As a boy in the 1940's, I made this trip on the old D & SL coal-fired Moffat road train from Denver as far as Craig many, many times. It seems strange but happy to see it celebrated now as a tourist attraction. In those days we could board at rural places by flagging the train down and hopping on, then stopping at our ranch in Grand County.

As always, another first-rate video from Simply Railway. How nice that you were able to take your chère maman with you. One quibble: I've seen several KZbin videos on the Rocky Mountaineer, and everyone tends to skip over the hotel part. How are the rooms? What amenities does the hotel offer? How many hours did you spend there? It would be nice to know those details.
@leed206

From my experience in the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer, you chose and pay extra if you want to upgrade your hotel accommodation & there are a few levels. Mine was a while ago but & I can't remember if I took upgrade or not, but it was acceptable and clean etc.
@SimplyRailway

Hey there! So the hotel is actually very nice. The rooms are large with everything you can expect from a decent hotel in North America. Food and drinks are NOT included at the hotel which I think is a shame in my opinion. I did not film that much at the hotel since I wanted to enjoy the time with my mom. But in Glenwood Springs, we went straight to the hot springs and got some food downtown. 🙂 I hope it helps Thibault

Denver Regional Transit District owns Union Station and does not allow the Rocky Mountaineer access to it. Hence the shuttle to the actual location. 9:50, the genset tool car at the end of the train. For $1500 there should be the Auto Train type option to bring motor vehicles from Denver to Moab.

Did they make you exit the vestibules in tunnels? Did your Mom have fun? I also think that car behind the engines is a diesel-generator “power car”. Some American freight locomotives never had a separate generator for passenger train operation. The “power car” created all of the electrical power to the train for light, heat and air conditioning. It will also generate smoke and that diesel smell.

That was actually the last car on this train. Notice all the vents on the side as seen when it enters the Moffat Tunnel.

A very disappointing, ridiculously expensive experience ! There are two truly remarkable things about American and Canadian trains, it is the extreme lack of any reasonable speed, bordering the pathetic, and the enormous amount of money you have to spend for a decent accommodation in them. Just decent. There is an advantage though: you can easily stay in shape by jogging alongside the train when it moves (barely) and get back on it a couple miles farther, this at almost any step of the way! One more point: restrict your travel to the very Rocky part. The rest of the landscape is so dull and boring that some people riding the desperately long section between Toronto and Calgary for example, are still sleeping to this day! Save your money for a train pass in Switzerland. For the Amtrak cost, you will get both the air ticket, the rail pass and real trains...

@@lalakerspro way too many planes yes because you do not know what a decent train looks like, even not touristic. Common sense would be to have bullet trains all over like Europe, Japan or China. I really fail to understand how it's possible to justify such a price. Food looks good, but it's nowhere near being luxury, nor is the seating, and you're not even sleeping in the train.
