I am no longer a fan of the open office. I think it decreases productivity. I think a semi-open, where people have protected backs and other's can't look at their screens, plus being able to personalize their work space, would be better. Own rooms is even better though.

While I agree that it’s preferable, I doubt that it’s “more productive”. What reason would you need to keep your screen private other than being “non-productive”? Like……browsing social media? =D. I’m sure Apple has logged statistics on this comparing open office to closed office. I’m sure if they saw a decrease in productivity, they would have changed their concept.
@rasmusrasmusson
@rasmusrasmusson 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattc16 It's in general considered the other way around, that productivity decreases when you move to an open office, because people get disturbed a lot easier. The privacy concern is psychological, mostly, to have your back protected, but also because you may not want everything to be on display. E.g. an email, or just feeling surveilled. And yes, social media, as people take breaks sometimes. A bad manager tries to monitor the staff at all times, a good manager focuses on productivity.

Agree, my extrovert friends and I keep getting distracted while my introvert friends keep getting disturbed. Not ideal at all, also actually standing up and going somewhere to discuss your idea with your colleagues can motivate you since you finally do something different rather than just sitting all day, you will be excited to do that.

Would be great if their commitment to sustainability involved not trying to get people to buy a brand new phone every year... or only making the batteries replaceable after they came under major fire for their irreplaceability. A company can apparently only care so much about sustainability when their entire purpose is to make money... still, cool building, and I'm glad it has solar panels :) Better than if it didn't!

I’m surprised when people think that Apple is driven by money, when if you look at the history and Steve Jobs’s story, one would understand that money is simply the byproduct of immense creativity, teamwork and innovation. Microsoft, in contrast, was always the company who prioritised profit. Apple prioritised design and simplicity.
@gusfring96
@gusfring96 2 жыл бұрын
@@maryna4338 you are describing Apple during Steve Jobs' time. Yes he really made sure Apple was at the top of innovation during his tenure as CEO, but it went downhill after his death. Jobs wouldn't ever design and sell a 1000 dollar monitor stand. And Apple nowadays is known for luxury and social status more than innovation and creativity.

@@gusfring96 Its true, Apple isn't the same without Steve. But Apple was a creation of so many people who worked together as a team, and none of them would be able to achieve such incredible things without each other. Steve is not an exception to that. People like Jony Ive and Tim Cook are really essential in this, among all others. Apple still has Steve's fingerprints all over it to this day. He really succeeded in building a company which can innovate and reinvent things over and over. It's true, some products are overpriced. But even when Steve was there those mistakes were sometimes made. They're just mistakes, miscalculations, lack of clear thinking from people who decide the price. Nonetheless, the company still designs and creates truly beautiful products, and I think Steve would be proud of some of them, like AirPods, for example. The company has gone through so many transformations: changes of CEOs, boards of directors... there were many mistakes along the way, and many lessons learned. I think the company lives on as an expression of Steve's soul. And let's admit it, it still creates wonderfully designed products, and quite the variety of them.

This building was not designed by Steve Jobs as the introduction affirms. The design came from Norman Foster Architects with Jobs collaborating as a client. Foster caries a high tech and very detailed approach to their design, this aligns with apple's approach as well. They designed various buildings for apple elsewhere.

Architects for the looks and layouts, structural engineers so it doesn’t collapse, mechanical engineers so that you won’t freeze/boil, electrical engineers so that you can charge your iPhone and do much more, then PMs who run the job from the conception, push the paperwork and control costs, construction managers who managed the site and screamed at everyone, superintendents who managed their crews and noticed problems that were acceptable on the paper but not in the real world, engineers to solve these problems again, then all discipline inspectors, client agents and much much more. There are several errors in the video; besides mixing footage from other parts of the campus while describing another (ex. showing the Caffé Macs doors for the Steve Jobs Theater), a couple of things: 1. The Steve Jobs Theater is still called that, it is not "now known as the Apple auditorium". 2. The main Caffé Macs isn't the only restaurant; they do have a couple w/in the center that are specific food themes, Japanese and Latin cuisines. 3. The parking garage below the ring is two stories, but there is also a full parking garage located on one end of the campus. There's plenty of available footage of the Health and Wellness Center; the one shown is the studio in Culver City for Fitness+. The Visitor Center is the only place the public can go; "without a pass" -- this pass would be for external business partners only. Even if you know someone that works at Apple you won't be able to go into the main campus. One exception is a Friends and Family series of weekends that they allowed people in, but that was pre-pandemic, and was still limited where people can go. There's also available footage of the AR room in the Visitor Center, and the experience is nothing like VR shown "flying" through the Steve Jobs Theater. It's a 12k lb aluminum table of the campus, and using an iPad has AR overlays of the campus showing various aspects (ex. temperature control, lighting scenarios, and office layout), including a few Easter Eggs thrown in for fun.

Na, just put a 1 inch strip of frost a foot from the bottom and foot from the top on all the wall. Put a 1/2 inch strip of frost along the edge of every door on the side the opens. You could probably get away with just the strip on the doors honestly. Both would be safer though. It would solve 90% of the running into the glass problem. The strips wouldn't block the sight lines. If anything honestly, it would improve them. (Insert complicated explanation of how depth perception works here.) It would also improve them because looking at them would make your brain go, "Oh look, the company I work for cares about my safety." Which yes, ends up helping sightlines. ... because slightlines on their own are meaningless; it's us humans that give value to them and that value is semi controlled by our emotions.

I love the fact that after multiple people walked into the galss doors which were put there by design for safety the employees put sticky notes (you know the harmless little pieces of paper that dont harm the glass by any means) for their own safety were told to take them down because they distrupt the design of the building. Fucking apple you cant make this shit up....

I LOL’d at that as well. Employees are being injured, 2 have gone to the hospital, and apples response is “don’t mess with the design”. If a non-apple company had “design elements” that caused trips to the hospital, I’m sure OSHA would be quick to step in. Being a tech giant though apparently rules and governance don’t apply.
