The only 2 reasons to why B787-8 is more efficient is the fact that they could carry more passengers on longer flights. On medium haul operations, fuel burn are quite comparable since B767-300ER and B767-400ER doesn't have the heavy wings/wingbox that B787-8 have. The shorter the range is, the more efficient B767 became compared to B787-8.

Probably one of my favourite airliners to travel on. Two aisles make boarding fast, they usually have higher ceilings and make the coach cabin seem spacious, and the 2-3-2 seating is just civilized. Love the 767!

Reliability, the airframe was built and engineered before the Boeing and MD merger, so you know it was built with safety and quality than shareholder value cutting corners. I'm surprised carriers are buying new builds coming off the KC-46 line, I heard UPS and FEDEX have orders on that line.

Though it wasn't my first 767 flight, my most memorable trip aboard a 767 was an SAS flight from Chicago to Stockholm. It happened in the spring of 1999, before 9/11 forced all airlines to lock their passengers out of the flight deck from pushback to wheelstop. Having recently (at the time) watched a VHS tape about flying Concorde, it was mentioned in the voiceover that since British Airways was not a US-flag carrier, passengers were allowed to visit the cockpit in flight. So, I asked a flight attendant if I could go up front whilst the plane was in the air. She arranged it, and once the relief pilot had awakened from his nap, I was ushered up to the flight deck as the aircraft approached the west coast of Greenland. What an awe-inspiring experience! Looking out a passenger window will never compare to the view out the windshield, and the snow-covered mountains in the field of view only made it all the more spectacular. What was equally incredible was how quiet it was. I would compare the noise to being in a Lincoln Town Car moving at 40 MPH on a smooth highway with no crosswind. For a lifelong coach passenger accustomed to sitting in cheap seats over the wing with low bypass engines slung underneath, I couldn't believe it was possible to find such a quiet place aboard a cruising airliner.

The 787 has been plagued with multiple problems and the FAA has at times grounded them, Boeing today isn’t the company the created great engineered jets of the past. The McDonnell way of building crushed Douglas and is now the problem at Boeing. To many bean counters trying to save money left and right which is the problem with all of the 737 MAX series, 777x and 787. Airbus is the best manufacturer and engineered commercial aircraft manufacturer in the world.
