Sincerity in seeking knowledge. (An advice)

This reminded me of an occasion in which Hassan al-Basri رحمه الله said the following: He - may Allah be merciful to him- used to say: 'O son of Adam! Do not do any righteous deed only to be seen by people, and do not leave any righteous deed out of shyness.' It is said that he gave a sermon one day; a man took a deep sigh. He asked the man: 'O my nephew! Why did you do that? If you were sincere, you have drawn attention to yourself, and if you were insincere, you have ruined it. People used to supplicate diligently without their voice being heard. One who lived before you would fully recite the Qur'an without his neighbour hearing his voice, while the other would learn to obtain understanding in the religion without his friend knowing about it. One of them was told, I admire your lack of restlessness in your prayer and your humble submission therein.' He replied: 'O my nephew, and how would you know where my heart was?" He used to say: "The show-off one wants to overcome Allah's fate for him. He is, in the sight of Allah, wicked and loathed, and He reveals that to His believing servants. The show-off wants to show people, 'I am pious', and how could he when Allah's knowledge of his showing off is instilled in the hearts of His servants. -The beacon of Basra, p. 92-93

peace and Allah's blessings be upon you o brother in islam. thank you for this important reminder. may it be of benefit to all the muslims. by Allah, there is no ihklas, without Fear of Allah ﷻ. and along with that being upon tawheed to the utmost of our abilities. If one wants to see how sincere they are, we should evaluate the degree and consistency of Fear for Allah .
