@@simplifygardening I originally embraced container potatoes simply because we get so much rain in the spring, I lose too many to rot if I plant them in the ground. The ease of weeding, sowing and harvesting in containers is a huge bonus.

I just spent 2 days studying fertilizers and what's available in the states. One meets with the criteria, balanced N & P, and about double the Potassium. 3-4-6 But it also has 8% calcium, and 3% sulfur. Slow release. Reasonably priced. I hope it helps/works, because I finally found a source for Sarpo Mira seed potatoes here in the states. I NEED to have success with them this year to produce my own seed for next year. $20/lb, but had to give them a go. Bought 1lb. Very nice video Tony, TYFS

Again Tony, thank you for this video. I grew the salad blue second early potato variety. It's not the most beautiful, but it has amazing purple flesh and makes excellent mashed or roast potatoes. I looked dor them late this year, so was not able to find seed potatoes. But I attempted to do my own seed potato (from last year's small container crop) that looked abysmal, but my friend put it in water, a la 'hydroponic', attempt to give it some life. Three 'survived' and were planted in a tomato planter, and now shoots are appearing, so there's hope!!! So, we are hopeful😆

Hope all goes well Dotty, Just be mindful that ideally the crop would have been good to take the seed from, taking them from something that didnt do so well might result in a poor crop, but a poor crop is better than no crop

All grown in a 50/50 mix of Growmoor multipurpose/homemade compost. 5 containers had 100g of potato specific organic fertiliser. 4 containers had 100g of blood, fish & bone. 4 containers had 100g of 10:10:10 Growmore. I'll let you know how they do. Hi Tony. Not a potato question but seeking advice regarding a raised bed and Hugelkultur. My raised bed is deep- 600mm , and my idea is to build up the bed in layers. We are blessed with plenty of hugel so the first layer is sorted. The subsequent layers will be grass clippings, hay, and topsoil mixed with compost. Now , I have some well rotted moo poo and plenty of wood ash from the log burner. So the question is : where would you suggest I add these to the bed ? My first thoughts were to add some wood ash onto the bottom layer ( the hugel ) , the moo poo mixed in with the topsoil and a sprinkling of wood ash to finish off. What do you reckon ? TIA.

Hi Tony, very informative video. I've grown potatoes (Charlotte) in pots for the last 3 years now, and had some great crops from them. But I have found cooking them to be difficult.. last year and other years, after only about 5 minutes of boiling, they start to fall apart. The outer half inch or so comes away and the rest goes to mush...any suggestions would be much appreciated, ie would inconsistent watering cause this?
@simplifygardening Жыл бұрын
Yes stewart because the potatoes go through a dry spell then take on moisture to quick and this causes cracking on the inside of the tuber. be more consistent if possible

Is it financially worth it growing potatoes without first having your own compost? The cheapest multipurpose seems to be about £0.10/L, so one of these is £3 to fill without any cost of additional feeds, seed potatoes or the pots if you dont have them. Would you get £3+ of potatoes out at the end of the season? For that price in a shop, you could about 4-5kg of potatoes. Be interested in your thoughts

You have a point. But try to think longer term with this. Those pots could last you 25 years, the compost can be rejuvenated with minerals, also store bought potatoes can be used! It will all pay for itself after the first harvest.

Unfortunately Oakland Gardens do not post items outside the UK?

No they dont and I am trying to find an alternative for outside the UK

Most of those potato varieties that you listed I think are European varieties. I've never heard of some of them. I have grown dark nordland and Yukon Gold, both are excellent and I will grow them again this year. Other varieties I typically grow are red Pontiac, kennebec, and Irish cobbler. The red Pontiac is a very prolific early season potato, it grows a lot of potatoes.

Yeah it’s difficult to include them all maybe I will need a variety video

Coconut coir is not a sustainable medium for UK gardens. UK is a nation of shopkeepers and gardeners so we shouldn’t rely on foreign imports re soil or imports.

@@Katya-zj7ni I love how coir works, but I can't ignore the fact that it's not really "green" or "sustainable" when it's being shipped across oceans burning up diesel. I'm trying to get away from using any purchased inputs at all, but it's difficult.

Wood Prairie Family Farms out of Maine offers some certified seed potato varieties from the UK we ordered Sarpo Miras this year and they look amazing growing in containers the foliage is twice the size of our Yukon Golds but we haven't harvested them yet 👍

I'm in NA too, and have tried all in your list except the Irish cobbler. Will have to give them a try next spring. Have you tried Warbas? I love the Warba: they're high-yielding, cute as a button (marbled with pink) and seem to be insect and disease resistant. And they always come out of the ground perfectly formed and so clean they appear pre-washed.

Is it ok to mix the coconut coir with shop bought peat free compost and if so what percentages would you recommend. Thanks for such informative videos

You can but may find it already has it in check the ingredients first
