I carry two things that take up little space on the camper. One is a small inverter arc welder which will run off batteries through another 3800 watts inverter if I keep the engine running. There was also available an arc welder adapter that fitted under the bonnet of a Land Cruiser or other four wheel drive fitted with a heavy alternator, and which runs off the alternator--but I have not seen them advertised for a long time now. I keep my welder with a selection of rods, and the welder cost me fifty bucks new on special some time ago, the mask and some oxy-goggles cost about the same. For under two hundred dollars, the price of a cheap battery. I was set up with rods and a welder and hand torch for propane. Probably more than that now--but compare the price of a tow truck outback. The other useful repair fix is high strength quality silver brazing rod--I carry the strong stuff, as well as the safe for drinking water plumber's variety. (I also carry that too) and a separate container of flux which serves for both types of rod. The strong silver brazing alloy will repair cracked or broken cast iron as a get-you-home. I also carry a separate propane torch handpiece capable of heating metal. Silver brazing is the only quick fix for cast metal there is on the track. Ordinary brazing rods really need oxy-propane to reach a good heat for a good bond. It is not a bad idea to carry a small Bernzomatic or Prestolite oxy -propane set if one can find the room for it. All of this extra kit including the welding facemask and leads fits into a plastic storage box about 450 mm square. Most times it will never be needed and just takes up precious space. It is not very heavy though, and it could save a life or a ton of money if it IS ever needed.

It's actually better in a Mitsubishi Pajero since they use IRS and IFS, they don't constantly bed into the sand. Mitsubishi Pajero got the Guinness World record for 12 Paris to Dakars unlike Toyota that have only won it once in a highly modified Hilux. You could actually by a factory modified Mitsubishi Pajero that contested the Paris to Dakar at one stage.

Considering how iconic the Binns Track is in Australia, I'm surprised that it does not show anywhere in Google Maps. Particulary the section between Alice Springs and Mt Dare. The Maryvale Road and the Ghan Heritage Road is shown. But not the Binns Track.
