Fantastic interview ! You really see that he's leaning in into his vulnerabilities, like he said. Almost felt like a session at the therapist, but shared to the whole world to see. I haven't seen Kim's convenience, before, but hearing him speak about it with such love but also heartbreak, and also talk about his drive about making Asian people proud of themselves, or at least make them feel like they belong, makes me feel that much proud of him for all the way he's gone through. Way to go Simu ! You're on your path for great things, and we'll all be following you closely !

One of the few actors I enjoy seeing interviewed. And this was a great one. Great interviewer and really thoughtful, open responses. Loved it. Simu deserves all the success coming his way. And the way he talked about representation was so spot on. It's how I felt when Black Panther came out. And I hope that Marvel expands the storylines they had planned for him, now that they see how much fans love the character.

I am sick and tired of people asking about asian parents, thats stereotypical on its own. I mean we get it. But lets just for once focus on the wonderful asian actors without getting their parents involved, thats their privacy. You wouldn't ask Robert Deniro parents what they think of his work, now do you? Sheesh...
@kiroolioneaver85323 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this is one of the cases (like people coming out) that once the idea of having an Asian lead is no longer an anomaly or that unique it will stop being that much of an issue. The fact is, aside from discrimination and the systemic barriers that Asian actors/actresses face one of the reasons why there are so few Asian actors (I mean Simu, a Chinese-Canadian, played a Korean on Kim's Convenience) is because a lot of immigrant kids (not just Asian, but perhaps most notably so) are sometimes dissuaded by their parents from pursuing traditionally "non-academic" fields like acting (at least without the "stable" backup). Simu's success is a testament to both the kids and parents in similar experiences to let themselves pursue those paths because the whole world benefits. Do we really need more accountants lol? If Simu was still working at his firm, his parents might've been proud, but he would've been unhappy and the world wouldn't be able to celebrate and see his talents. That's why, as perhaps annoying as it is, it's still important.
@jameswarren17283 жыл бұрын
I agree. I am more interested in his story as an actor
@BingDwenDwen3 жыл бұрын
@@kiroolioneaver8532 Any parents would be proud if their kid turn out to be a genius doctor, lawyer or accountant, thats not only asian parents. Even Barack Obama parents probably are proud of him choosing to be a lawyer. But the only difference might be is that other parents don't get worked up so much about it than asian parents. Either way, its nothing to put your focus on, when the interview is about his movie, diversity and representation and acting as a whole, these are more interesting topics.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? I'm Canadian and have listened to q on and off through out the years. To me this sounds like a very typical CBC radio interview. Understated, maybe slower paced, and it can come off as sounding dry. An American equivalent might be NPR. Like your typical public radio type sound. I enjoyed the interview btw, but again because I've heard this style. It's quite the opposite of a typical "Hollywood" type interview Imo. Just interested in finding out what kind of interview style you like :)
@BaconNDCheese3 жыл бұрын
@@redgillis3 Im from the states. I’m not a stranger to slower paced interviews. I listen to Joe Rogan a lot and his interviews are usually fairly slowly paced. They spend a lot of time on single topics. However, this one didn’t have that…. Idk what to call it…. Chemistry maybe. If I listened to this while driving it would be a lot smoother but seeing the interaction on video, it had some awkwardness to it.

@@redgillis3 thats not to say that Simu was bad. His answers to all the questions were really well put together. Being an asian american and my parents being first generation immigrant parents. The whole idea of “keep your head down” really hit home.
