Hi Mel! I’m a long time gardener (40+ years) and have a little garden advice. Get some BT and Spinosad for your pest issues if you want to stay organic. Get sevin dust if you don’t want organic. Then, give your garden a good deep feed with some fish fertilizer and top with some worm tea or worm castings. It looks like your soil is needing some nitrogen, magnesium, and calcium (from the look of the peppers and yellowing leaves). Bone meal will help the spots on the peppers. When you go to amend the beds use azomite, lime, bone meal, blood meal, and bokashi. They will do well for amendments. And if you can use some micorrhizae on the roots of the plants to help them get established and create a good soil web.

Bacillus thuringiensis. It’s a gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium. It kills anything with a soft body like cabbage worms, apple worms, tomato worms, etc. It’s organic and isn’t toxic to humans or animals. Spray it on cabbage leaves, lettuces, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, focusing on the underside of the leaves where the moth lays eggs. It works great! In addition to BT introducing nematodes to the soil will be beneficial too.

Tip for the strawberry's put your rabbit and chicken manure around and mended into the soil make sure that the rabbit and chicken manure is dry. Tip for your brussel sprouts brussel sprouts is a cool weather plant just like the cabbage. They do better in cold weather so when you plant brussel sprouts do you plant them in July or August, so that way they will do much better in the fall when the weather is cooler. Now here's another tip can take and put flour in a screen sieve add dust your plants with flour it's much cheaper than sevin dust. There's another tip and try to remember this one. Most of all your plants needs potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, sulfur, potash, nitrogen, you can go to Walmart or Lowe's or any other store where you can buy the expert garden tomato and vegetable plant food it has all of the nutrients and minerals in that fertilizer that your plants are needing and you can get it in a 8 lb bag and just follow the directions for the application. Now if you want bulb onions then you just put the root end in the ground and keep the onion bulbs above the ground. Onion says a very shallow root system the roots of an onion is just under the surface onions need plenty of nitrogen in order to make the bulbs bigger so rabbit dried rabbit vineyard or dried chicken manure is perfect for your onions. It's like with your broccoli 🥦 it's a nitrogen loving plant also so keeping plenty of dry manure amended in around your broccoli you will be amazed. Do you have a lot of ants that's in and around your garden here's another tip baking soda they eat the baking soda will blow up and die. Because they cannot digest for one and two the carbonate that's in the baking soda makes the bugs swell up.

@@stephaniedeegan853 very thing that I know about gardening I've learned from the old times like my grandparents and people like them. They didn't have the commercial fertilizers or the pesticides that we have today. They just used what they had like manure and potash in Epsom salt for the magnesium. They used flour and baking soda for their pesticide. And they know what plans needed to get the bast from their vegetables that they were growing because they depended on that for all of their home canning. I'm over 60 years old and I've been gardening since I've been 6 years old. So I don't mind sharing my knowledge about gardening to help someone else.

@@AdamofCA. People like me and all the old timers from days gone by knew or knows plant preference when it comes to fertilizing the plants. It only the ones whom claims to know all about gardening and fertilizers that does not understand why they don't have healthy plants that does not have healthy plants that produces an abundance. And when someone like me comes along and give the solution for more healthier plant people like you that says oh I didn't know that playing plants has a fertilizer preference that's unknown to me. So I say to those knows of people is your garden it's your plants do with it what you will and keep wondering why you don't have a healthy plants in your garden. Plants are like people they need the right types and a good balance of nutrients in order to stay healthy. So when people eat unhealthy foods that's loaded with all kinds of chemical preservatives and they continue to do so over the years their health declines. When you supply not enough of nutrients such as the nitrogen that the plant needs the potassium that the plant needs the calcium that the plant needs and then the minerals like magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, then each year you end up with unhealthy plants and you're wondering why you're not getting the produce that you should be getting. An unhealthy plant is an unhappy plant as to where a healthy plant is a happy plant. But I'm sure that that is unknown to you also. Happy gardening

One little clove of garlic into a liquidizer, fill with water and let it run. Pour it into a bottle and let it settle overnight. Put the clear liquid into a spray spritz bottle and mist the plants, especially the undersides of the leaves. Settled the bug problem I had pretty quickly - bugs hightail it out of there at a speed.

