Oh! By the way, my voice coach gave me some of her sourdough starter and I’ve been making sourdough each week. It comes out so good!! Much of what I make I bring to the Friday Cafe where I help make food for unhoused folks, the elderly, and folks dealing w/ food insecurity. I couldn’t possibly eat it all myself and the guests really love it. ❤ In fact, this year, instead of cookies/sweet treats for my friends for Christmas, I decided I’m going to make them homemade soup and a loaf of bread as their gifts. I thought since there are so many sweets during the holidays, what if I gave the gift of a meal that warms their heart and is economical to boot! And they get a night off from cooking.

Split pea soup! I use a bag of dried split peas and I buy ham hocks when they're on clearance and freeze them. Once the ham hock is cooked it can be stripped of the meat and makes plenty enough for every bowl to have some meat in it. Here's the secret: after the soup is done cooking, but before putting the ham pieces back into it, take out about 2 cups of it, then use an immersion blender in the remaining pea soup. Add back the 2 cups and the ham pieces. It makes the soup creamy but also has some of the split peas for texture. I also like to add carrot pieces if I have them; it gives the soup a sweetness. Thank you for sharing your money saving tips. I hope many younger folks are watching so they can take care of their families well even in these hard times.

Thank you Emmy and Paul for another fantastic video!! The favourite cold weather meal in our household is my pumpkin beef/pork stew in the crockpot (8 hours on low). Beef or pork cubes, 2 cups of homemade pumpkin puree, some veggie/chicken stock, potatoes, mushrooms, carrots, onion, garlic, rosemary and thyme clippings and various seasonings. Beans can be added, but lately we have been doing pot barley about 45 mins at the end. Most recipes say to sauté the meat first with flour, but I just add it in the crockpot raw first with salt, pepper and flour and that way it pulls a part when comes time to eat, very melt-in-your-mouth! Then I add everything else on top.

Grilled cheese sandwiches with cream of tomato soup! My mother made grilled cheese by slathering hearty homemade sourdough bread with mustard on the inside and butter on the outside and put cheese on every slice of bread, then she chopped finely minced tomatoes and bell peppers onto the bread, popped them into the broiler until everything was brown and bubbly, slapped the sandwich together and we had homemade (never from a can!) cream of tomato soup. I love to make chili or vegetable beef soup. For the soup, I add 1 pound cooked ground chuck to a pot with a 46 oz bottle of V8 juice. Add veggies of your voice. I like to use celery, onion, carrots, Lima beans, corn, peas and diced potatoes (dice small so they cook evenly with other veggies). I do prep my veggie blend ahead of time and freeze them so I do cook them in butter or olive oil as I cook the ground chuck. I then add everything to one pot and cook until veggies are tender. I typically only season with salt, pepper and basil.

Hi Emmy & Paul from Southwest Florida! I’ve been subscribed and watching for a year and I can’t thank you enough for all the great content you so lovingly share. I’m always learning from you guys and this great community you’ve grown. My grandparents lived through the depression and I learned a lot of my frugality from them and I chuckle every time I shut the light switch, reuse tin foil, cut napkins in half, etc. because I’m so tickled and blessed to have had that growing up. Now Emmy, because of your love of aprons, which I wear more now because of you, I just had to share this with you…I think others will love it as well…I cried when I read it just for the sentiment and memories of my grandma…so her you go…with much love to you and many blessings…. The History of 'APRONS' I don't think most kids today know what an apron is. The principle use of Mom's or Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.. And when the weather was cold, she wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, she walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Mom's and Grandma's used to set hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love

I am trying to talk my husband into quitting the use of plastic K cups. We have some of those reusable wire mesh cups you can use, and he did use them for a while. But now it’s back to the convenience of the plastic ones. He is so stubborn! About a year ago I made my own cloth rectangular towels to substitute for paper towels. I used cloth remnant on one side and a piece of a cut up old towel. I love using them to put toast or sandwiches on. They can also be used as a kitchen rag to wash dishes or wipe up spills. But I still use paper towels to deal with grease and oil that needs to be sopped up after cooking hamburgers or sausage. Now if I could just train my husband to quit reaching for the paper towels! 🤣 ❤️-Brenda

Two meals tonight, and we will finish it off tomorrow night! I even made my own sweet and sour sauce from a recipe I found online! I make various forms of chili. I often use lentils but also ground chicken is good. I throw a can black beans, crushed and diced tomatoes, a bit of water or broth, lots of hot chili powder and cumin and a can of corn. It’s cheap and easy, I pretty much eat it everyday as my main meal. I worked it out once and with lentils it’s less than 90 cents a serving. With ground chicken or turkey it’s around $2.50. Also, if anyone does weight watchers it’s a zero point meal! I cook pretty much 100% of all our meals at home, i end up not really liking most “out” foods and they are getting insanely expensive from what I can see. As the weather gets cooler and root vegs are in season I like to make all kinds of soups, stews and casseroles. Lot's of root vegetables, maybe some pearl barley and you only need a smidgeon of meat. Another favourite this time of year is bubble and squeak (great for using up your left over veg), paired with a fried egg or as I allergic to eggs with a sausage.

