One of Phil Hartman's passion projects was to do a live-action Troy McClure movie, where he plays the out-of-work has-been trying to stay relevant in a modern world. I'd have watched that movie over and over again. RIP Phil Hartman.

I feel like A Fish Called Selma has the perfect ending for Troy when Selma told him “I’ll always remember you and not for your movies” It’s one of those classic James L. Brooks cappers that takes something that seemed silly and superficial and fills it with emotional weight.

Phil Hartman was really taken too soon tbh. Even though he died when I was barely 1 year old, rewatching the older Simpsons episodes, his comedic take on Troy was always handled well, like it was never really "forced" nor did it drag on longer than needed. Phil mastered Troy McClure's character in that department.

@@JohnSmithKillFeds That's fair, since Hartman would probably still be alive if it wasn't for Andy Dick. Jon Lovitz once punched Andy Dick in the face because Dick was the one that gave Hartman's wife drugs (after she'd kicked the habit), which in turn lead to her murder/suiciding him. Lovitz replaced Phil Hartman after he died in his series Newsradio, and told Dick "I wouldn't need to be here if it wasn't for you."

Phil was such a talented, funny, and pleasant individual who had so much left to offer his fans and the rest of the world! His tragic death should never have happened, and it's absolutely heartbreaking that he was a victim of a deeply unhappy person. Sadly similar to the way Judith Barsi, the young voice actor for Annemarie from All Dogs Go To Heaven and Duckie from The Land Before Time, died when she was 10.

Debatable about the s10 thing, s10 did plummet to rock bottom. I consider the Golden Era to be s3-7 (s1-2 had their own charms), the cracks appeared s8 and s9 as the more wacky and "quick lazy joke over character and plot" mentality seeped in... but for a post that more reflects Phil Hartman's input into the series and what once made it so great, yeah, I can go with that.
@mattmcmanus3693
@mattmcmanus3693 5 жыл бұрын
Pj Gathergood yeah the show certainly plummeted when Phil passed away ratings became low and the show has never properly recovered,seasons 8 and 9 had a classic feel to them there was no Jerkass Homer back then was there? Again I could be wrong but didn’t Jerkass Homer begin in season 10? Also seasons 1 and 2 would have had to have been part of the golden era too I would have thought? Sure they were in its infancy back then but they laid the ground work for what was to come it was emotional raw and the storyline’s and characters were very serious back then,also speaking of early seasons Homer sounds different more like Walter Matthau which episode does he change to his current fairy voice?

I've already put my vote in on my own (typically lengthy) comment on the video, but I voted for Ralph Wiggum (who oddly I thought had already been done until I checked), although Gil the salesman might be a fun one, even though he's pretty much post-Golden Era. Ultimately I'd like to see Mr. Burns, one of the show's best characters, done in detail, but I feel that would be a 'big' video best saved for a special occasion.

Absolutely, maybe I don't have the originality to think outside his suggestion but I can't think of anyone better. While it's rightly pointed out that Troy is quite separate in most of his appearances, Hutz always felt like an integral part of Springfield. He's a classic Springfieldian- pathetic, amoral, often dumb and of course hilarious. The city really is a poorer place without him.

Kind of an interesting thought experiment to imagine how Billy West could have continued to portray the character (or at least a similar character) seeing as Zapp Brannigan is West doing an impression of Hartman. Also interesting to imagine what Zapp Brannigan would have been like if he were played by Hartman as intended.

