Thanks, as a music lover, wanna-be I always enjoy knowing about such classic ballads- is it a ballads? Not sure exactly how to define that word- anyhow, just listened to Lady Day and Marianne Faithfull, wasn't sure how this song would suit Sinead who I love also- bad taste, "jokes" aside, poor Sinead has taken a sht kicking, but so did Billie and Marianne got vilified way back, unfairly, England's loss- I must say I quite like her cover and will buy the album, haven't bought a Sinead for ages...thanks again for the info, do you have a fav version- I don't find the song depressing and yes, I have tried...3x, thankfully I didn't succeed but I still have as the shrinks say "the ideation" Namaste. I wouldn't say, like it seems so many have, that this song is "depressing". I think the music is very beautiful and as far as the text is concerned, I have heard only what Sinead sings here so I'm not able to comment correctly about it yet, but I suspect that the text reflects what pains the writer is experiencing as precisely and poetically as he can describe anything else in utter heartbreak, I.e., with aching soul and the mortal heart of his love which beats to its end, stabbed and dying. This is the first performance of the song I've heard and I know already that it is one of the best. The comments attest to this but even if there were none, it is still possible for one to feel the heartbreak. Sinead delivers the pathos, utter sadness and despair by almost whispering it to us implying this feeling as so deep and so very personal, an epiphany to the writer of how sad he could ever find himself, laying bare his heart and the depth he had loved and the profundity of how invested he allowed himself, telling us in the intimacy of a secret whispered to a trusted friend and revealing to himself too, much more than he cares to admit. These are the harsh lessons of love and the broken heart 💔

So many artists sing it that way now thanks to the Billie Holiday version, like that's the definitive version. She sang it beautifully, but added that damn ending. The whole point was that "death is no dream" - you can't have a happy ending saying it was just a dream, you just contradicted the lyrics! So dumb. Like you said, it spits on the artist's original message and intent. Emilie Autumn purposely sang it the way it should be, as a sad suicide song with a sad ending - no added happy verse. She also references it in her song The Art of Suicide, saying: Life is not like Gloomy Sunday With a second ending where the people are disturbed Well, they should be disturbed Because there's a story that ought to be heard Life is not like Gloomy Sunday With a second ending where the people are disturbed Well, they should be disturbed Because there's a lesson that really ought to be learned And yes, the added verse was because it was deemed too sad and touchy of a subject for radio (it was banned), so they added the last verse so it would be okay to play on public radio since it was now just a dream.
