Paul released back-to-back international music albums, Graceland (African music) and Rhythm Of The Saints (South American music), and they are both MASTERPIECES! He recorded them in the countries represented by the music and they both contain many guest artists from the areas represented in the albums. This is a song from Rhythm Of The Saints. The group backing him up is called Grupo Cultural Olodum, and they are fantastic! I suggest checking both of these albums out...they represent Paul Simon at his very best.

Like so many of his songs, "Obvious Child" is about a man going through a midlife crisis, Paul Simon paints the all too familiar picture of a guy in his forties who wonders what he has got to show for it. But the lyrics also have some word play as the main line can be read two ways. 1. Why deny the obvious child? 2. Why deny the obvious, child? Adding the comma makes all the difference into what this line means.

My late husband and I used to play this song for our infant daughter...we would take turns putting her on our shoulders and then we’d bop around to the song (in front of a big mirror so she could see herself). She always got a kick out of it. The WHOLE album is this kind of incredible quality ❤️

Lordy ! Where to even start ! These drummers are Grupo Cultural Olodum, from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. I met them about 2 years before this, and in fact about 8 of them stayed at the house I shared with others. We were all percussionists, and they came over to play a short tour and to teach us about their rhythms and the culture they come from. They taught us all samba reggae, so we learned all these breaks you hear in this song. Recordings cannot convey their sheer power ! You FEEL those bass drums (surdos) through your feet and in the pit of your stomach. They were incredible ! That little bit of Africa you heard was capoeira, the Brazilian dance/martial art form. They taught us that Bahia province in Northern Brazil has always been the most African part of the country , and for a while was even an independent kingdom of African people who managed to free themselves from slavery. It was a privilege to meet them and experience all that they gave us. Over the next couple of years they didn't just play with Paul Simon, but Jimmy Cliff and Michael Jackson as well.

well you know that Brazil has both Portuguese and African musical influences. So when you thought of African music you weren't half wrong. You were probably thinking about his album Graceland which was recorded in Africa. I'm amazed how Paul started with American folk music with Art Garfunkel and then moved on to Caribbean and then African and Brazilian music. Like a new world music is emerging.

My Sweet Angel K.S.O., I've done a little reading ond some research of lyrics and one comment says that the song is about getting old and facing the inevitability of death. I do agree that the song does have that sense the difficulties of aging and that knowledge that things don't last forever. The phrase, 'The cross is in the ballpark" as Paul explained in an interview that it means that through our time we have burden we have to carry, but we are able to overcome these obstacles that get in the way. I do remember the song and the video and yes, it is Brazil where it was filmed. The percussionist here are from a group called, "Grupo Cultural Oludum." They play a cross between samba and reggae type of beat. The group was practicing in the Brazilian city of Salvador at Pelourinho Square and they were recorded using a couple of 8 track tapes. The video does have a bit of a meaning when I saw the graffiti. There is a lot of injustice in the world and I pray that one day it will end. I will be putting this into my playlist. Have a blessed day.

I remember a fascinating exchange about the line "the cross is in the ballpark" when Paul was interviewed by Bob Costas when Costas was hosting the "Later" program. Paul said that when he first wrote it he thought of it literally, like when the Pope goes to America and holds mass at a baseball park. Costas (whose major background is as a sports broadcaster) said that when he first heard it he thought of a kid who was such a baseball fan that his faith was completely in the game, as if he worshipped at the monuments in Yankee Stadium. Paul (also a baseball fan. Remember, one of his best-known lines is "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio") said he liked that interpretation. Then he said that he now thought of the phrase more metaphorically, that the cross was something attainable, within reach, that is "in the ballpark." That last was how I thought of it when I first heard it (see my own comment elsewhere on this thread), but I always remembered that conversation. A great example of how even the author of a lyric doesn't necessarily decide what it means. It's up to whoever hears it.

This is one of my favorite Paul Simon songs. I love how he can make the passage from carefree youth ("these songs are true/these days are ours/these tears are free") to pensive middle-age in just a few lines (something I especially identify with as I contemplate my own cage-like rooms and thinning brown hair 🤔). And I love the line "The cross is in the ballpark," even though I'm not 100% sure what it means. "In the ballpark" is American slang referring to something that, while it isn't exactly what you want or immediately at hand, it is at least near enough, not out of reach. So whatever "the cross" is (your necessary burden? Your faith?) you can still get to it. And since he says "the cross is in the ballpark" in both the first, youthful verse, and the closing middle-aged one, he's saying it shouldn't be abandoned, even if you feel yourself growing older.

KSO, seeing you tackle your very first Paul Simon solo song was an early birthday present for me! You asked about lyrics? Here's a useful note. Paul himself doesn't always assign a specific meaning, which makes his lyrics further amazing. Obvious Child is a great example. Paul says "The cross is in the ballpark" can mean 2 entirely different things... and he hardly cares which one we embrace. #1, it may mean that faith/religion is in the vicinity ("in the ballpark") of providing an answer to caring for children. #2, it may literally reflect when the Pope visited Yankee Stadium in the 1980s. As a baseball fan, Paul simply found it a strange dichotomy to have such a somber individual on a baseball field.

The whole Rhythm of the Saints album is laced with themes of spiritually and search for meaning and understanding, so while this song always seems to me to be primarily about the struggle of midlife, the lines "some people say, a lie is just a lie, but I say, the cross is in the ballpark. Why deny the obvious child" always seemed to me to be a reference to faith in general, hinting at Jesus as the obvious child. Implying that there's no need to throw this out. It has it's place in humanity's path through life. It's not important to him if it's absolutely true - the cross is in the ballpark.

Forgive if I misinterpret this song. But this song is dual-edged. It not only does it condemn horrific living situations the folks in Brazil have endured, it also tells the story of the people who lived thru it and survived, reflecting back on things and people they've lost, but is also optimisticly looking forward and saying there is a way out, a better way. How better to say that by telling the story from the point of view of someone who lived it over the years. Bravo to Paul Simon for giving us this gift.

I remember when this piece came out. Some people asked the African performers how could they let Paul Simon take advantage of them. Some of the African performers pointed out that you could look at it from the other point of view that they gained from performing with Paul Simon. My opinion is that it was a win-win.

I agree with your interpretation and I also would like to add that I think Paul is also pointing out that there is a God ," cross in the ball park", who died on the cross for our sins and rose again. I think Paul also is pointing out that we are all children of God and I believe the "ball park" verse also is referring to us around the world rejoicing in the love that God has for us and we should love one another. Therefore we should care for one another
