I did this and similar trips in 1963 & 4 with an International 4 wheel drive 1 ton pickup, not nearly as well equipped or powerful as your vehicles and only with ONE vehicle. Our saving grace was front and rear winches with a large 'spade' type anchor which allowed us to pull ourselves out of the worst holes. Without that anchor even with 2 vehicles I think we would still be there -- well our bones might be--.Well done guys, brought back many memories.

I live on the edge of the Simpson Desert in a community called Santa Teresa. The last few months have been super unpredictable. We had three straight weeks of drizzle and rain with nothing at all on the radar or the weather forecast. We’ve had a few other random downpours which turned the ground to mush with no prediction on the BOM. Makes the Simmo way gnarlier if you can’t rely on the forecast. Well done getting out!!! Wow!

The perfect example of how 'NOT' to cross a wet clay pan. A good action packed video all the same. Momentum can be sustained without the wheel spinning, fish tailing, kangaroo hopping antics. But, ten out of ten for the effort. Final thought " He is definitely, positively not borrowing my 4wd " loved the videos... thanks. Stay safe.

Great episode guys, what a drama. I think its worth having a look at some old Malcom Douglas shows. In particular Malcolm Douglas - Australia - One Wet Season (1984). Compared to modern vehicle setups, 4WD and camping techniques, Malcolm Douglas is far superior in every aspect. Vehicle is lighter, simpler to fix, less electronics to go wrong. Recovery in situations worse than yours was achievable with less. Malcolms ability to catch and cook meant it didn't matter how long he was in the bush he could feed himself and survive. I really think in this modern day and age we have lost the old skills which in my opinion are far superior. This all due to the heavy reliance on technology and at the heart of it consumerism.
@6226superhurricane2 жыл бұрын
@Simon Franklin wouldn't make for good drama if they said it's rained so we're just going to camp out for 3 or 4 days until it dries out enough that we can carry on without ripping the tracks up.

Agree. The car that caught fire is owned by an electrician....... I'm not an electrician, my Patrol has wires added for stuff, and I crossed the Simpson early September this year. Nothing caught fire, no tyres blew off the rims, did not get bogged despite plenty of mud sections. And I drove the big red lake obeying the sign which said "go straight on one track" and did not get bogged.

Such a good series... We also experienced some of these conditions... No breakages fortunately... My wife and I were travelling the outback during the same time (Around the week of the Birdsville Races) , we experienced really wet / muddy from North of Cameron's Corner to Innamincka (only the Qld side of the border was open that day), then later on from Terowie SA (near Peterburough) through -via Lillydale Rd to the Silver City Hwy - Very wet , boggy tracks through station country... (The only way we could find along "public tracks" from Port Augusta to NSW without using the paved highways.) Coming back into NSW, EVERY dirt road in the state's west was closed - just like the Birdsville Track had been - when we were in Marree.

I was out there last week. I did the Connie Sue hwy to Neale's Corner then the Anne Beadell to Coober Pedy. The track to Dalhousie Springs was just reopened. I did the French line to the Colson track crossroad and camped there. Next morning went to start the rig, only 10 volts in the battery! It had dropped a cell. A jumper pack is a must have and at this point decided to go the Colson track to the Madigan line and into Alice. Brought a new Battery. Supercheap had them on sale so that was a bonus. $180 compared to over $400 for the right battery for a Ford Ranger! The first part of the French line was flooded everywhere but passable. The Colson track runs between the Dunes so all hard packed sand the whole way. One good thing about all the rain was the Wildflowers were in full bloom everywhere. It was paradise out there and I never saw anyone for three days. Looking forward to doing the QAA next time to Birdsville. Fuel cost $3.10 a litre at the Pink Roadhouse. I brought 10 litres at a cost of $30) to support the new owners of the Roadhouse but didn't need any extra fuel as I can carry 210 litres. People were stranded at Dalhousie for three days before the road reopened according to a nice family I met at the Roadhouse. Me and the dog did the Fink Gorge river Run to the Lasseter hwy heading back home which was stunning. All up did 6000 klms in 12 days and man what a blast. Australia is great country but if fuel prices get much higher it will hurt any prospects for many to afford the travel. The lack of Wildlife out there was concerning. Only saw 6 Kangaroos, one Dingo and two Emus.
