Radioactive decay is a random phenomena, meaning that the decay of an individual nucleus is unpredictable.
In this video I demonstrate a simple experiment to simulate decay, using dice. Each die represents an individual nucleus. Each time the dice are shaken any 6s represent nuclei that have decayed, whereas other numbers represent nuclei that are yet to decay.
In this way, we can simulate the change in number of nuclei (and activity) over time, leading to a better understanding of radioactive half-life.

How can they predict half life decay then?

Just look at the number of throws it takes for the number of dice to halve to 40. Starting with 80 dice was deliberate: It's an easy number both to plot on a graph and to halve repeatedly.

Since you said there is always a small chance that some nuclei won't decay, is that the same as all nuclei decaying the first time since it's possible to roll all sixes with your 80 dice

How does scientific community know that radioactive decay is random, as opposed to being predictable, just that the variables necessary to model the outcome has not yet been discovered, or technology does not exist. Shouldn’t the conclusion be: we are unable to accurately model radioactive decay cf. radioactive decay is random.

The aim is to show how the activity of a radioactive material decreases with time, which is all to do with radioactive half-life.

@@QuantumBoffin but how did u proved by rolling dice
@QuantumBoffin
@QuantumBoffin 3 жыл бұрын
Unstable nuclei decay randomly, like the shake of dice. Every time I rolled a 6, I treated it as though that nucleus (the dice) had decayed. As a result, the number of undecayed denuclearisation (dice) got less over time.
