You could try to get the matrix into a form where only 1 row starts with a non-zero number. Then, you calculate the dertiminant of this new matrix, which is just a constant times the determinant of the 3x3 matrix you get, which is pretty easy to calculate.

Well this method is only useful with matrices which were intentionally made to be easily solvable, I mean good luck using this method in this 4x4 (54, 46, -85, 156), (-23, -2, -121, -69), (-61, 203, 40, -183), (16, 12, 1, 48), the answer is 0 btw.

Using the expansion of cofactor may reduce the struggle I guess, since we will have 3 * 3 nest matrices to find its determinant. But for 5 * 5 or above, I think this "upper and lower triangle" option is more likely to be applied.

Is there a trick to calculating this one in upper triangle form? I got -114 as my determinant. 1,2,3,4 -1,4,6,4 1,2,1,1 1,-1,1,-1 I'm not sure if I did this step right. I multiplied the third row by -5/2 and added it to the fourth row. 1,2,3,4 0,6,9,8 0,0,2,3 0,0,5,-2 This is what I got 1,2,3,4 0,6,9,8 0,0,2,3 0,0,0,-19/2 And finally 1*6*2*(-19/2)= -114 I easily got the right answer from getting zeroes on 3 of the 4 entries in the first column. It was 57.

Why was R_2 X R_3 performed instead of R_4 X R_2 ? Usually you use partial pivoting and use the largest absolute value for swaps to avoid subsequent round off errors. Also R_3 has 0,3,1,0 when you swap and already contains a pivot at 1, so it means one less flop..

at 6:56 to make the 6 in the last row 0, why cant you perform this operation (-3R1 + R4). When I did this i ended up with the final answer as 36.
@Bunny99s
@Bunny99s 7 жыл бұрын
Uhm when you do R4 = R4 - 3R1 your new R4 would have a "-3" in the first column since the first row has a 1 in the first column. Once all rows have a 0 in the first column except the first row you can't use R1 for anything as every operation would change the 0 in the first column to something non-zero.

If we swap two lines, the sign of the determinant flips aswell. Is this only for triangular form? Or does it have a specific rule?
@Bunny99s
@Bunny99s 7 жыл бұрын
This is a general rule for the determinant. Just think about a 2x2 matrix a b c d The determinant is (a * d) - (c * b) If you swap the lines you basically swap the terms so it becomes (c*b) - (a*d) which is the same as -((a * d) - (c * b)) The same logic applies to larger matrices but it's not that obvious in a 3x3 or 4x4 matrix. For a 3x3 matrix we usually just use the rule of sarrus: m00 m01 m02 m10 m11 m12 m20 m21 m22 det = +m00*m11*m22 + m01*m12*m20 + m02*m10*m21 - m20*m11*m02 - m21*m12*m00 - m22*m10*m01 m00 m01 m02 m20 m21 m22 // swapped m10 m11 m12 // swapped det = +m00*m21*m12 + m01*m22*m10 + m02*m20*m11 - m10*m21*m02 - m11*m22*m00 - m12*m20*m01 If you look carefully you will notice that the positive terms of our second matrix where we swapped two lines are actually the negative terms of the first matrix. If we re-arrange the terms of the second matrix to match the terms of the first we get det = -m00*m11*m22 - m01*m12*m20 - m02*m10*m21 + m20*m11*m02 + m21*m12*m00 + m22*m10*m01 As you can see all signs have flipped. So extracting a minus sign we get det = -(m00*m11*m22 + m01*m12*m20 + m02*m10*m21 - m20*m11*m02 - m21*m12*m00 - m22*m10*m01)

This technique is not reliable and does not always work. Example try and do it with this 4x4. 3,2,-1,0 0,2,0,1 1,-1,3,3 2,0,1,0 answer is -25 Its better to use the long way just to be sure. Especially during an exam.

I know your comment is pretty old by now, and this reply is pretty late... But I calculated the determinant of the 4x4 matrix you gave with this method, and in fact I got the correct answer of -25. May be you made a simple mistake in your arithmetic... I'm not an expert, but I think this method is much faster, and much much MUCH more reliable than the other longer method of calculating smaller determinants. Try it again.

Hi Tin, Here is my solution. If you have any questions, please let me know, and I will try to help. Please note that there is not just set set of steps that work, there are many sets of steps that you could take to reduce the matrix to a triangular form, which should give you the same answer. This is just the path that I took, trying to be as efficient as I can. Hope it helps. Eran.

@Bunny99s
@Bunny99s 7 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't matter which rows you swap or how often you swap as long as you always flip the sign when you swap two rows. It's highly recommended to only do one step at a time. So if you want to do two different swaps it's better to perform them one after another.
