Hey everyone, thanks for watching! If you have any suggestions for other paints that would work well for one colour highlights, please post them in the comments, I'd like to explore this in future videos! 😊

My favourite highlight color is Ice Yellow. It is a wonderful way to get highlights all over the mini without losing vibrancy!

I still need to try the Ice Yellow after hearing so many good things, I'm going to pick up a bunch of these suggestions next time I'm at the game store! 😊

Turned out beautifully! I 100% approve of choosing something other than white. As you noted, it limits how much the colours wash out. Frankly, the timing of this video is hilarious. After a painting drought, I got back into the groove a few weeks back and have been using one colour highlights on my new Primaris chapter. In addition to lowering your paint requirements, the method massively helps with lighting, as it pushes every colour into the same spectrum. Combine that with a universal wash colour, and it really helps set the model in its environment. Actually, speaking of *that*, have you ever tried using your base colour as the highlight, then building down to shadow? Been combining that with one colour highlights for edges/scratches/etc, using successive layers of (for my palette) Sepia to build shadows. Between that, using rough highlights, applying them exclusively to light-facing surfaces, and using sponge for some battle damage, it's a surprisingly easy way to get some deceptively detailed-looking battle-worn models.

Thankyou! Firstly good to hear you're back in the groove, we all have painting droughts from time to time! I'm very big on universal wash colours setting the whole model in the same reality, it's one of the reasons I use Nuln Oil so much, and I've definitely been meaning to make a video on the subject, so hopefully I can get around to that! 😆 I haven't really tried the technique you mentioned too much, but I think creating a worn look and damage is very cool on minis, I need to do more experiments in that area for sure! 😀

Yeah the drought was a bit rough lol - and the lack of enjoyment I'd had prior was brutal. It's nice to be having *fun* painting again. Honestly, creating a worn (dare I say "grimdark"?) look is something I've been chasing for a long time. This is the first time I think I've succeeded. And the kicker? It's basically effortless. Layer a wash to build shadow and basic grime, the aformentioned one-colour highlight (honestly, you can stick to successive layers of rough highlights and scratches), sponge some battle damage to emulate primer flakes and pockmarks, and round off with a different wash (in my case, Agrax) towards the feet and lower legs for some built-up grime. Outside of the pain of base coating (definitely NOT my favorite as I lack an airbrush lol), it's mostly what I consider the "fun" parts of painting! And if you batch in small numbers, you hit that blend of minimal down time (due to washes) and being able to customize each paint job slightly. @@TheHobbyGrotto

Honestly, finding techniques that work for you is the most important thing, you're going to be painting a bunch of minis in a similar style for most hobby projects, so you need a plan that works, and that you also enjoy the look of! 😀 Hopefully these new techniques of yours can keep those painting slumps at bay!

Great choice. I personally use a more pale yellow, AP arid earth.

Thankyou for the suggestion, I know there are a lot of great AP colours, I need to check more of them out! I'm certainly interested in trying anything that could be a good universal highlight! 😊

For Vallejo paints I use Iraqi Sand mixed with my base paint. Works for GW paints as well.

thanks for the video! Just a question, do you think that also screaming skull (that I already have in my collection) could be good instead of kislev flesh to mix all highlights? Or do I have to add kislev flesh to my collection?
@TheHobbyGrotto

Thanks for watching! I don't use Screaming Skull myself but it's a very similar colour to Ushabti Bone, which is a colour I do use quite a bit for mixing highlights. Any kind of bone colour is nice for mixing highlights because it doesn't desaturate as much as plain white. I particularly like it for browns, so definitely experiment with the paints you have in your collection before buying anything else. Bone doesn't have that same pinkish warmth combined with yellow that comes from Kislev Flesh however.
