Debatable about the s10 thing, s10 did plummet to rock bottom. I consider the Golden Era to be s3-7 (s1-2 had their own charms), the cracks appeared s8 and s9 as the more wacky and "quick lazy joke over character and plot" mentality seeped in... but for a post that more reflects Phil Hartman's input into the series and what once made it so great, yeah, I can go with that.
@mattmcmanus36935 жыл бұрын
Pj Gathergood yeah the show certainly plummeted when Phil passed away ratings became low and the show has never properly recovered,seasons 8 and 9 had a classic feel to them there was no Jerkass Homer back then was there? Again I could be wrong but didn’t Jerkass Homer begin in season 10? Also seasons 1 and 2 would have had to have been part of the golden era too I would have thought? Sure they were in its infancy back then but they laid the ground work for what was to come it was emotional raw and the storyline’s and characters were very serious back then,also speaking of early seasons Homer sounds different more like Walter Matthau which episode does he change to his current fairy voice?

Absolutely, maybe I don't have the originality to think outside his suggestion but I can't think of anyone better. Kind of an interesting thought experiment to imagine how Billy West could have continued to portray the character (or at least a similar character) seeing as Zapp Brannigan is West doing an impression of Hartman. Hello, I'm P.J. Gathergood, you may remember me from such lengthy video comments such as "Season One - Let's Go Through In In Real Time", and "For God's Sake it Was a 60 Second Review, You Don't Need To Write A Whole Goddamned Essay!". Great review on a great (and greatly missed) character, Jims. I think much of the reason why Troy McClure worked so well was that he was (by sad fate of real life) limited to appearing in the Golden Era (and just beyond), and as such was in the time when the writers still knew how to use a character "responsibly" and sparingly. He was used for a gag or a scene when needed, he wasn't shoehorned into needless extended "It'll be funny and unexpected to use him here" scenarios as they've done with some other formerly great characters post-Golden Age (As I like to term it, "Ralph Wiggum Syndrome"), which only serves to water down and even spoil or belittle a character. On a similar theme, I have to say I've never much cared for "A Fish Called Selma". I don't hate it, not by a long shot, but a rare s7 episode that doesn't rank all that highly with me. Maybe it reflects that, whilst it's fun to see more of him, a character like McClure does work best in more compact, tightly constructed little cameos. ...Or maybe it was just simply an episode I didn't like as much. Much kudos too has to go to Phil Hartman's voice acting. As you also touch upon Jims, the character was more about Hartman himself than the writers. I think in any lesser hands, McClure would have quickly become a rather 2D and one-joke character (or as I like to term it, "Disco Stu Syndrome"... I'm joking, ish), and soon run out of steam. It was Hartman's talent and enthusiasm that really made McClure such a notable character. I wonder what inspiration lay behind McClure's creation - yes I know he's partly based on Troy Donahue and Doug McClure (hence the name), but I've always felt there's more mixed in with that. He's a fun pastiche of the washed-up-actor still taking any job going, and who still rates themselves far greater than they actually are, not admitting their glory days are long since passed. In a way, considering how the whole retro film/TV convention thing - where many of those washed-up-but-still-adamant-they're-the-greatest actors can be found - has really exploded in the last 20 years, maybe the series was slightly ahead of it's time in nailing this sort of character. I always thought there was a certain homage to William Shatner in there, a spoof of that perceived arrogance, disregard for others, and belief he is the greatest thing of all time (but done with a total love for that). With that in mind, it is interesting to note that Zapp Brannigan in 'Futurama', who is very much a exaggerated spoof of Kirk/Shatner (and a character which has a number of parallels with McClure), was originally written to be voiced by Phil Hartman, until Hartman died before production and Billy West instead voiced the character. In fact, I was a little surprised you didn't mention Zapp Brannigan in this video, Jims... Maybe you'll save it for those eventual Futurama videos... hint hint!! Who would I like to see done next? Well eventually, Mr. Burns, but that would be a "big" video and could maybe be saved for a special occasion. For now, I'd vote (and I actually thought you'd already done him till I checked), Ralph Wiggum, from his origins right through to the "lazily overused formerly great character" Ralph Wiggum. Or maybe Gil, even though he is pretty much post-Golden Era, but still an interesting character. I was also amused to be reminded that Troy McClure's first appearance was in s2's '"Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment' which was the second 'Simspons' episode I ever got to see (the first being 'Stark Raving Dad'), loooong before the series was ever shown properly here in the U.K. ... And an awesome episode screaming out for a review, Jims. ;)

My favourite appearances of Troy McClure are Lisa's Wedding, The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular and A Fish Called Selma. They are all hilarious, especially the 138th Episode Spectacular.

Actually we don’t, there is still no official statement, I fact he’s appeared in the all of the most recent episodes, I’ll be it in a non speaking role, but it contradicts what was said by the random guy who was trying to pitch a script, who was mistakenly said to be the producer.

The Simpsons creators even thought of doing a Live-action spin-off about Troy McClure.

This episode gets a partial credit! Nah just kidding. I love your content. The Simpsons have been a huge influence in my life so your channel is perfect. Thanks heaps.

I noticed recently that the death of Phil Hartman was when the Simpsons became dependent on more celebrity voices. E.g. something happens to Bart which the rest of the family doesn't understand; luckily, there's someone who has a video tape about the subject; [insert celebrity here] talks about it. Usually Troy McClure would be the obvious choice
