With the recent negative temperatures we bundle up and head outside to capture fun winter shots (and evade cabin fever). Next we head to Anchorage to pick up some much needed equipment for our cabin.

Stunning quality as always, just beautiful, I love where you live. Had a lot of fun over the years on snow machines.. until the one night i didn't. So now here i lay each and every day. I'm sure you two will have loads fun, good for you and I bet you'll love it. In my opinion you'll love the Skidoo, best machine out there. I owned several different brands over the years, skidoos were the most reliable.

I have lemon grass but don't know what parts I should use to dry them. I have successfully dried a lot of herbs with my oven set at 170 F for about an hour or so but I know I am probably cooking them instead of dehydrating them. How do you dry yours? Thanks
@SimpleLivingAlaska
@SimpleLivingAlaska 5 жыл бұрын
mary w we only air dry our herbs, you can use an oven (I haven't tried that method) or a dehydrator. You can use both the thicker stalk and the tips or leaves. We froze the stalks last year and used for recipes, I air dried the leaves for tea ☺

Will a wide track keep it on top of the snow better? Thanks for commenting.
@KP11520
@KP11520 5 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleLivingAlaska I'd bet you've used snowshoes. Same principle. More surface area, more resistance to crushing what's underneath and sinking. The wide tracks stay upright easier when you keep falling over sideways as well. Which happens more with a passenger. However, it doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy the hell out of what you got! They were the norm for decades.

Uh before widetracks/longtracks that's all we had....for deep snow. The trick was to have a small machine like an Elan ss to break the trail for the larger snow machines....no one groomed trails to my place 120 miles in the middle of nowhere...And yes even the long tracks and wide tracks get bogged down...and are twice as heavy to lift out....Its a definite learning curve to ride snowmachines for the first time...

Dont know if you have access to hardwoods up where you are at, but if you do, to last all night put the whole log ( of course i mean sectioned for the size to fit in your stove) and 2 split peices on each corner of the log and unless you have a bad draft in your chimney that should burn 7 hours , was a trick my grandfather taught me , he live up in yellowknife nw and said it always worked, if you 2 sleep longer i would say whoever goes pees in the middle of the night needs to chunk a piece in then on the way back to bed , peace be with you both , thank you for shareing this experience

Susanne Galligan, Yes and no, it freezes EVERYTHING outside instantly and makes our day to day routine a little tricky but when your outside if you have warm clothes on it feels better than I would have thought. We invested in warmer boots and wool socks, just have to keep moving or our hands can get cold. This may be TMI but nose hairs and eyelashes freeze, kinda weird.
@susannegalligan8600
@susannegalligan8600 5 жыл бұрын
Not TMI, interesting. You don’t think about things like that when you’re not in it. Things that would really bother me (I think) are doing chores like laundry which now take 5 minutes of hands on time putting in machine, transferring, taking out, versus hours of hands on time off grid. Not that I’m going to start living off grid soon. But in my imaginings!

Simple Living Alaska it really is! My mum went on the Vancouver to Alaska cruise years ago. She still raves about it. My dad lived in the Yukon in the 1950s,not long after immigrating from Germany. Alaska and Yukon are on my list of places to see one day. I would like to take a bit of my dads ashes to the Yukon. Maybe one day. Honestly there are so many beautiful places everywhere on this earth. Let’s pray they remain that way. I live in Ontario Canada and we have beautiful land here.
