As about an 7 or 8 y.o girl, i rode with my newly adoptive parents from chicago to California. I remember going along the Feather River Canyon. Then after visiting new family, then Coast Starlight up from L A to San Francisco. Never forgot how wonderful and exciting train travel was. Roses on pink liben tablecloths in the dining car. A shirley temple while listwning to pianist and passengers sang in the club car. Playing go Fish with other kids there. Sleeping in the upper bunk. Good memories !!

Next time, you should go to Hotel Colorado while in Glenwood Springs… one of the most historic hotels in Colorado (built in 1893) with a diverse history and notorious for being one of the most haunted places in America. It sits just above the hot springs. Very cool.

We did this trip from Vancouver to Banff. It was a similar experience. We understand that the IS version started during COVID when the borders were closed and many of their American customers couldn’t cross the border. So they moved the train south. In Canada they also offer GOLDLEAF service but it doesn’t work in the US because of the tunnels - double decker cars are too tall. We felt the SILVERLEAF worked great for us. We loved it. (Your car looked empty.)

*A little over 20 years ago the Silver Lining to our car being wrecked 1700 mi from home was I was able to arrange to travel in an Amtrak sleeper berthing compartment. I would travel everywhere that way if I could afford it... & if I had the time. As expensive as flying, as slow as driving, but super comfortable and the food was delicious.* 😻

If you decide to take this trip, I recommend that you arrive the day before and stay at The Crawford Hotel in Denver. It is adjacent to the train station and would be a convenient and luxurious place to stay before your trip. Also, transportation in Denver is a dream using their light rail from the airport to the station.

I took this train from Chicago to Grand Junction, Colorado. It was 11+ hours late in getting into Grand Junction. While part of the delay was weather related, the rest was maintenance related. Brakes in Denver. Tunnel issues near Winter Park. The crew reached its time limit in the middle of nowhere and we had to wait on a siding for a replacement crew to be brought in. Never again.

It is an amazing trip in the comfort of a train. We forget that it was all done with ox trains of families looking for a better life long ago and what it cost in lives and despair. They had real guts.
