You're absolutely right, what we put in our bodies, the physical practices, the spiritual and emotional care all play a part in being our best selves. It's true, we can't control what other people say or do but we certainly can control how we react and as you mentioned, putting ourselves in someone else's shoes, helps to give us a better understanding.
