be aware of the coils, the original ones for BMW are with the white cap on the top of the coil, the black ones are aftermarket and are not so good especially if your car is tuned!

I own the 2014 528i with M Sport kit supercharged twin turbo engine. Bought it brand new and never experienced an issue at all except that you have to change the engine mount after 5 years because you will start to hear some noise when shifting the gear from N to D but changing the engine mount fixed the issue completely. Sensors and everything is great on this car.

@@SimpleCarGuy if you want to save your brakes, turn the DSC OFF by holding the Dynamic Traction Control button for 5 seconds. Downsides are that you obviously need to then be able to drive the car yourself without electronic assistance (abs still works) and if you turn cruise control on, the DSC goes on again, it also goes on again after every startup. This makes a pretty big difference on how fast your brake pads and discs wear. I don't recommend this to people who don't know how to drive without electronic aids. This applies to both RWD and xDrive models. Another tip i can give is to always turn the start&stop feature OFF when you start the car, it's just completely unnecessary wear on your starter motor, your engine and your turbochargers. Fuel and oil are cheap, turbochargers, engines and starter motors are not.

Pulley belt failed, drive belt was torn which made the alternator not charge the battery. So far $1644.00 to repair and I’m out of town traveling. Thank goodness the dealership I purchased it from is going to pay by credit card to repair this failure. Glad I found a BMW dealership that gave me a loaner for the night. @@rollydoucet8909 I had many problems with it. The turbo coolant lines melted due to the extreme heat of the V-design of the twin scroll turbos. The fuel pump also simultaneously failed AND cylinder head assembly valves. This was a certified purchase in 2018 with only 26k miles. Certification expired and its almost like the car sensed it. Repairs of $5 to 6k USD. I traded it in before absorbing that cost. I only had to pay the fuel pump for $1700. I will never own another BMW unless its leased or under warranty. These cars are amazing to drive but extremely unreliable. I have learned the hard way . It was a very very costly two years of ownership.

2010 528xi here. Just found out it has a transmission 4F85 CODE which is the eclutch bushing on the intake shaft. I'm mortified. I'm a woman, so when the mechanics see me coming, they know they can say whatever they want and I can't fight them. So I'm trying to do tons of research. They're automatically saying it's going to be a $3500 *minimum* to do rebuilt transmission. I was quoted $5000 by someone else for a transmission. I have had this car for exactly 4 years and it happened *immediately after* a brake job. I would swear the mechanic messed with it because when I picked it up from getting front brakes done he mentioned I'll need a transmission flush soon "due to some minor hesitation." There was minimal sluggishness when accelerating in first gear, but absolutely nothing abnormal that you couldn't "blow out" by premium gas and a little harder driving (I am a very gentle driver.) Within 2 weeks, the car suddenly started premature shifting, popping into gears, etc so I took it to a BMW tech who does it out of his house, and he said it's pouring fluid. Sure enough, I checked my driveway and there was a huge stain. Called the guy back and told him to plug in the scanner and he said he didn't need to because the problem was "obviously" caused by the leak. I made him scan it anyway and that's when he found the 4F85 code, and I started researching on my own while he fixed the leaking transmission pan. I got the car back and it *wasn't fixed!* Now I am furious, because he ignored the code and blamed that leak. But how do both problems arise out of nowhere??? Called the first mechanic and he said "wasn't leaking when it was here. Don't know what to tell you." 😡 I am a Christian and not a violent woman but let me tell you if I could figure out if he messed with this car, I'd make my life mission to make sure he never forgets my name. I have never heard of Transmissions having problems on these cars. Even transmission shops sound shocked. Have you ever heard of this issue? Either one of you?

@@SimpleCarGuy I'm now forced to give up, by the way. I am not paying that kind of money for a transmission so I'm going to sell it to pay off the balance and start over. I owned a 96' 328i in 2003- ran perfect for exactly 4 years until the engine caught fire one day due to "electrical wiring." Heartbroken, I sold it for parts. My next was a 2000' 528i, which I bought in 2007 and dealt with Vanos problems and minor issues, but it kept me going beautifully until I smacked a deer in 2012 and totaled it. Sold for parts. In 2013, my ex gave me a beaten on 2003 535i with the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, and someone had swapped out parts with the wrong ones and it looked like it was stripped, but it ran like a champ until 2017 when I finally got the 2010 528xi through a friend. This thing has run absolutely brilliantly and smooth, like a dream. I'm so upset about this transmission issue. But alas, as a typical stubborn German, I am determined to find now my 5th BMW. Can you give me your best recommendation for a model *prior to* 2015? I'm not going to be able to afford anything newer. I'm open to 3 series, 5 series or X5. It sounds like you really know your later models. I love the one in the video but I'm sure not going to need 550. I want one that takes bumps not so hard (I despise hitting bumps hard), smooth driving, a little attitude, and for God's sake the fewest problems possible. I *love* the look of yours. I'm depending on you! 🥰

It's a really nice car, no doubt! The valve stems are kind of mystery as far as I'm concerned. My buddy had his replaced at like 38k miles under warranty when the car started smoking like crazy. Just got rid of my 2011 528i, had to do an engine replacement, the constant oil leak issue from the valve cover gasket and finally the hard shifting transmission was the final blow. I absolutely loved the driving experience but the old f10 model cars can be a money pit. Once you hit 100k miles expect major problems with BMW
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Did you have to replace the engine because of the valve cover leak? It doesn't make a sense to swap the engine, but I could be wrong. You're right about the 100k, it's not that the cars go bad all of the sudden, it's just that many major services come up around that time and no one wants to pay up for them.

