This video shows a series of rendered animations of snakes with different frictional properties and locomotion gaits. The first segment demonstrates the importance of anisotropic friction for lateral undulation, which turns out not to be as important for concertina progression or sidewinding. The work was part of a series of simulations to inform the control algorithms for Gavin Miller's experimental snake robots.
