This was their first hit single from 1964...back at the very beginning for them. This is the original four members (Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, Keith Moon) who remained the group until Keith's death in 1978.

They almost didn't make it out of the 60s. They were so much in debt, and part of that was because of smashing their instruments on stage. They put all of their eggs making the album Tommy. The album, as you know, is one of the best albums ever by a rock group.

From the mid to late '60s The Who was mostly known as a singles band, then they came out with the double album "Tommy" which changed that. They had a string of great hits: Happy Jack, I Can See for Miles, Pictures of Lily, The Seeker, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, A Legal Matter, The Magic Bus, Substitute. They were on a par with the Rolling Stones and The Kinks.

That dance your were asking about is called the Swim and it was popular in the early to mid-1960s. Other dances from that era include the Monkey, the Jerk, the Pony, the Watusi, and the Frug, all sort of launched into popularity in the wake of the first no-steps, non-touch, non-partner dance, the Twist, at the end of the 1950s and early 1960s.

This song was inspired, in part, by the Kinks' song, 'You Really Got Me'. The Kinks had a huge hit, & the Who wanted one, too, & basically wrote a song that sounded pretty much the same. Both were produced by the same person - an American ex-patriot who was living in London named Shel Talmy, who went on to discover David Bowie, Cat Stevens, & the Easybeats.

The footage is from two separate performances. The one were Roger Daltrey is wearing a tweed jacket is from 1965 and they are actually doing a cover of 'Heat Wave.' The one were he is wearing sunglasses is from 1964 and they are doing (amongst others) a cover of 'I gotta dance to keep from crying.' They were then known as The High Numbers. The 1964 footage was shot by their manager Kit Lambert at the Railway Arms Hotel London, a well known haunt of Mods. Some of the dancers have obviously taken amphetamines, known to the Mods as purple hearts as their main source of supply was American servicemen. Try 'The Kids are all Right' 1965 they are by then no longer a covers band and truly are The Who, especially Moonie.

The music term you're grasping for at 3:40 is Rhythm & Blues. In fact, one of the Who's early catch phrases for themselves was "Maximum R&B", before they began going quasi-psychedelic. This song is from their rough & ready Mods vs. Rockers days, when they were writing the book on English rock with bands like the Kinks and the Animals. They would revisit this period many years later in Pete's second rock opera "Quadrophenia".

Ah the 'Mods' (Modernists) - a cultural movement largely based around London and the south east. The Who were one of the primary groups associated with the Mod movement in the 60s. Way back in those early days of filming rock bands, syncing was a chance to montage and avoid the lack of continuity between sight and sound. In this Who video montage [and many others of the era], you see an emotionless Keith Moon waving sticks instead of the drum, Jon Etlewise not really playing bass but staring into space, and Pete Townsend flipping the bird because he knew the sensors would think he was just playing the guitar.

A Young Jimmy Page, (before his Led Zeppelin days) is said to have played on this record as a session musician. There is some dispute about whether his contribution made it to the final edit. Apparently Pete Townsend got very angry when Page mentioned playing on this. Page isn't the only one who mentioned it. There was a session drummer called Bobby Graham who mentioned it in an interview.

Welcome to early/mid-60s British mod culture! That would be a typical small suburban club, probably in a room above a pub or in a basement somewhere in Greater London, where the Who were from. The whole 60s music scene was just getting started, with centres developing especially in London (the Who, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones) and the North of England where the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Animals, and many other bands came from... I don't know the name of that music style and dance; it's possible it was borrowed from some American dance of the same era. Most of the young hip bands (called groups then) and their followers were huge admirers of American music, especially that of African Americans, such as Motown and Blues, Rhythm and Blues, etc. They got hold of any records they could find, listening with rapt attention, then translating it as best they could it into their own language, something relevant to a restless generation of originally mostly working-class young people growing up in still war-ravaged towns and cities across Britain. Of course once the Beatles gained national exposure and Number 1 hits all these young men from these often unpromising backgrounds became the darlings of society, attracting everyone from artists to the aristocracy... All the same people in the band, just younger versions of themselves... :-)
