I haven't this Air Tanker in operation yet, but when I was based at CFB Comox, on Vancouver Island,back around 1990, the brought the Martin Philippine Mars water bomber for a flyby drop, extremely impressive, soaked us all. What's stopping Boeing from rewinging the 747 to be a twin engine instead 4?
@southjerseysound73404 жыл бұрын
Engine clearance for starters.
@bhall95374 жыл бұрын
@@southjerseysound7340 they tested the 777 engine on the 747, so clearance isn't an issue
@southjerseysound73404 жыл бұрын
@@bhall9537 actually clearance was a issue. For starters the way it had to be mounted created aerodynamic issues and it also affected it's thrust output. Even though GE made it fit for testing purposes clearance was a major problem and it could never operate with any kind of weight and that's just the begining. You'd have to redesign the wings, tail section and more. Then when you factor in the heavier weight of the older design. It'd be cheaper and faster to simply redesign the 777 fuselage to accommodates a second level.
@dunkerfurgill8654 жыл бұрын
I think the company needs more 747 super tankers at least 20! For worldwide. We all know that the 747 are retired. But there are also retired a340. 767.you need big planes for this job because there are more fire s coming.to take care off the fire fast you need more bigger planes!

@2whl4re4 жыл бұрын
Fewer runs required vs smaller aircraft, it has a wider & longer water or retardant drop pattern per load.
@matsv2012 жыл бұрын
Its kind of a odd choice to me. While it is a good aircraft, it also have an operational empty weight of 185 tons (original spec). A smaller aircraft tend to have a better balance becasuse they are not made for that large of a range. A smaller aircraft would also be able to land at a smaller airport. The number of airports that can take a B767 or a A330/A300 is accessible to far more airports. Would also have two planes for the cost of one.. While, yes, to half the capacity. There is a reason why the medium size wide body is dominating as air refulers. The bottle neck really seams to be the turn around and refill time

This plane was converted to a freight that is now owned or operated by National Airlines.
@bobbillings Жыл бұрын
You are right. The company that owned this plane sold this 747-400 global firefighting aircraft (minus the RDS) to National cargo after financial difficulty during covid. National re-converted it to a freighter for delivery service in operation currently. They also sold the retardent delivery system (RDS) to another company, who is currently finalizing it's conversion of a 747-200 with the RDS system that was initially in the 747-400 in the video here. After testing and government approval, we will hopefully see this enter service this year so we will once again have a 747 global fire tanker back in the air.

Still not as cool as the Martin Mars. With a big enough body of water nearby a fire, those magnificent old bombers could deliver way more water way faster because they don't even need to land to refill the tanks. While the 747 is busy getting to a huge airport to refill the Mars could go skim the nearest lake repeatedly and loiter around a fire literally all day.