Mel. Go ahead and pull your Brussels, broccoli, kale, any brassica plants. Right now in arkansas they will be eaten alive and a never-ending pest battle. Replant them in August. They can handle the cold not the heat. Pull your lettuce as well it will continue to bolt, to hot. Replant mid to late August, you should get some fresh before frost (usually around halloween-ish) you can also plant some yellow squash and zucchini now and get some before frost (may battle the squash bug fight and have to stay on top of watering) right now the best plants to concentrate on are tomatoes, peppers, okra, pink eye purple hull peas, green beans etc. But fair warning the heat can do a number on plants. May want to consider some shade cloth. Just string up in places for intense time of day block. Doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. Around early to mid August you can throw in lettuce, radish, etc. You still have time, I garden almost year round. Don't forget you can still plant carrots in August also but tough to get them rolling. They last in super cold weather, cabbages, broccoli, Brussels, kale. I've managed to grow them all winter with row covers. I'm not to far away, so I know it can be done with a little luck and persistence 😂 garden early morning, late evening. Girl it is waaaaayyyy to hot right now!

You can use Diatomaceous earth on the plants directly. It wont hurt them. It works when its dry, so you need to reapply after rains when its dried out again. If you're drip irrigating the garden, then direct dusting the plants will work better. And applying it on dry areas of the beds. BT is another organic pest control you can use also. Ive also used red pepper sprinkled on.

Hi Mel: I thought about marigolds in the cinderblock spaces and had heard a long time ago that they would help keep bugs out of the garden. Now after reading up on that it was a wives tale but it did make the garden look good. Anything growing in the summer around here has to deal with hoppers and they have cleaned out my rhubarb leaves but the plants come back every year and we get lots of good rhubarb for a rhubarb bar that she makes, sure is good and I am not a big rhubarb person. In any case it may not help but it might make the garden have some color to it as well.

I use a three-pronged approach to control the bad bugs/pests in my garden. #1 Beneficial insects - I purchase lacewing eggs and assassin bug eggs from a reputable source like Arbico Organics in Tucson. Assassin bugs pretty much eat most bad bugs including squash bugs, cucumber beetles, etc. Lacewing eat aphid, white fly, leaf hoppers, spider mites and more. After 2 growing seasons of putting lacewing and assassin bug eggs in my garden, I now have a population that reproduces itself. It's HOT and dry here in July-Aug. The lacewings hibernate during that time but the assassin bugs are perfectly fine in the hot weather. I see egg sacs in several places even when it's 110 degrees. Both survive the mild winters where I live. I know a lot of people recommend releasing ladybugs but I've have had zero success with doing that and establishing them permanently in the garden. They rarely stick around long. Which brings me to another thing that I do for the beneficial insects. I dedicate a large planter where I grow a pollinator mix that feeds the lacewing and assassin bugs when there isn't another food source for them. I even started seeing praying mantis in the garden after I started growing this pollinator mix. #2 OMRI approved pesticides - My go-to pesticides are Azera and BT. They are pricey but a little goes a long way. BT takes care of the hornworms and other bad caterpillar/worms. Azera takes care of pretty much everything else. I use these sparingly and typically only to knock down a problem before the lacewing eggs hatch in early spring or to mitigate any hornworm issues on tomatoes. I've tried the soap sprays and the oil-based sprays (which fry the leaves in our intense sun) and they didn't work well for me. It's important to note that I use WAY less of the organic pesticides since a good population of the beneficial insects has been established. #3 Tulle - I use a fine mesh tulle to cover the tender vegetable plants in the spring. It has to be a FINE mesh. This helps prevent the moths from laying the eggs and keeps the grasshoppers off of them. I also cut the tulle into squares and wrap it around the tomato clusters after the fruit sets but before it begins to ripen. This deters the birds from pecking holes in the tomatoes. The tulle that I buy is on Amazon - much cheaper than the "garden netting". Just search for "Craft and Party 54'' Tulle (Bolt 40 Yard) Fabric, Brown". Even after doing all of this, I will still have an occasional problem with a pest. It's just part of growing your own food. So, don't get discouraged. YOU ARE DOING GREAT! Hope this helps!

