Then the height of your jump is directly correlated to your horizontal speed, so if you're traveling very fast you can indeed jump very high BUT in this case you have a lot of negative speed, so your jump will actually downwarp you instead, so that strategy is probably doomed

I understand you trying to stay simple, but it's important that sliding speed is directional. If Mario's sliding speed is moving in the X+ direction and Mario is sliding, he will moving in the X+ direction regardless of the angle he's facing. If he's facing the X- direction, he'll have negative speed. If he's facing the X+ direction, he'll have positive speed.

The way the high speed water thing works is that you conserve your sliding speed in the water so that if you press Z the same frame you come out of water you keep that speed, also works with poles and trees

when you enter water with speed, you only conserve sliding speed. usually, your normal speed gets copied over to your sliding speed, but when doing any sort of sliding, it's the oposite. so if on the first frame of exiting the water you start sliding, you will conserve your speed. (you do that with a frame perfect z press)
