Flew on a RAF air to air mission from Brize on one of the first four of these. RAF livery and out over the North Sea tanking Typhoons for three hours.......awesome. Very weird experience to be eating a sandwich at 17,000ft over the sea and watching a Typhoon crew eating their sandwiches approx 25ft from my window whilst refuelling. We waved at each other and photographed each other. For a few of the newer pilots, it was their first live refuel from an A330 so they were curious and took lots of photos. The best day ever! I was unaware that a few of these are leased out for commercial work, but of course it make perfect sense. Some of the crews flying these in RAF service at the start were 'civvi' captains who already had a ton of Airbus hours. They were given RAF rank as reservists and helped to train the new RAF crews who had not flown Airbus aircraft and systems. Nice job as you got to do some very interesting flying as well as keeping your airline job and were paid by the RAF/MOD as training captains as well. They are incredible aircraft and the refuelling panel in the cockpit is behind the pilots, facing aft and has large monitor screens fed by cameras on the airframe, giving excellent views of aircraft coming in to hook up. I spent much of the flight on the flight deck chatting with the crew. So lucky to have had the opportunity. Once in a lifetime no doubt.

@lawrencemartin60414 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, they don't require any interior changes. The seats stay and the entire aircraft looks exactly the same as any other A330 passenger jet. The clever stuff is already 'plumbed in' when the airframe is built and consists of the extra tanks and refuel equipment. Obviously, they fit the drogue lines in pods on wing hard points and one in the tail but I am not sure if any internal tanks are retro fitted in cargo bays, but I was told that the aircraft I flew on with the RAF, is capable of carrying a full compliment of passengers as well as tanking jets on the way to Afghan...or wherever. Pretty impressive payload capability!

This is not a MRTT or a military aircraft. Aircraft is not fitted with AAR capability. Operated on the civilian register by a civilian company. Would purely be used by the RAF during times of war for troop transport as per the contract with Air Tanker (a civilian company) as part of a atrategic reserve. Companies such as FedEx have similar conditions with the USAF.

As an MRTT, are the military refueling stations blocked from passenger's view? Does this reduce the A330 seating capacity? There didn't seem to be any refueling apparatus beneath the wings or beneath the rear fuselage. Is this removed for Let's Get Pissed in Spain flights?