Hello Emmy and Paul. Cold weather favorite from a Long Island born and raised, Kentucky living girl. Good old fashioned Chicken Soup. We keep all the bones from dinner and make a big batch of soup. So warm and comforting.

Curried veg & rice, spaghetti bolognese or lasagne. It doesn’t have to have meat. You can use canned fish. Soups from leftover veg, apple stuffed with dried fruit.

Dear Emmy, You and Paul are so inspiring. I really appreciated Paul teaching how to use a log splitter, and your ravioli looks so delicious and cozy. You twanged my heartstrings: When my father retired early, my mom opened a shop, and he was suddenly in charge of cooking for a large family. He donned his apron and taught himself to cook by cooking his way through the Betty Crocker cookbook--the one you have! He became an excellent cook and he always gave that cookbook the credit. Thank you for the sweet memory!

I no longer use a coffee pot. I bought a glass carafe that comes with a stainless steel filter. I love making coffee using the Pour Over method. I do use a paper filter inside my filter and the grounds and paper filters go into the compost bin.

I use them light weight plastic, a lot as my disability makes normal plates heavy. We do the same with the hankies etc. and I got a tassimo as easier for my hot chocolate as pre done and I can do myself , put the pod in and press one button. But we also brought the reusable one. I chicken and bacon pasta with peas and mum makes it with a lasagna white says- very simple. I know it’s all brought and put together not made- but with my disabilities I can’t- others may make pasta but I can’t. So we have to do what we can. Thanks for today it’s made me think too.

@@FrugalMoneySaver with my autism I struggle with flavours and mixes of flavours. So it may sound silly but I tend eat what my mum call ‘kids food’ lol as there isn’t too many flavours . Also when we find something we like it’s a keeper. As I say I know I can’t make my own sauce or pasta etc but if others wanted to use the recipe as a base and then make bits themselves I’m sure it would add different tastes in. Thought I’d dare anyways.

@@FrugalMoneySaver another one I like that’s slightly different is like a shepherds pie but instead of potato mash on top we use sweet potato on top as I really like it. So we use minced meat, onion, carrots, peas, and onion gravy (only one I like) and then the sweet potato mash on top. Obviously again you can adapt the ingredients if you want more veggies or some garlic or something or a different gravy mix or make it your self- I know mum uses different stuff for the family at her house… Hope this is an idea others may try.

My baked penne. It is made with Johnsonville Hot Italian Sausage. I brown the sausage with green pepper and onion, adding it to Prego Mushroom Tomato Sauce. I add oregano, a bit of garlic powder oh and a smattering of salt and pepper. I prepare the penne, not rinsing it. About 3/4's of a box. Using a 11 X13 inch pan, I layer the noodles and pieces of cream cheese along with the sauce, now is when it begins to be work. I use 2 to 4 cups of mozzarella cheese, or a variety of mozzarella and romano or another mix of Mexican and asiago, etc. It depends on the day! This all has to be mixed very well together, it takes a while to do this well. Cover and cook in a 350 oven, checking it after about 45 mins. to see if the edges look bubbly. Keep your eye on it and it needs to be bubbling in the center to be done. This is a dish you can vary according to your own taste. Most people love this dish. All the ingredients amount to around $20 at today's inflated prices, but it feeds many people.

Sadly the OR’s in hospitals throw away the blue surgical towels needed for each surgery case. Even if they are never opened. As the nursing supervisor at a private facility I will not throw them away but save them to use for my cleaning rags. How wasteful throwing the away is!

I'm the only coffee drinker in our house and have only 1-2 cups a day. I use the refillable K-cups, the little paper filters and buy the large cans of my favorite ground coffee (when it's on sale). I did a cost comparison of using the premade K-cups (on sale!) vs my reusable cups and discovered I was saving about $1500 a year on average!

When my last Keurig coffee maker died, I never replaced it. I found it expensive ( even using the KCups you fill yourself) and the coffee wasn't strong enough for my taste. I have all sorts of coffee makers and coffee pots and I love the variety of drip, brew, pour over and French press. I put the leftovers in a vacuum sealed thermos and it stays tasty for later on.

A friend used to do a meal with a can of ravioli and a drained can of kidney or cannellini beans. Heat any way you want and eat with whatever cheese on top. It was a great emergency meal. I think adding the beans to your recipe would be great to up the protein inexpensively
