would give 3 ft sugar cane to a child to eat or themselves. Your mouth would be so exhausted after a little bit of chewing. So that makes it impossible to over-eat, but one can easily add 2 tablespoon (24 grams), equals about 6 ft of sugar cane, into their food. Same goes for any type of syrup/honey... So it's better to stay away from them altogether. You can use fresh fruits with its juices and fibers intact instead.

I am enjoying your family experiences and feeling a little green with envy. My family traveled to Uganda in 2007 and we ate and ate! Since you make bread, you can make sandwiches using those little bananas and/or avocados. I have never tested jackfruit. I don't like the smell. I was excited when I saw a can of ground nuts in the supermarket. I bought a can, around $3 but they were too salty for me. As P said I have seen passion fruit in the supermarket but they are wrinkly and cost $3-5. Yesterday I was in Whole Foods and saw guavas for $5/each. I was almost tempted. You are leaving the good life. I watched another video of an American family, who recently moved to Uganda and were disappointed by the lack of fast food chains in Kampala. As Socrates said, "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."

As a prediabetic I worry about starchy foods but I would love try coco yam. Anyway it also seems like they are important to reduce hunger feelings

I was also pre-diabetic, and these foods saved me from going further down that path 😊 Starches are completely healthy in their natural form. Simple boiled tubers, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc are complex carbs and starches and they are digested and processed well by the body, unlike the processed sugars in pastries, sodas, candies, canned foods, or anything with sugars or syrups. Those are free sugars and will go straight to your bloodstream even if your body doesn't need it. When it comes to fresh fruits, you need those vitamins and minerals, but be careful of over eating sugar cane or any fruits that taste way too sugary, like grapes or bananas. 😊
