Merry Christmas Mike. You've done a great job revisiting this classic project. Furthermore, the tips and teachings contained in each video are very important to educate and encourage the new generation to venture into these types of projects. Congratulations from Brazilian preservationists.

Thanks so much for watching. I wondered if anyone would as it hit on Christmas eve! Did you notice if it had the auto dub in Portuguese?
@mauriciosinigaglia47614 күн бұрын
Greetings. The automatic audios are working well. I prefer the original. But this automatic audios good for those who don't understand the original. Note: your voice in Portuguese is weird.k

Thanks Mike. Lots of top tips. I was surprised at how effective a single XTAL is.

What we don't see yet is the actual circuit loading or the skirts, but very impressive indeed! Hey this circuit was king for 20 years before Collins mechanical filters in the 50s and ceramics and CB filters came along.
@Steve-GM0HUUКүн бұрын
@MIKROWAVE1 I will maybe try it out. I recently built a x4 XTAL 400Hz/4MHz ladder filter for a superhet and I don't think the performance was much better than this. So, maybe see if I can use this as a simpler circuit with less XTALs??

Hello Mike, Merry Christmas. I see a lot of interesting projects coming our way. The part with the crystal filter here was very informative. I look forward to it continuing :-) 73 de Bernd

I would like to repeat that with a Nano VNA, but I thought doing it with crude equipment might be better.

One tidbit about the single crystal filter that I did not cover. They actually can ring on signals, the Q is so high, which can be annoying. But they can also dig out a CW signal buried in noise like a magic DSP for this same reason.

1.8423khz crystals are close to the ideal IF, (1.750) actually, and if you spread out the oscillator just a bit you can even pull in CHU on 3.33mhz. Spread the oscillator range a bit more and you can also tune in CHU on 7.85. Using a diode as a varactor with several pots to adjust the voltage and you can pad the range of the oscillator on different bands so the tuning will cover EXACTLY 500khz on 80 and 300khz on 40, and two more switches will put CHU on the high or low end. Add a cam to the preselector cap shaft so it controls a micro switch to select the diode voltage and you can switch the oscillator range by just turning that knob.

That common crystal frequency is a great suggestion Ken. Its funny I was thinking similarly on how to do the switching gracefully on the bandspread, but didn't get that far!
@W1RMD7 күн бұрын
This looks amazing! BTW the smaller (newer) style crapstal CANNOT be sanded down! I had an ole' timer tell me years ago that he used to sand down his (ft-43) crystals to raise his frequency. SO..........(this was 1993 mind you, I was still a Johny Novice) Well, desoldering the outer case of my crystal, I was able to get access to the nice little disc inside. It did NOT survive 150 grit sand paper very well! 73 and Merry and Happy and all that stuff!
@MIKROWAVE16 күн бұрын
You are thinking correctly about the sand paper. I have been using the blue superfine automotive paper with water to grind crystals for years. Maybe a video...
@W1RMD4 күн бұрын
@@MIKROWAVE1 Sounds great! I though you could only (reasonably) sand FT-43 crystals. I wonder how these newer ceramic style crystals compare to quartz crystals of the old days.

Hi, 71 YO trainee electronic tech here! I watch a lot of YT videos about building and designing "stuff", and in a vid about building a power supply, the presenter, (Paul Carson I think) said about ensuring that the transformers, chokes and inductors are "out of phase" with their coils out of line to stop inductive pick up and hum. I note that the mains transformer and the choke are close together and the coils appear to be in line, will this interfere with the performance or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick? Please help by clearing up this confusing issue for me. Thank you Jim M7BXT

You youngsters scare me! Ha. I have no idea about the reactor coupling argument. It sounds subtle, since it is not discussed widely in the literature. I have a few questions. What about the steel chassis vs AL? The winding types? The current and voltages to make the fields? Now i'm questioning my life choices. It's the Gluhwein Talking.
