This is the "Introduction"... I think it explains why I decided to try to make my own plywood and the initial mistakes I made (i.e. 2-ply). Then there are the videos "Plywood Clamping Jig - Making Plywood" Parts 1,2 & 3. Also, two videos "Segmented Clock Wheel" Parts 1 & 2 making solid wood segmented wheels. And one video "Comparison Of Completed Clock Wheels - Plywood & Segmented Wood" which shows how they turned out. There are 20 clock related videos on my channel. Thanks for watching.

Excellent craftsmanship. A beautiful clock. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes

The shafts (axils) are piano wire. The main shaft rides inside two holes drilled in the wood frame, which serve as the bearings (no bushings). Some of the other wheels (gears) have brass tube bushings (brass tubing from K&S Engineering - hobby supplies). The Center Wheel is attached to the main shaft with a setscrew, which engages a flat machined into the main shaft. Google “wood gear clocks” and visit Clayton Boyer’s site. Lots of information at the bottom of the page.

Good project. Thank you. You make me understand how the clock works.

I just discovered your channel. I've always loved old-fashioned mechanical movements, they have a certain beauty about them. Subscribed, I hope to learn from your videos.

Inspiring work. can you explain what do you use as a bearing? what exactly is the rod, how do you connect it to the wood? and prevents the wheel from falling when its hanged? thanks a lot.

Clayton Boyer is the clock designer and he has the plans on his website. He has a lot of different designs. Google search for "Wood Gear Clock" or "Clayton Boyer".

Ronald Walters do you sell wooden clocks? I am looking for a wooden flying pendulum clock but do not have the tools nor experience to create one from wood. Let me know. Jesse
@RonaldWalters20105 жыл бұрын
I do not sell them, you need to make one yourself. A lot of time and effort goes into making a GOOD wood gear clock and you probably would not want to pay the asking price. Experience is gained by actually making one of these projects... you have to start somewhere.

How accurate does this clock tell the time? Have you measured how many seconds it gains or loses a day?

i think the lighter gears provided much more contrast and depth than the darker. it kinda looks cluttered and flat now. Hides the great craftsmanship too.

Have you considered making a dedicated tool to cut gear tooth profiles? Something like a very small broach or file that could mount in place of the blade in a jig saw?
@RonaldWalters20106 жыл бұрын
No. I cut too many different profiles. Once you cut a few on the scroll saw it really does become quite easy. I have cut these on some pretty cheap saws, although the better the saw the easier it becomes.

How long do these projects of your last? EG, how long do the parts last before needing to replaced due to wear?
@RonaldWalters20109 жыл бұрын
TakeBackTheWorld Weather changes can certainly cause a variation in the way a wood gear clock runs. A clock made of Baltic birch plywood will be the most stable. If raw wood is used for the various components a bit more movement can be expected. These really do not run "fast enough" to wear anything out. If it is inside a temperature controlled home (seasonal heating and air conditioning) it should run just fine after the usual initial fine-tuning of the gears. My best guess is a wood gear clock properly and carefully made should outlive you. I have not (yet) found it necessary to replace anything.

Awesome work! Is there any book (or online resource) you´d recommend to explain how to make the calculations and the logic behind the gears in your mechanisms? All I´ve found is way too technical and I end up lost in all terminology

If you just want to build something I would suggest googling Clayton Boyer Wood Gear Clocks. His "Simplicity" is the easiest to make. If you want to play around with making a few gears you can use one of the free online gear template generators like the one at woodgears.ca (lower left corner) or he has one for sale. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Please Subscribe !

@RonaldWalters20108 жыл бұрын
+Gavin Riggs You can build one of these. Plans available at www.lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/Claytonsite1.htm and this is "Simplicity'. Probably the easiest clock he has and the plans are very good. Thanks for watching! Please subscribe.