Hello, I'm P.J. Gathergood, you may remember me from such lengthy video comments such as "Season One - Let's Go Through In In Real Time", and "For God's Sake it Was a 60 Second Review, You Don't Need To Write A Whole Goddamned Essay!". Great review on a great (and greatly missed) character, Jims. I think much of the reason why Troy McClure worked so well was that he was (by sad fate of real life) limited to appearing in the Golden Era (and just beyond), and as such was in the time when the writers still knew how to use a character "responsibly" and sparingly. He was used for a gag or a scene when needed, he wasn't shoehorned into needless extended "It'll be funny and unexpected to use him here" scenarios as they've done with some other formerly great characters post-Golden Age (As I like to term it, "Ralph Wiggum Syndrome"), which only serves to water down and even spoil or belittle a character. On a similar theme, I have to say I've never much cared for "A Fish Called Selma". I don't hate it, not by a long shot, but a rare s7 episode that doesn't rank all that highly with me. Maybe it reflects that, whilst it's fun to see more of him, a character like McClure does work best in more compact, tightly constructed little cameos. ...Or maybe it was just simply an episode I didn't like as much. Much kudos too has to go to Phil Hartman's voice acting. As you also touch upon Jims, the character was more about Hartman himself than the writers. I think in any lesser hands, McClure would have quickly become a rather 2D and one-joke character (or as I like to term it, "Disco Stu Syndrome"... I'm joking, ish), and soon run out of steam. It was Hartman's talent and enthusiasm that really made McClure such a notable character. I wonder what inspiration lay behind McClure's creation - yes I know he's partly based on Troy Donahue and Doug McClure (hence the name), but I've always felt there's more mixed in with that. He's a fun pastiche of the washed-up-actor still taking any job going, and who still rates themselves far greater than they actually are, not admitting their glory days are long since passed. In a way, considering how the whole retro film/TV convention thing - where many of those washed-up-but-still-adamant-they're-the-greatest actors can be found - has really exploded in the last 20 years, maybe the series was slightly ahead of it's time in nailing this sort of character. I always thought there was a certain homage to William Shatner in there, a spoof of that perceived arrogance, disregard for others, and belief he is the greatest thing of all time (but done with a total love for that). With that in mind, it is interesting to note that Zapp Brannigan in 'Futurama', who is very much a exaggerated spoof of Kirk/Shatner (and a character which has a number of parallels with McClure), was originally written to be voiced by Phil Hartman, until Hartman died before production and Billy West instead voiced the character. In fact, I was a little surprised you didn't mention Zapp Brannigan in this video, Jims... Maybe you'll save it for those eventual Futurama videos... hint hint!! Who would I like to see done next? Well eventually, Mr. Burns, but that would be a "big" video and could maybe be saved for a special occasion. For now, I'd vote (and I actually thought you'd already done him till I checked), Ralph Wiggum, from his origins right through to the "lazily overused formerly great character" Ralph Wiggum. Or maybe Gil, even though he is pretty much post-Golden Era, but still an interesting character. I was also amused to be reminded that Troy McClure's first appearance was in s2's '"Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment' which was the second 'Simspons' episode I ever got to see (the first being 'Stark Raving Dad'), loooong before the series was ever shown properly here in the U.K. ... And an awesome episode screaming out for a review, Jims. ;)

Every role that he played, he brought a certain bit of charm to! Also Yes I also wanted to see "The President's neck is Missing" Troy earned that plack for sure. I'm glad we'll always have our memories of him!

even the shows writers admitted in their commentary that they always saw Phil Hartman as "the perfect writing filler" and meant that in a good way since they always believed he could make everything funny even if they weren't confident in the material.

One thing you can't deny The Simpsons for, it's their respect for the voice actors and their characters. In most TV shows, if something happens to a voice actor, they get replaced. But in The Simpsons, if something happens to a voice actor, their character is retired or simply never voiced. No matter how big that character is.

@@SaiyanGamer95 Simpsons have replaced many characters, Carl, Martin, Sherri & Terri, Lou, Dr Hibbert, Lunchlady Doris, Judge Snydor, Bumbleeman. Some because the voice actors died and others because the characters are black and the voice actors/Simpsons wanted to have the black characters voiced by black people IRL.

@@unstableordinance I knew about the likes for Carl getting new voices. Personally, I find the choice to be pretty dumb anyway. But I had no idea Lunchlady Doris and Martin got new voices. I was aware when Russi passed away and I believe Martin was silent last I heard.
@Interfaune
@Interfaune 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Grey Griffin replaced Russi Taylor in all of her roles. For Lunchlady Doris, she was first silent for years. But then they replaced Doris Grau with a loophole worthy of Lionel Hutz himself. They just started calling her Lunchlady Dora instead of Doris and casted Tress MacNeille as her. That way nobody could say they had anyone else playing Lunchlady Doris even though Dora is essentially the same character in all but voice and name. But now with Russi Taylor's roles, I guess they just gave up.

sum CLINT the Simpson’s have actually got better and become more innovative since season 10 with better animation lots of guest stars and more outlandish and mellowed storyline’s and characters and of course Jerkass Homer who is way better than Classic Homer even the opening sequences and couch gags are way better too,the first nine seasons were too dark and emotional glad the show changed and moved with the times for the better.

I noticed recently that the death of Phil Hartman was when the Simpsons became dependent on more celebrity voices. E.g. something happens to Bart which the rest of the family doesn't understand; luckily, there's someone who has a video tape about the subject; [insert celebrity here] talks about it. Usually Troy McClure would be the obvious choice
