5:57 : TLK trains are operated by old not refurbished cars without restaurant car, AC and power outlets. IC trains are operated with modernized cars or EMU's (Pesa Dart / Stadler Flirt) and contain a restaurant car. The goal of PKP iC is to replace all TLK trains with IC trains.

Interesting, though I feel like TLK should still be around, mostly as a cheaper alternative on some corridors, similar to Intercites Eco or Ouigo over in France. Rail tickets might be cheap in Poland by Europe wide standards but for Poland this is probably about what they can manage and with the TLK being the lowest tier option, I still see the need for such a budget friendly train being there. Especially considering how other forms of low cost travel like Flixbus/Flixtrain and Snälltåget have become dominant over the last 5 or so years.

@@drdewott9154 TLK are actually the same cathegory and their prices are the same, all TLK's and IC's are public connections ordered and paid for by the Ministry of Transport . Varying names of categories are only to distinguish if it's new or refurbished train (IC) or partly/not (TLK). Ultimately, when the last cars are upgraded or removed, the TLK category will expire. Currently, and so most of TLK connections look that only individual cars are of a slightly older standard. Paradoxally, most frequent all 2nd class cars are fully refurbished, but 1st class cars not xD

TLK - Old carragies, usually with 8 seats per compartment, without AC and power outlets. IC - New, or modernized carragies with 6 seats per compartment (or without compartments, only with one big space), every carrage have an AC and power outlets. EIC - Basically the same as IC, but with less stops, due to "Express" thing. EIP - Premium fastets Pendolino trains in Poland ;)

EP07 belongs to a family of electric locos that was started in 1962, when Polish State Railways had ordered and bought 20 class EU06 locos from English Electric complete with a license to build them in Poland. Their design was based on British Rail class 83. Several derivative classes of EU06 were developed later in Poland.

I rode those a lot two years ago when I arrived in Poland, but now, those old carriages are becoming quite rare. It has been mandated that train toilets that flush to the tracks will not be permitted to operate in Poland beyond the end of 2024.

TLK is often extended by passengers to "Tani Letni Koszmar" which means "Cheap Summer Nightmare" :P It basically has guarantee only to have wheels. The 8-person compartments are a nightmare if full, they try to replace it with 6-persons ones or the non-compartment cars. In the Intercity category one of the guarantees is not to have those 8-persons compartments
@Szpagin
@Szpagin 3 жыл бұрын
Also, to add to "summer nightmare" experience, TLK trains lack air-conditioning. Standing in a crowded steel can in 30+ Celsius heat is something I hope never to experience again. IIRC it was intially planned to withdraw TLK category by 2020, but we'd likely see them for the next couple of years.

@@Szpagin after traveling on some trains here in Germany with broken a/c's, I almost even prefer older carriages with openable windows despite not having a/c. If that thing is broken and you can't open a window, it gets INCREDIBLY hot in there... Edit: And a true nightmare are the Flixtrains in Germany during summer. No a/c, but the windows can't be fully opened, just a tiny little gap! That is such a huge difference to the windows on TLK trains, which can be fully openend.

You really need to go for a ride on some of the longest connections in Poland! Those trains also have couchettes and sleeping cars. Ones I mean are for example Przemyśl - Szczecin. Also, commenting on the train you went. That was one of my favourite ones. An old one, slightly stinky inside (yes, I'm a train deviant and I love that old smell of trains xD). The toilet was ACTUALLY really clean, compared to how it was years ago in Poland. Back in time you had to carry your own toilet paper and soap to the toilet. Sometimes there was even no water in there. There are some connections in Poland where part of the route is not electrified - in those cases you can then see how the train is changing it's head unit from electric to diesel one, and back.

I worked in Pulp and Paper Mill in Kwidzyn in automation service. Most of the equipment was from the West, even the Polish build paper machines were build on Beloit (Wisconsin, USA, a Mercedes of the paper machines) licence. Pulp machines were Voith (Germany). All automation equipment on 'Pulp Machines' was Fairchild, Foxboro, Eurocontrol. The Soda Recovery Boiler was designed by giant Babcock & Wilcox. Most of our documentation was in English, singed at the bottom: Simon's Ltd., Vancouver, Canada. SKF Steel berings, Loctite sealants, spare parts - everything was in the warehouse.

Actually, it's really nice (and a bit of nostalgic) to watch this video at the beginning of 2024, knowing that the TLK train category is slowly dying. Each year PKP Intercity carries the modernization of more and more cars, therefore upgrading them to IC standards. Many connections are also served by electric multiple units, fresh and equipped with the quiet zone. I'd recommend you to visit Poland again and try some EMUs! ❤

