the reason why the epirus roster is similar to macedon is because of Pyrhus (the guy that gave "phyric victories" the name) He was a king in Epirus but because of civil war he had to flee to ptolemaic egypt and was introduced to the Alexandrian way of figthing. After some years in Egypt he returned and took back Epirus

I believe how the elephants died that quickly was elephants are terrible against spears I believe the announcer even acknowledges this fact if you have him on during battles so it was due to your units being in phalanx formation, the archers helped with the moral decrease, But evidently, the AI charged elephants into spears which is a huge mistake

apparently the Ai sometimes kills off its elephants when they go berserk but im not always sure

When elephants go berserk the ai automatically chooses to kill them.

Also that elephant charge boggled my brain but it was definitely the missile shots from the cav and archers that lowered their hit points to the point that a few Greek men with spears could easily kill them.

@@philipphelan8712 nope it's Spears elephants are very weak against phalanx it's literally suicide to charge elephants into phalanx unit

gotta up difficulty, its just so hard to increase with all the secession loyalty mechanics. any modes that remove that. destroyed so many epics saves.

I don’t know if you ever figured this out but you actually get a charge *bonus* if you’re in phalanx with hoplites. You want to constantly charge and push your enemy while *in* phalanx formation

I know I'm late to this, but is this true? double clicking from phalanx formations give large bonuses? does that work for pikes as well?

@@PedroAce yes, it does for phalanx due to the way CA coded some beta arena features and DeI changed the abilities from the vanilla game to those beta features. It does not work the same for pikes with the exception of “short” pikes like the Macedonian Agema. However it’s still worth it to order pikes on occasion to attack while in combat since the AI tends to bug out and not advance into a kill zone while in formation.

Elephants are just terrible in Rome 2 and DeI can only do so much. Their mass needs to be like 3x what they are. That being said, Spartan phalanx is no joke xD

Isn't it kind of realistic to history ? I think historians now say that really war elephants were far more a psychological tool to shock the enemy than a practical fighting unit. That's said - they can be very effective in total war battles if the enemy is blobbed up and you charge the elephants in the rear or flanks. You can very easily get the enemy wavering and quickly kill hundreds if used in this manner. And of course they can crush cavalry.

If I know I'm going up against elephants, I make sure to get extra javelin troops. They shred elephants. I get everyone who can throw javelins to focus on the elephants and usually they die before they can do too much damage

Ideally you'd have conquered Taras than sell it to 1 of Rome's powerful rivals to get Rome to fight them rather than you. Carthage is the obvious choice but Rome and Carthage already have plenty to fight over so a different power that ordinarily won't get into a war with Rome early on, would be better.
