The Lufthansa case is a bit different because there is a single European market. So they can have a much stronger integration than Qatar ever could

They’ve allowed their second most important investment - LATAM - to slip into a hands of a competing alliance, so none other (than IAG) really matter after that. And an acquisition of Virgin Aus can eventually force Qantas to leave OW.
@jgnclvgmng540825 күн бұрын
LATAM isn't currently on any alliance. There are much larger shareholders in LATAM than Qatar, so they would have to accept their decisions, notably Delta which supposedly has 20%.
@da48025 күн бұрын
@ exactly what I meant. Delta - as a larger shareholder- influences LATAM's business more than Qatar. While OW and Qatar in particular could have owned a huge market share of South America have they were willing to invest at that time

Though Qatar airways hasn't finalized the 49% acquisition of RwandAir. It already has a 60% stake investment in Rwanda airport worth $1.3 billion. The Bugesera International Airport project in Kigali, expected to be completed by 2028.

You forgot to mention their huge losses on Air Italy.
@jgnclvgmng540825 күн бұрын
Etihad lost more on Alitalia. Italian carriers are difficult to be profitable. Long haul best routes are to the US, and others are not very interesting. And they face huge competition from the 3 main US carriers. Can't even see the point of Lufthansa investing on ITA Airways either...

Qatar have so much money, they have to invest somewhere. No? Since Qatar Airways is going global, investing in other countries is obviously a positive move, in expanding its network and reach.

Virgin aus is interesting re one world partner Qantas
@magical_catgirl25 күн бұрын
Qatar is "annoyed" with Qantas because Qantas made a joint venture deal with Emirates at the same time as Qatar was in the process of joining oneworld. The still to be approved deal with Virgin Australia is more about Qatar getting access to the Australian side of the air service agreement flight limitations between Doha and Australia. They were blocked from their request to increase the limits so are tapping Virgin to double their flights. Virgin doesn't have any wide body aircraft after selling them in 2020 during bankruptcy, so the planned "Virgin Australia" flights to Doha will be using Qatar aircraft and crew. Qatar just got in at a good time with the current owners of Virgin Australia looking to relist the airline and recover their investment.

Qatar Airways are owned by the Qatari Government, which in turn is run by the Emir of Qatar, whatever the airline might like to claim to The US Department of State, to assuage accusations of unfair competition. So its the Emir who has invested in other airlines, using substantial oil revenues with which to do that. Not Qatar Airways. There is no Rule of Law in Qatar, and no unions either, and the airline is notorious for employing Third World labour on minimum wages, and turning their workforce into serfs, by withholding passports, making physical threats, instant sackings etc. The evidence is overwhelming. Maybe the big three US legacy airlines should repeat their 2016 accusations about "unfair subsidies", in the hope that the 47th President will hear them this time.........
@MandoMonge24 күн бұрын
What you say is partially true, but many facts are a bit overblown. How can a crew member operate a flight into a country with their passport being withheld?
@artrandy24 күн бұрын
@@MandoMonge I said "workforce". Do you believe that an airline only employs crew members...😀...? As to whether you approve, disapprove, believe or disbelieve what I've just said, when Google has page after page of proven misdemeanours against this little Fifedom from multitudes of sources, which you are at perfect liberty to check for yourself, doesn't affect me even slightly, if you don't live under the Rule of Law in a fully fledged Democracy. If you don't, then you're likely to be just another apologist for the totalitarian regimes that exist in the ME.........
