I have this problem all the time with newer big guys stacking the living shit out of me in my guard. I'll put these to the test. I'm a small guy so this happens a lot. I've been working on getting my feet on the hips and just simply pushing away. But this looks like a great technique. Thank you, Oss. Budo Jiu-Jitsu in Vancouver, BC.

As a big guy I really appreciate this. We usually don't experience this so when it happens we get a little lost lol. This help alot.

I did this move to a blue belt whose got 30lbs on me and loves to stack and neck crank from within your guard. it worked nicely. once I put in the butterfly and then got to half guard I put on a lockdown and he tapped to the knee pressure. "oh my knee has been hurting" haha. thanks man!

C M nice! He will think twice about stacking next time!

2 stripe white belt here and at 34 years old I hate being paired up with the younger, athletic 20 year old white belts that always fight to the death and usually end up injuring me. I got stacked hard last night at training (which resulted in a day off work today) and all I could think to do was squeeze the crap out of his ribs whilst he stacked me in guard. I will be trying this sweep for sure but what should I do when he has my lapels gripped and elbows dug into my stomach as I'm being stacked? The pressure on my neck is awful and very dangerous too.
@benegli28473 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question, sorry your training partners sound a little rough. If they are stacking with their elbows in your stomach you will still want to use your legs and hips to extended your body, but you’ll want frame on their shoulders and shrimp or shoulder walk away to prevent the stack. Once you stop the stack try to keep their hands on the ground and off your body.

I'm about 7 months in, and I honestly find newcomers more difficult than the others who have been training for several months with me. If I get pinned by a complete newbie, I'm stuck there the rest of the round. If I get pinned by one of my fellow "upper" white belts, typically they give up on an attack and transition, at which point there's an opening. Upper belts will transition without leaving me an opening, but that's a different problem.

That is pretty normal so don’t feel bad! If someone starts to pass your guard try to get to your side and frame before they settle their weight when you’re flat. People tend to fight too long for a bad position, and it makes everything worse. I hope that helps!

Wouldn’t it be easier sweep the opposite direction at 2:10 ? Chop the bases away and flip far side leg across? Does his size and weight take that ability away?
@benegli28474 жыл бұрын
If you are not able to get to your side I would use the butterfly hook to destabilize his leg like I showed, but if you can turn to the side (right side in this case) you can go the other way.

I got stacked by a big guy, I'm also decently sized, and strong. He has been a white belt for like 2.5 years, I've been one for just over two months. He had his elbow on my face the whole time, with all his weight, it sucked.

But what about when the guy doesn't stack? I have a big guy laying on me in closed guard but because he's a white belt he doesn't even post on his knees properly, he just lays flat on me so there's no space to work the sweep. In other words, I can't get my legs under his legs, he's just flat. What do I do?

Is it possible/feasible to loop the non butterfly hooking leg over the opponents other leg and collapse it to a knee, then elevator sweep?
@benegli28477 жыл бұрын
It is possible, but it would be difficult against a much bigger opponent. If I need more help I often put the second leg in as a butterfly hook, or put it on the hip and push away.

As a white belt, why would I want to give up full guard for half guard, especially when I suck at half guard? Thanks for all of the great work you do!
@benegli28477 жыл бұрын
You will only be in half guard for a moment, and you must pass through that position to take the back. If you start this sweep and get nervous you can always go back to closed guard. I didn't start getting good at half guard until i was a 2 stripe blue belt.
@elenchus7 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to add (despite me being vastly inferior to Ben) that you're starting out with a very advantageous half guard position here. You're already out to the side, not underneath your opponent, which is a very aggressive half guard position that is used for sweeps and back takes. It's almost less of a half guard and more of a half turtle (for the opponent) if that makes sense.
@jordanpir685 жыл бұрын
you probably realised this one year after but in jiujitsu if you want to be good , never play closed guard ..close guard is an invention for white and blue belts
@olemew5 жыл бұрын
@@jordanpir68 you will probably find out next year that closed guard is played at the right moment by virtually every black belt out there, including top level guys like Roger Gracie , if that name rings a bell for you...

Very nice to know. How to escape the armlock of the big guy seems like he didn't lock you very good by the neck here. What kind of microphone you using? Sound is clear but could increase in quality a bit. Thanks for the great content.
