The Who guitarist Pete Townshend wrote this song when he was 18 years old. He described it as being about a guy who "can't tell his girlfriend he loves her because he's taken too many Dexedrine tablets." Dexedrine is an amphetamine, which explains why the guy is "dizzy in the head" and "hot and cold." It's not just love that he's feeling. This was the first single from The Who, which had recently changed their name from The High Numbers. It was one of the first original songs The Who performed; they played mostly covers of American R&B songs to that point. This song is about what it is like to be young and unable to express your feelings. The guy in the song can't find a way to tell his girlfriend he loves her. Roger Daltrey told Uncut magazine: "Well, it's that thing - 'I got a feeling inside, I can't explain' - it's rock'n'roll. The more we try to explain it, the more we crawl up our own arses and disappear! I was very proud of that record. That was us, y'know - it was an original song by Pete and it captured that energy and that testosterone that we had in those days." (Songfacts.com)

This is from their "mod" days. Mods were a 1960s teen movement in the UK. If you get a chance, watch the film Quadrophenia. It not only explains this era but also has Sting in it in one of his first acting roles. The Who develped from a pop band into one of the great rock bands of all time.

GREAT SONG ! How Lex isn't bopping around is confusing. Back in the day there was a device called a radio and most songs weren't played if they were not between 2:15 - 3:00 minutes long. Soooo, a lot of energy had to be packed into such a short time interval. The songs had to grab you from the start. I miss those days. 😢🙃💖

Don't forget the time contraints of the Juke Box also. A record did not even get into the box if it was too long. The operators wanted short plays to keep their money stream going. Hence the short endings to 'Substitute' and 'My Generation'. and hoards of other songs by other groups. Lucky for us the Who had the talents to move on to better things.

For Substitute to be released in America, they had to rewrite the line: "I look all White but my dad was Black" because the very suggestion of interracial relationships was considered unpalatable back then, even in a song.

This was the first The Who song that was written by guitarist Pete Townshend around 1965... The Who were an R&B cover band at that point doing gigs in London. They heard the music of The Kinks and Townshend decided to try write a song in their style and "I can't explain" was the result... it did pretty well as a single in Britain, so Townshend started to write more songs. 'My generation' single came months later and blew the doors open for The Who... by 1967, it was hit in the US.

("Who Are You", by contrast is 1978, right before Keith Moon overdoses.) And the funniest thing has to be those 1965-era clubgoers trying to get down. No wonder they all ended up on drugs, lol.

Musically as a Rock song it is very powerful! As a three piece band and a solid singer, the song sounds full. The early studio mixes were a little light on the mix. So it is easy for me to see someone who is not from the period of the original rock explosion to grasp the moment. One needs to remember that much of the music we heard on the radio at this point in time was on a "Transistor Radio" that had a 9 volt battery and a 1 1/2 inch speaker and TV was still B & W. Grandma was listening to Lawrence Welk and Andy Williams. Lol. It would be fantastic to hear a modern remix. Substitute, and Boris the Spider, are a couple of my favorite early Who songs.

Regarding the background vocals, the story is that isn't even the Who singing. Their manager? producer? someone didn't have enough confidence that Pete and/or John wasn't up to the task and brought in some little group for the harmonies. And at that time the Who really didn't have much to fight back with. Subsequently, John and Pete have consistently shown they can sing lead or harmony, whatever is needed.

The backing vocals were by the Ivy League, a three man harmony group. They were soon to have their own hit single with Funny How Love Can Be.