About the carriage designation here is a little bit of clarification. Old 24,5m carriages that are true second class have 10 compartments and nothing in the designation B10_____ indicates if it is with 8 seats per compartment or 6 seats. The number after B (in case of second class, first class has A and mixed classes is AB) in case of compartment cars indicates the number of physical compartments (as said before no matter if 8 seat or 6 seat) and in case of open saloon carriages it means the number of seats divided by 8 (sort of categorising into virtual 8 seat compartments) so 72 seat modernised 24,5m carriage will be B9nopuz (p indicates completely open saloon configuration). The letter z indicates the type of power supply of the carriage. Those with z letter have electronic converter which converts high voltage provided by the locomotive to low voltage for lighting, charging batteries and other things (heating not included as it draws so much current that it must be constantly provided in high voltage without any conversion). Those without that letter have their own dynamo that is connected to wheelset so during motion the energy to lighting and battery charging is provided, when train stops the lighting power supply is changed automatically to draw from battery. Simply put during summer when heating isn't needed such carriage doesn't need to be connected electrically to locomotive, it is fully autonomous as long as the stops aren't too long to deplete batteries completely. 1st class carriages have 9 compartments which are physically bigger so more room for legs and 6 seats by definition. Actually the AB9nou/AB9nouz mixed class of the 112At type (under AB9nouz designation there are also very much different 141A-20 carriages) is a converted full first class carriage where simply in 5 of 9 compartments they changed the seating to 8 seats so the second class in this mixed carriage is a weird hybrid of 8 seat seating typical for 2nd class with the leg room that is typical for 1st class. PKP IC often runs 1st class carriages as 2nd class but they mark them by A4 paper with printed info on entrance doors, currently they don't practice permanent class reduction. However if they started such practice in future, then the carriages will be designated A9nouy. Also in all those designations the letter n means forced air heating system, carriages designated as B10ou or B10ouz have radiator heating system under seats so from passenger point of view they are the same old stock as these here unless you decide to look what is hidden under seats. As for more modern 26,4m carriages they can be recognised by the letter m, the 2nd class is 11 compartment B11mnouz and 1st class is 9 compartment A9mnouz. 2nd class is 6 seated with leg space like in 2nd class old carriages, additional 1,9m is used to add a whole additional compartment so between modernised old (there are better 6 seat modernisations that the 6 seat on the video) and new ones there may be absolutely no difference in compartment characteristics. 1st class in 26,4m is even better than 1st class in 24,5m because the number of compartments is the same but even more room for legs.
@Kardor
@Kardor Жыл бұрын
No, the "z" stands for central power system. I mean, the 3kv thing that you connect from the loco. In Czech Republic you can encounter "ee", which stands for exactly the same thing, but when there is one "e", it means only the heating resistive system can be powered through the 3kv power. Those carriages with 2nd class and 6 seats are 141A model, these were refurbished in the 00s to have 6 seats. In the beginning they started just like the 111A you also showed. Nice to have a look on how they were with green seats! The actual only place majority of these are held is Warszawa Grochów depo and I hate it, because Polish TLK with carriages from other depos are often 8-seats, and Grochów gives carriages only to trains that start in Warszawa and Lublin.

Unfortunately it isn't as you've said: Poland is definitely not a rail-friendly country. Ever since the nineties there has been a long period of Beeching axe-style cuts, with a lot of the network being closed. It's not as visible near Warsaw, where there haven't been a lot of railways in the first place, but in the west (where the country inherited a dense railway network from Prussia) the network is severely thinned out. Sometimes even the main train corridors are underserviced or undermaintained. For example, the rebuilding of the absolutely crucial Katowice - Kraków corridor was being worked on for years now, the deadline for it's completion keeps being pushed further and further. Service isn't great for such an important corridor, though starting this year things are starting to improve. The travel time is abysmal, too, but that's another story.

If their second class coaches were open saloon style, there would be more open seats, because you can seat many more people. Except for a few coach-class streamliners like the Santa Fe El Capitan, and the Trailblazer and Jeffersonian on the old Pennsylvania R.R., all compartments require a first class fare in the U.S., by tradition. Amtrak used to run slumbercoaches on the Lakeshore Ltd, which was allowed you to sleep in your own room for the price of a coach ticket and $67, but those went away when the Heritage Fleet was retired.

Actually, the thing looks different, because TLK is just older standard on PKP IC trains and is being shutting down - until last cars are refurbished or totaled and will be only IC category (full UIC-Z) especially taking into account the fact that IC's costs the same as TLK's . TLK's are just not yet fully refurbished sets and that's all. The most often on TLK's is that some cars are refurbished or now and only some cars aren't and that's only reason why it's TLK. More and more TLK connections are systematically "upgraded" to IC's cause more and more cars are refurbished and bought.

I think both the B10nouz and B10nou has been originally 2nd class cars - they have 10 compartments - the 8 or 6 seats are simply different refurbishments of similar cars. The 1st class cars had only 9 compartments in this car family. However PKPIC often runs 1st class cars as 2nd class - but these cases the cars typically original 1st class cars - painted as 1st class just they could be used with 2nd class ticket.

@@bodecsabi so I got confused because according to this page: pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_wagon%C3%B3w_pasa%C5%BCerskich_eksploatowanych_w_Polsce there was no 10x6 2nd class cars but also no 10x6 1st class cars as you said. I don't know how accurate that wiki page is. What I'm sure that "z" was a mark of declassed 1st class. However I found that it could have also other meanings depending on point in time.

@@Slubicjusz Interesting. I think the resolution is that the seats are new, definitely not the original ones, and in some cars they decided to install 6 seat compartments (whether in plans these were intended as 1st class, but never realized i do not know). In Hungary in 1990s there were such refurbishments with 2nd class Poznan cars with 8 seat compartments, which were refurbished as 2nd class cars with 6-seat compartments. As an example (with these cars started the Hungarian IC service in 1991) www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/foto/201702/DSCN1798.jpg - this is a 2nd class car and always have been 2nd class.

BTW, Koleje Mazowieckie has nothing to do with PKP. All those regional operator are just the way of the regions to kick PKP out, because Przewozy regionalne (Regional carrier) has a miserable opinion and quality of service.

Hope this is not a dumb question. I am not yet experienced with trains... seems like a corridor with windows is a waste of windows. Why not a central hall, with smaller compartments on either side, each with their own windows? Thanks!

..but in fact it's an early 1960's British design, as it is modernized Class 86 loco. I think I know what you mean though, I presume sides made of grooved steel. Yes, it looks quite soviet, as Russians used grooved steel for many of their vehicles of any kind:). This model of loco originally had plain steel panels just like the British original, but they have changed it over time for grooved ones which gives them more durability.

Typical Central European train service: old-fashioned and rather "basic" but decent, inexpensive, reliable and typically offering such services as manned ticket offices, a bicycle carriage - features that have become rather rare in Western Europe.
