Andrew, thanks for this tutorial. It solved a problem that probably kept me from crashing my wing on a maiden. I was trying to do the mixes in my transmitter while I was getting weird reactions from Inav when testing. I was pulling my hair out trying to figuring out why it was doing it! Now I know why! Inav was trying to work around the mixes in the radio that was screwing up the calculus in its controls. I cleared every mix I made (several hours worth) from my transmitter and now everything seems normal. I did all the reversing and changes in the mixer and outputs in Inav like you said -its all good now. Inav seems happy with it. Although at 17:55 you indicated that we could go into the transmitter and fix it-I still went into Inav outputs and did the reversing with (-) and servos until I got the right directions.

I really love this series - IMHO it couldn't be more perfectly targeted. Before the Seriously Dodo flight controller was discontinued, I purchased a few of them directly from RMRC. The Dodo has since been dropped by INAV, presumably because of its small FLASH size. But the extra features that require the extra FLASH aren't relevant to my simple requirements. So I'm trying to find an old version of INAV I can use with the Dodo. Your tutorial is extremely helpful in making this effort work. Perhaps I should just buy a new FC, but it galls me not to get use out of the perfectly good ones I already have. ;)

Andrew,,,I hope you don’t tire of all my questions. But another detail (for understanding iNAV). I now fully understand your choice of angle and manual flight modes on a three position switch (leaving acro to be accessed when the switch is in off position). The question is for the Navigation modes. You like RTH on a two position switch. When this RTH switch is selected (on),,,does this mode override the flight mode selected by the three position switch (and fly in a default flight mode per iNAV’s inherent choice)? {and I guess this same sort of result happens regardless of which Navigation mode is selected per set up switch}. Thank you.
@AndrewNewtonАй бұрын
No problem, you ask good questions Marty. RTH overrides all other modes because that's the panic mode for lost video or RC link, then Manual overrides all but RTH. All the Nav modes use Angle automatically.

Great info, as usual. Wondering if the admonition against using the radio model for rates and expo is a general best practice for fixed wing or specific only to INAV? I set my 1st plane up with dual rates and expo on the model inputs (as I had done on my quads). It's a DSMX AS3X Rx, and I use a Radiomaster TX16S with a 4 in 1 internal module for DSMX. I see guys using Spectrum radios and "Forward Pgming" to set rates, etc., but I don't know if that is changing params in the radio model, the TX or the Rx? And I see the T16S has some forward pgming LUA's but have never tried to use. Appreciate any advice. Thx, and hope you are having better weather than we are in Seattle!

Greetings. The weather is beautiful here in southern Australia at the moment. I was only referring to INAV and flight control boards. Rates and expo in the transmitter are fine for normal model flying with no flight control board. Hi Andrew there is one thing I can’t seem to find with fixed wing set up. I can’t get my servo horns fitted very close to 90 degrees, is it done in inav somewhere? Thanks
@AndrewNewton9 ай бұрын
Centre your servos then mount the arms as close to 90 as the spline teeth will allow. Doesn't have to be perfect. Then adjust the pushrod lengths to level the control surfaces. You can adjust the servo mid points in the Outputs page but INAV will take care of it if you're in the ballpark.

Hello Andrew! Excellent video, I would like to answer a question if possible. I'm almost ready to make the first flight using INAV on an airplane, I only did tests with the airplane on the ground and stopped. I noticed that when I'm in manual mode, the control surfaces, elevator, ailerons and rudder, move as much as possible, but when I switch to ACRO, the surfaces move very little, even with the sticks at 100%. Does this happen because I'm at zero speed? Or is something wrong? Thank you very much in advance!
@AndrewNewton11 ай бұрын
That is normal. Manual gives maximum throws while all other modes have less throw to allow extra movement for stabilisation. If you are concerned the movement is not enough you can increase he FF for roll and pitch in the PID tuning page.
@RenatoSchiavetti10 ай бұрын
@@AndrewNewton Hello, thank you very much for the answer! I've already increased the FF values to get more command. I needed to do this because I'm going to take off the plane from the runway and when we start accelerating, the plane may deviate from the center of the runway to the left or right, that's when I'll need a lot of rudder control to bring it back to the center. I was worried that the FF close to maximum would be a setting that could interfere with the pid tuning, but from what I understand the FF shows the INAV what is the maximum command that the plane can have in stabilized flight, is that correct? Thanks again for the support!
@AndrewNewton10 ай бұрын
Roll Rate, Pitch Rate and Yaw Rate, in degrees per second, set the maximum rotation rates. FF sets how much stick movement is passed through to the servos. Set FF so you get about 80% of the full manual throws when in ACRO mode.

@@AndrewNewton I would like to answer just one more question if possible, I promise it is the last one! Before taking the first flight I am doing all the tests possible to avoid making mistakes on the big day. And one of these tests is to select autonomous flight modes with the plane stopped (zero speed) to see what happens. I noticed that when the plane is disarmed, no key works, not even the failsafe if i remove the receiver, but when the plane is armed, even at zero speed, when I activate the Return to Home key, the plane does nothing, perhaps because I configured it to ignore RTH if the plane is not 30 meters away, but when I activate Loiter (Position Hold) or Cruise mode the plane starts the engine. The same happens if I remove the receiver to test Failsafe. As the plane is stopped, I wanted to know if is this a normal behavior or if there is any way to tell the inav not to do anything if these switches are activated or if i losst signal (with the plane stoped) Thank you again!

@@AndrewNewton Thank you! I‘ll have a look in a few days. Just recieved my speedy bee f405 wing yesterday !what a cool piece of Hardware! But there is a lot to learn. I came from a flying field with planes and jets, always used Spektrum Receiver/Gyros and a few quads on betaflight and have to get used to it without trim Buttons and the other settings. But your Video helps a lot for the first steps 🙏🏻So you have to fly - land and trim again? Or am I right, that the auto trim is used for the manual flight later?🙈

That "Continuously trim..." setting does it all for you in the air, no need to do anything. Auto trim would also do it too but I never use that. I believe you can also fly in Manual and use the radio trims, then land and enter the resulting mid point values in to INAV and rezero the radio trims if you don't want to use the INAV auto trim functions.

@@AndrewNewtonSounds really simple 🎉If it works, I‘ll use c. Trim of course! Less work for me 😅thank you ❤

Hello Andrew, I learned a lot from this video. Can you tell me what is the difference between acro mode and manual mode? Also can you tell me the difference between horizon mode and angle mode? Sincerely
@@AndrewNewton This is exactly what I needed. By any chance would you have the same thing for the radiomaster boxer? Thank you very much Andrew

@@BigbadlyLickedbearThe setup in the boxer is the same as is shown on the Zorro.

Your channel map doesn't need to be (ATER) because all mine are (TAER) and it works perfectly.

Of course, there are many thing that can be different to my simple setup

The stock PID's are garbage. Zero to 2 on P. 25 to 30 on I. FF is usually around 20, keep it to where your manual mode deflection is. Both axis. It will fly out of your hand in Acro mode, and will handle wind much better. It will also hold attitude and trim will not change throughout the speed range. The idea that acro mode is just manual with some P term, which a certain dev believes, is silly. Make it a true rate mode so you can use it.

Thanks, worth testing your suggestions but not in this series.