Summer fruits (watermelon, cantaloupe, squashes, etc) love the heat. Try planting those next spring. Organic pest control with neem oil is best method, imo. I'm ADHD and time blocking has made a huge difference. If I have big projects on my plate but maintenance still needs to be done I will set a block of time say ten minutes every day that I will spend on maintenance in the garden or coops. Don't go over whatever time you set. Just stop and get back to your higher priority. So when you need to leave for a few days it won't be as far behind and get to overwhelm.

It’s a freefall we’re gonna eat it because nobody cares that’s what’s going on. I’m so glad yours are my eggplants so I had to reply again, but trust me, do not plant your strawberries that close They need either be in her raised bed somewhere else other plants because of the bugs and mold if you plant marigolds around these plants, marigold will chase off a lot of the bugs cause they don’t like the smell trust me. Shad cloth can help when you have planted cool weather crops later than is maybe optimal. Meme spray is a good organic spray you can get from Home Depot for leafy veggies when you use before any infestations get started. Cucumbers like a lot of water and utilize a lot of nitrogen same with your strawberries. Gardens really do much better with daily attention. I swear just going out in the evening and being present fiddling around before bed can make a difference. There have been studies done showing that plants really respond to positive vibes from humans. Crazy but true. I know with all thats on your plate it can be hard to find time so no shame for that but it’s interesting info. I actually have noticed how much healthier my plants do when I make the time.😊❤

Broccoli and Brussel sprouts are a colder weather plant. I've never been able to grow them down here in the south.

you have to hand pick and daily inspect your plants if you don't use chemicals in the garden in the humid and hot areas of the south. Row covers will help with keeping some pests out I am making hoop covers with insect netting for brassicas with all the grasshopper/beetle damage. I have a huge problem with all the butterfly/moth types in my area of Texas. I won't use chemicals and have all the same problems. Good luck Mel

If you can find it, alpacca droppings are a great ammendment and are a cold "poo" so you dont have too let them set before using. You can collect and apply same day.

Hi Mel. Chipotle peppers are just jalapeños that have been left on the vine till they are red. So you can make some awesome Chipotle sauce with those. Don't quote me on this but I don't believe that is how you get brussle sprouts. They grow on the stem and they are a cool weather crop. So they hate the heat. They will not grow, it's just been to damn hot this year. Try in the fall or early spring when it's cooler and less humid

Gary there is a short posted on youtube where a guy bought a 2' black PVC Culvert, ran it up to the kids treehouse, cut the top off the last 4', and covered those cut edges with split pool noodles held on with zip ties. Smooth interior makes it just like a slide but cheaper! Thinking about the kiddos! ❤❤

I see where someone has already advised 7 dust. I am in late 60's and it's what we used on our garden when I was child. I still use it. Using mulch will help with the weeds. And it's not to late in year to replant lettuce, cucumbers, and cold weather crops. Broccoli and colards will grow until hard freeze. And your sprouts may perk up once it cools in a few months. Sprouts take longer to grow.

