Hey Peeps,
a while ago I promised I would make a tutorial on how to make your own custom missiles in SimplePlanes. At last, it is here. :)
I read every comment, so if you have any struggles or need some help; please post a comment and I’ll get back to you!

Thank you. I always thought the missile had to have the fins exposed but I wasn't taking off the mass and drag so that's why they were always zig zaging. I can't wait to try to make an aim-9x

This game needs to be mixed with simplerockets so we could have things like radar targeting, IR targeting, guns ,sonar, ejection seats,modular custom missiles maker and saver to be used as a single custom missile weapon.

You can use nose cone as a missile tip but you have to connect it manually because it doesn't have a forward attach point. And you also have to connect the first fuselage manually because it will not connect the bacwards of the nose cone where occupied by the disconnector

Yes, you can indeed use a nose cone. But I dicourage it as it makes the whole proces more annoying without any real benefit.

I have a huge question for you that I have been having for 11 months now, how do you make a missile that can be shot unguided without the need for a lock? Basically just like shooting a rocket but instead of a rocket its a Cleaver that doesn’t need a Lock. If you can figure this out you are officially the greatest person on our planet!

I'm confused by your question? Do you mean a missile that can be fired, and then lock on afterwards? You can do this with guardian missiles by activating them first via a actiongroup on a pilon and then locking onto a target. Of you are looking for a unguided missile, you can just use a normal rocket. You can change the name of this rocket just like the missiles. You can also use the custom missile exterior tutorial part of this video to make a custom looking rocket.

Notice that it is just an inferno that can be shot wherever you want, without the need to be locked onto something to fire.

It's simple just give the missile an activation group same as the pylon that way the missile will be launched like a rocket

Do you know all the code to use in overload?, like in the missile if you to missile part you can add codes like "lockTime" which is going to change how long the lock time of a missile will be.

First of all, amazing video, then I do have one question, I’m trying to make something similar to an IR air to air missile and since there isn’t this mechanic in game (at least currently on the mobile version) I’m trying to use an Inferno as an air to air missile (since it somewhat looks similar to an R-60 or R-73), and idk why but the “function” code that, as far as I understand, should tell the missile what kind of target to go after, isn’t really working

The Interceptor missile is basically functionally the same, but already an AAM. You can make the Inferno and the Interceptor function identically by just changing their attributes to the same values.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

you can also add a cleaver, or a boom 50 and resize it down to fit inside the missile, and disable the mass and drag so when, the missile hits the target, it explodes with more firepower xd

True. However, this can also be done by increasing the explosionScale of your missile. This might prove easier. You should do whay you prefer tho! :)

I don't know to be honest. I think it might be in m/s, but I haven't been able to confirm that myself.

Its actually m/s which means 400+ m/s is 700+ mph

If you have the missile selected and open the part settings (click the sprocket on the right), there should be an option to add a camera to the missile.

in my experience, the missile still did weird loops, all physical properties of the custom missile was disabled and it was connected to the detacher as shown

When I finished making the shell of the missile, I started testing it, firing a slow or a target directly in front was completely fine, however, shooting a target that's not in front of the aircraft or flying too fast, then the missile turned extremely sharp and destroyed its shell, and then chased the target on its own, however turning all parts of the shell to not collide with the missile causing the missile to keep spinning around after launch, I have no idea how to fix that, so I just limited the lock angle, lower the turning speed and turned collision on again. Btw, very good and detailed tutorial.

Sorry for the very late reply. Custom missiles can be a bit tricky, even if you follow all the steps in this tutorial. Sometimes it helps to decrease the scale of the actual missile and moving as far forwards as possible in the shell. It will look a bit wierder when you fire the missile, but this can sometimes solve issues with the missile spinning after launch.

@@WalvisYT Thanks man, but I actually found a way to solve that, I made the missile length as long as the shell. It was an idea at first but it ended up working way too well, also I play simpleplanes on ver 1.11, the version that introduced cockpit interior parts and I play on a low-end laptop so something being broken isn’t too surprising.

Hey, I was wondering how do you setup flaps as you did on this airplane? I know that they need to be controlled by Vtol, but how do you make their deafult position the lowest one. To me, they always start in the middle and i can both extend them downwards and upwards

@@zmyslowykalosz No worries. It is possible to use speed as an input; 'TAS>a-speed'. TAS (True Airspeed) can be replaced by IAS (Indicated Airspeed) or GS (Ground speed).

@@WalvisYT Thank you very much! I also found out in my testing that the speed in all those options is measured in m/s so 3.6km/h. My last (I know, i'm sorry) question is the following. Is there and option for engine to start working at certain speed but also be dependent on throttle input? Again, thank you so much, you helped me a lot! Keep up the good work fella

ALT is the key I've had it bound to for years, but I don't know if that is default. It should be under the keybinds section in the settings.

so i was making a custom missile and ready to test launch, but after i launch the custom missile, i can't touch anything, it's like not responding, i can't control anything or using any ingame button, the only way to restart is using my phone back button and then restart, I've been trying to low all graphics but it didn't work. can anyone know how to fix?

I made a ICBM, (a oversized inferno) it has explosion scale of 100 and the scale from inferno is 2.25x larger and that is all I changed about it. It has poor accuracy and is fired vertically. Any ideas how to fix that?( I am planning to build around the inferno, I made inferno bigger so it has bigger exhaust) I set MHAAR and MVAAR to 1E+31 and it is still inaccurate

@@WalvisYT it made it very accurate but the exhaust to missile ratio is tiny XD a thin line of exhaust coming out of the ICBM and it lost the arch that is kinda needed

I've come across a bug in mobile where if i try to alter my missile speed the missile will stay stuck in the air after it's launched do you have any way of solving that?

I have run into an issue where my missile decides to pop out of the exterior without disconnecting like it just pops out when I make turns and stuff btw slow plane so not a physics glitch, the whole missile too not just a little

It be like that. Even the devs don't know how this can be adressed. You can try scaling the missile down to a smaller size.

@@michaelboodram8470 if what you reffering is that the missile is like wobbly on the detacher, then you can set the massScale value to 0.1. I did it with mine and the missile works as intended, aswell not act like its boutta fall off.

if I disable the detacher, my missile won't be detached. I have to keep it turned on and I have to press both the missile launch button and the detacher activation group button. What did I do wrong??

nvm, I fixed it. The custom bit had to be connected to the detacher; not the missile

How can I make automatic deploying wings on a missile? They have to work even when I have multiple missiles. I'm kinda struggling to find out the right xml code.

You could try to do this by checking which missile launches when, and using a function to determine how much ammo (how many missiles) are left. So that when the number of remaining missiles goes down, this opens the wings on the missile you just launched. My AF-55 has a similair code for rotating the bombay carousel, incase you need inspiration.

I kinda need something like this, cause i want to create a custom homing torpedo or missile that tracks the target after its being fired. i know i could just use a normal missile for homing, but they have to work at *ANY* depth underwater.

The cleaver automatically deploys its wings after being fired. Other missiles don't have such a function.

While this is really useful you really only the XML mod. The only time I've ever used the fine tuner was to scale a whole build, that's the only real use for it. everything else can be done VIA XML and the game in general. Also why are you mirroring the whole plane when you can just mirror the object itself?

They look good but they still Arent realistic, all the missiles have infinite fuel. Is there a way to make one that has limited fuel but still track the enemy

From my own experimenting it seems that missiles in SP can only change their heading while the engine is ignited.

This means you are making a typing error; check your spelling and your capital letters. Also be sure that the value / input you assign to a property is actually possible. (Also click the checkmark when making changes in overload)
