My great grandfather was a paratrooper in the 101st during WWII! He was on the Invasion of Sicily(when he was still in the 82nd), D-Day, Market Garden, The Battle of The Bulge, and went to a German labor camp near the end of the war. When the German’s had to surrender their weapons when Germany surrendered, he got a German Luger pistol. Btw, after Sicily he was in the 101st for the rest of the war.

Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. It liberated hundreds of thousands of Dutch civilians, created a protective buffer zone in front of Antwerp and provided the springboard for the British and Canadian advance into Germany, which would have occurred sooner if the American retreat in the Ardennes didn't happen, which prevented all other allied operations that winter.

As a mature young man myself born in 1998 from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia I am extremely grateful for all the selfless men in the past who fought in every war to try to make the world a better place. I would always cherish them in my heart and never forget them. I cannot even begin to imagine the fear and the pain they have experienced absolutely depressing. That is why I will always appreciate my life because I am very lucky that I never had to experience the horrors of war. As human beings we should all follow the three principles of life compassion, empathy and love to have a more perfect union.

The Airborne didn’t jump with BARs, they jumped with .30cals instead, although the 82nd would create a way to drop with the BAR during Korea. Originally, Airborne units needed more portable weapons with a lot of firepower because of their small size, so why drop with a heavy BAR that only has a 20 round capacity when you can drop with a .30 that is smaller overall, easier jump with, and being belt fed as well. The limiting firepower of the BAR and the portability problems of the M1919A4 lead to the paratrooper M1919A6 design, although it was generally a flawed weapon. It made the .30cal even heavier, something no soldier wants. BARs were given to the glider units, and once Airborne soldiers were on the ground, then they would carry BARs. Despite not dropping with them, they were used, especially during the Battle of the Bulge. I don’t remember exactly how it was setup, but I do know that BAR men were usually assigned once they were on the ground.

I’m an airborne unit in the US Air Force, and many of this holds true even today, just updated equipment. A basic rundown of our gear is our rifle, a handgun, a knife, parachute, armor vest, life jacket (if near water), rations, and mission specific equipment in a special pack meant not to interfere with the chute. Most of what we do is the same as back then, being midnight raids in enemy territory, sabotaging ammo caches, etc. There’s a base in the Mojave that is used for paratrooper training with what’s basically air soft guns that hurt more. There’s a bunch of mock bases of different types, mock artillery emplacements, mock airfields, and more. We don’t use drop towers for those either. We literally jump out of planes, attack the mock base that is most of the time a group of instructors or normal infantry men learning how to repel a base raid, complete any objectives like “destroy the airfield” and get out.

My great grandfather was part of the 101st Airborne during WW2. I wish I would've been able to talk to him about what he went through, but he passed away before I was born and the only thing I have to remember him by is a picture of him in his uniform. There is so much respect I have for everyone affected by WW2. Whether someone gave their life for the war or made it home to their family, whether they fought for the Allies or Axis; we must give our utmost respect to all those troops.

My dad was a Toccoa Man and served in WWII with E Company of the independent 517th Regimental Combat Team. He went on to serve 30 years in the army, 26 on jump status, in all the ranks between buck private and bird colonel, including the Warrant ranks. He also served in all five of the airborne divisions and, eventually made almost 2,500 parachute jumps, including one combat jump, his 13th, with the 517th.

My great grandfather was one of those unlucky ones who got snaged in a tree with a German bullet through his left forearm that had shattered his radius . When he cut himself down he sprained his ankle. While he lay in cover waiting for allied forces to push through the german lines and provide medical aid to him, a tow man German patrol pased near by. On of the german soldiers spotted him. My great grandfather leapt with his good leg drawing his combat knife and stabing the first man in the heart as the second man raised his gun, the first fell over on to my great grandfather knocking him to the ground. leting go of the knife impaled in the first German, my great grandfather drew his 1911 and shot at the second solider killing him. The now dead first german lay across him, do to his arm being broken my great grandfather not not move the dead German. So he laid there, when allied forces made it to him the counted four dead German soidiers around him. He went on to help arial reacon identify enemy positions on acount that he was red green color blind. When the war ended he whent home married my great grandmother he would latter work at a VA hospital as an EKG technician. He died in 2005.
