It’s actually Brazilian drumming and percussion. Edited to add: The Album is “The Rhythm of the Saints”

That whole record is such a gem, at least as good as Graceland in my humble opinion.

I saw the video before hearing the song by itself, and always vibe to the image of the Brazilian folks playing and dancing to the drums.

Asia and BJ, you'll love Paul's "Loves Me Like A Rock", "Late In The Evening" and "Kodachrome"!!! Fun Fact: Paul Simon won the Grammy for Album of the Year 1975. In accepting he said "I'd like to thank Stevie Wonder for not releasing an album this year". Stevie had won for 1973 and 1974. His nickname was 'rhymin' Simon'.

Agree with you guys…sound balance was off, drums kind of drowned out the rest. Remastered does not always mean improved I guess. The official music video was shot in Salvador, BR and it is visually engaging and the sound balance is better. There is a huge catalog of Paul Simon music to explore.

The Rythmn of the Saints is my favourite PS album, followed by Gracelands. It's those drums!! 😲

It’s South American. Paul loved experimenting with different sounds around the world. I actually love this song, but it does sound a little different probably because the remastering like you were saying, however, the first time I ever heard the song was a live version on the Paul Simon live in Central Park album and I actually think that the live version sounds better than the recorded version

Check out the live versions of this song from the early 90s. I saw him back then, and there were SO MANY drummers/percussionists with him. So energetic!

Are you watching the video? It will make more sense., He's surrounded by a bunch of colorful drummers in a poor section of town. Kids in the windows, people watching the filming. Why no Angelina video? Already 4 weeks! You will love her first single!

Definitely sounded like the drums were boosted in the mix over what I remember - not sure why.

Agreed. Drumming is too loud, doesn’t suit a voice like Simon’s. It’s like trying to hear him in a crowded bar.

Oh, you REALLY needed to see the video for this one as all the visual impact of the drummers is lost. What a shame.

I've tried, but Paul Simon has just always gotten under my skin & bored me to pieces. I appreciate his appreciation of African music, but when his little cutesy lyrics & vocals come in I can only think about yuppie parties I crashed as a 20 something where they all were so f--king lame and were playing Paul Simon & drinking white wine. It's something the cast of the Big Chill would like if the movie had come out a few years later. Yawn. But cheers to the musicians who played on it. Meanwhile, I do appreciate Simon & Garfunkel a bit more, infinitely more interesting. This is what elitists listened to in the 80s.