Others have mentioned it below, but Neem oil is an organic pesticide (made from a tree) that may help with some of the bugs. Unfortunately, it will kill certain beneficial insects as well (lady bugs are not immune) but based on the insect damage you showed, the predator insects seem in short supply. Neem is harmless to pets and people, and you can actually spray and harvest on the same day. All that said, the heat that we in North Texas have had and that I assume you are experiencing for the past three weeks is really hard on gardens. The good news for me - I planted potatoes at the very beginning of March, and we had so much rain that was able to harvest them in early June, and replanted with some peppers to see if I can get some of those from the same small raised bed in the late summer/early fall.

I have t yet read all the comments, but this is similar to the one about garlic. In a blender put two whole bulbs of garlic ( not just two cloves) and two of the hottest peppers you grow. Add enough water to blend these four items thoroughly. Strain out the solids and add the remaining liquid to a gallon jug. Finish filling the gallon jug with water. Use two ounces of this concenttrate to a gallon of water in a pump up sprayer. Spray both top and undersides of leaves. Do this early morning or late afternoon. This does not kill but deters bugs. The leaf eaters don't like the smell or taste of the garlic or pepper. The preditors such as lady ugs do not eat leaves anyway, so it doesnt bother them.. i have t gardened since ive gotten older but this worked well for me when i did garden Good luck! .

Hi Mel, that cooling collar sounds ’cool’. I have used damp cloths for that, dipping them in water from time to time as needed. I only stay ou for about an hour at a time, hide in the house or shed for cool. The insulated shed with fans helps me a lot. The house is air conditioned and is so good. Just wish we had a swimming pool at this place. We had a small but deep pool at one of our previous homes and it was a cool dream in summer. I wonder how just trimming off the strawberries this year and let the plants grow more, you may be blessed with healthier fruit next year.

hi. this is just me but what i would do is to remove every bug infested plants and leave the "good" ones. then i would spray the whole garden whit something that repels bugs or kills them, then i would let the garden rest for like 1 or 2 days to kill off the remaining bug. then i would plant the garden whit diffrent things again because we are kinda in the middle off the summer so it can grow back so you can harvest things in the fall. and when the fall comes then i would remove plants that cant handle fall and let it rest. basically i would plant fall garden, remove the fall garden in the winter, let it rest, plant spring garden, remove spring garden in the summer, plant summer garden, remove summer garden in the fall, plant fall garden and repeat.

Brussel sprouts are a fall winter crop, they are best planted late summer and left till after a freeze. The bugs will be better then and they will grow better. As for the size of your peppers and some of the other crops look like a lack of fertilizer. The DE is good but it looses its effectiveness once it gets wet even from dew and has to be reapplied. One thing to do to keep the bug damage to a minimum is keep them healthy with fertilizers and a good water schedule. Check out Neem oil and a few other organic things. The problem with organic is you can't use them to knock down a problem you have to stay ahead of them for them to be effective. There is a catalog of nothing but organic pest control I can't remember the name but you should be able to find it by searching for organic pest control.

You need an umbrella stand to hold it above where you work. I have one that I can stick into pipe in ground for shade. I move it as I go. You can get one that can move that is like a beach one with an end that sticks in the sand, dirt. Or get a small tent like one that you can move as you work.

Hi, Mel! ❤ I have also trouble this year with bugs. At some point some cabbage moths have been visiting my greenhouse and left a punch of "babies" behind that I didn't know of😅. Well, yesterday i found my tomatoes and their leaves are holy like your other plants and in the backside of leaves i found caterpillar-like creatures munching their breath away. I cut all the most infected/eaten stuff away because the plants are suffering anyway and nutrients don't transfer in leaves if they are so scarred and now I'm also deciding/searching my next moves. But I have suggestion for strawberries. You need to keep frequently eyes on vines and snap them off. Strawberry plants are constantly producing "doughter plants" on these and so they give most of their strength and energy to population. If you can keep your plants vines under control they keep giving their energy mostly for producing the fruits so there's gonna be more of them and bigger also. I can't be sure, I might be wrong, but from video it looks a bit like they're filled in and fighting for space also. Good luck!❤