Great review, well done! I'm thinking of getting a 2015 535 (60k miles max) but worry about the reliability... Had another BMW for a couple of years and loved it - no doubt I'd love the 535 too but I'm put off by the prospect of having to get something fixed at least 1-2 times every year when things go wrong... And paying at least a few hundred $ per defect (if I'm lucky!) Anyways, keep it up!

That's an excellent choice if you want some performance without too much trouble. The problems I talk about in the video are of course over many different cars, so it's not like everyone will have issues. It's my daily driver since it is a company car. Have driven it for 2 years.... Total time in workshop for 2 years is 4 months lol. The 1st thing that went wrong after I got the car was the serpentine belt tensioner pulley actually came off. The bearing was fine but the pulley itself broke. After that is the oil leak from the head gasket, then the oil filter, then the crankseal. After that it was the front lower arm bushing, front strut mount, rear boot lid release, front passenger power window control, front passenger door latch, and the newest was the yellow grommet that cause a huge pool of water that killed the steering control module. The car was sent I on the 23rd of December 2019 for the yellow grommetand power steering control module fix and the car is still with bmw.

Good vid but what you named are mostly common items that should be replaced on any vehicle. Gaskets don’t last forever, neither do coils, spark plugs, wheel bearings, wipers, tires, bushings, belts.. etc, what you called out is normal wear and tear. A problem, my 2012 535xi had an exhaust valve spring break at 98k which costs $5k to fix at BMW.. that’s a problem. My power steering module went out every time I hit a puddle..that’s an $800 problem every time the underside of the car got wet...

You are correct, in US the naturally aspirated engine was only available in 2011. That being said...i love it when it on the road!! 😂 oh also just had a crack in the alloy, in process of getting the run flats off. I’m hoping I have done enough maintenance now and can finally enjoy it 😬 Edit: oh and the oil leak around the oil filter house caused the alternator belt to slip off and get chewed up 🙄

The 2011 model is the least recommended since it has the most issues. However, the 535i is probably the most reliable (other than early 528i), so as far the engine there are no issues there. With the early (2011) models, you want to look for maintenance or replacements done around battery issues, fuel pump, turbos, fuel injector and oil gaskets.

Thanks for this vid, glad to hear clear and to the point information not cluttered with overly modulated music that you have to adjust your volume 6 times...so annoying...sub’d and liked. I am looking at a 2013 550im with about 122,000 km or 75,000 miles. If I am buying used, with the customer car transfer over to me? What should I be looking for re the oil...how will I know if it’s burning too much? Re the customer care, and if it covers my me...and I bring it in to have it checked...they replace the timing chain for free? I heard the the big issue is the turbo placement and heat...would any of these service visits solve the issue or OS a regular maintenance/prevention thing. Sorry I know it’s a lot of questions but I really like the car...and want that 8cyl bud am scared shitless of a $6,000 bill which here in Canada would probably translate closer to $10K lol
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I'm not sure if the customer care is still active. I think it was only active for a few years, so you'd have to call your dealer and confirm. Luckily most cars have had it done to the car and should be good or if they haven't and lasted to 75k, they were probably not affected anyway. I would ask the dealer on the specific car as well, they might let you know if it was done or not. If the car is burning a lot of oil, you will see more than usual amount of black soot on the exhaust tips. Of course if you are the owner you will get a message saying oil is low, but harder when you are buying the car as no one will really tell you. Check the records for maintenance and see how well it was taken care of. If not that well, look for a 2014+ car as they have less issues.

What should I look out for on a 2015 550i with 126K miles?

I had the CCP work done on my 750 and it only helped a little. Ut still uses oil. About a quart every 700 1000 miles on the highway.

Excellent video! I’ve had a 2013 Bmw 535i for 2 years now, currently at 75k miles. Good car overall, replaced the axle boot kit on the passenger side, but other than that regular maintenance. Hoping to get 2 more years out of it and swap for something newer. What do you think is their max mileage capacity? I’ve seen over 100k miles for sale so hoping to get to at least that mark. Thanks!

You can easily hit 100k with proper maintenance. I think you can even get to 150k if you take care of it and change the oil every 5k miles (not bmw recommended). Keep an eye to make sure it's not burning excessive oil and no leaks, should be good for a while!

So what problems should we look for in the 2014 550i?
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 жыл бұрын
The general issues between pre-LCI and LCI I mentioned are the same. So. Excessive oil consumption, coils plugs going out early, valve stems and to lesser extent timing chains. Nothing too specific to LCI version only other than oil pump gasket and parking camera and sensors issues. Thanks for watching?

@@SimpleCarGuy I'm trying to buy a 2014 550 60k miles, it's well maintained but 2 years ago they had to change the crankshaft ventilation or flush it. I'm not really sure but it has to do with the crankshaft. Any advice will be appreciated

@SimpleCarGuy Why don't you install the M Sport exterior packet on it? It makes the car look totally different and more aggressive.

I like the non-aggressive look on the this car; especially, when I blow the doors off sports cars. The reaction on people’s faces is priceless

Vapour seals fail on rear doors leading to water ingress into rear passenger foot wells. On RHD versions water ingress from grommet behind glove box.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a real pain to to fix if it's behind the glove box. Would the dash have to come out for the fix?
@cattflap1447
@cattflap1447 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleCarGuy No, you can get to it from behind the glovebox. The real problem is the sound proofing in the engine bay that covers the grommet doesn't have enough drainage so it slowly fills with water and the grommet perishes. I removed the sound proofing on mine and cut drainage holes in in it. Google f10 water leak and you'll find a link to the UK forum 5 site, has about 30 pages on these water issues :D
