Scuba diving is all about redundancy because let's face it we’re going somewhere we really shouldn’t be going. You should be familiar with a bunch of acronyms for your pre-dive safety checks so you’re sure your gear is working but there are lots of things that you need to check before a dive, and don’t leave it up to your dive guide because they can miss things like the best of us and it’s best to question something and prevent an incident than the alternative.
So just like the neverending preflight checks, your pilot goes through before a flight here are, in no particular order, The Best Checks To Do Before A Dive.

I'm a big fan of the bubble check as an addition to a standard buddy check. After you've done everything in this video, and done a buddy check, you head into the water and all divers in the team observe each other, looking for bubbles from 1st stages, 2nd stages, low pressure inflator hoses, BCDs/wings, and dry suits (if you're wearing them). Best way to check for any leaks.

On a medium sized ribboat. Make absolutely 100% sure your stuff is secured with bungycord. I have seen full set fly overboard during the trip and it was a bit choppy water. If your not sure ask the captain or someone of the diveschool who does know. Believe me steeltank, BCD, weight and your basics can fly up to 5m in the air on choppy seas. Fun to see but very dangerous and it means end of the dive of the owner of the gear.

Buddy checks are important! When diving abroad I practically never see the 'holiday divers' do any substantial buddy check (if any at all). This is really important, use the acronym BAR: Buoyancy-check your BCD and drysuit inflate and deflate-actually put air in them and let it out) and explain how your kit works to your buddy-you'll want them to know this if they have to rescue you Air-check both second stages provide air, the air tastes/smells normal and your SPG isn't fluctuating. Releases-Show your buddy all the clips/buckles on your kit and tell them how to unclip it-including your drysuit hose if you have one. Also explain how to remove your weight belt/integrated weights. Also explain the correct out of air response for your kit. Primary donate? How is your octopus uncliped?

Just out of curiosity, are you Bsac certified? I only ask because it was them who introduced me to the simple BAR acronym. :)

Yes and not just overseas this is also true in UK. And not just novice divers some were professional divers. However most girls do do these checks before a dive.

Before a giant stride off a boat, check that you have some air in your BCD... because if you're overweighted you''re going to be headed to the bottom at a rather quick rate (you're going to sink like a stone). And besides, you should have checked that your inflator is working anyway. Not sure if this is a superstition or not, but as soon as I get my tank setup I taste the air in the tank with several breaths. This is usually a half hour or so before entry and I'm thinking (maybe not too rationally) that if I start to get dizzy the fill might be contaminated. Regardless, it's just about the same as checking that the regulators are working.

@@heather-celestephoenix4125 Well learn something new everyday. I'd never heard of a negative decent dive before. Sounds rather dangerous. If you had trouble equalizing you could have serious ear injury. Not to mention if you had an equipment problem. Sounds like something I'd want to avoid, not worth the risk. www.sportdiver.com/how-to-make-scuba-diving-negative-entry-like-pro
@mechanikos84
@mechanikos84 5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelatherton826 Negative entry is preferred in strong current/pour surface conditions etc. No wasting air on the surface, and, if properly weighted, you won't sink thát fast. Just prepare yourself for it.
@michaelatherton826
@michaelatherton826 5 жыл бұрын
@@mechanikos84 Yeah. I looked it up, but I see too many risks and several alternatives. Why are you diving in really bad swells or chop anyway? How are you going to get back on the boat? I just don't see this as "recreational" diving.
@mechanikos84
@mechanikos84 5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelatherton826 Don't do it if you don't want to offcourse. I do it when driftdiving, so surfaceconditions don't separate buddyteams. A few meters down conditions can be very, very different. And it certainly does not have to be dangerous, not even for a first time driftdiver. Just study it a but more if you're interested, it fun too! Do not be discourridged by one old man story (yes, i read your link) who can't do it anymore. Have fun, and stay inside your comfortzone 👌

The single most important thing when diving open circuit is checking that your air is on, before you jump pull out your gauge and breath through your regulator a couple of times. You should see a small drop of a few psi or a bar; if it drops a lot and recovers that means your air is partially on; if it drops a lot and doesn't recover that means you air is off. Everything else is gravy that can either be fixed underwater, or won't kill you nearly as quickly as having your air off.

Hi guys, I just had my first ever dive. It was directly into the sea. I didn't perform anything by myself and only my instructor showed me around by pushing me. Five meters for 10 minutes. I was learning from many KZbin channels that one must get trained in a pool or training site with calculated depth and visibility. However it was really low visibility with sun almost set.

My instructor taught me a great acronym Because we really aren’t fish B - Buoyancy (BCD, Wings, Dry suit inflate and deflate correctly) W - Weights (belt, quick release, trim weights) R - Releases (all straps and equipment are clipped in and attached) A - Air (breathe through regulator and octo, check purges and SPG doesn’t change to much) F - Final (got gloves, hood, fins and mask, any other accessories needed for that dive) Always use this now before entering the water

On my last dive trip I forgot to check one of the most important things you need to check. My air. Rookie mistake. Was all suited up and ready to jump in. Fortunately I hadn't jumped in the water yet and the deck hand turned it on for me. I'll never do THAT again.

I get really twitchy with deck hands and crew touching my rig. I turn it on. I check it. I don't need them touching it while 'checking', they're more likely to do a dumb thing like a "a quarter turn back"...

If you are certified, then go to your LDS and ask to join them on one of their pool training days. You don’t have to partake in their class, but rent their equipment (if you don’t have your own) and practice a bit. My LDS doesn’t charge if you have your own equipment, and a minimal charge to rent their stuff. I often do a pool dive with new kit first, just to familiarize myself with it before I hit the open waters. Good luck. 👍

Hi Simply Scuba Watched, Liked, Subscribed. Thanks for online free training. It worth lives indeed. Can you guide me/us how to flip upwards or downwards 1) when on surface and 2) when under water? I am not a swimmer and never swam in my life. So when I had my first contact with water, I was unable to keep my face upwards.
