I saw her live twice. At the Beacon in New York, and the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey, near where I grew up. (That was the infamous National Anthem concert, and absolutely nobody noticed they didn't play it over the sound system--just a weird rule, because it was state-run then, and you know how she felt about rules). Her voice just cut through all the noise, like nothing I've ever heard, before or since. I mean, I saw Van Morrison at the Beacon, Lou Reed, Teena Marie, The Pogues (Post McGowan, alas). Obviously Van Morrison was past his prime, but still--she was--something else. Something else entirely. I can't explain it. There was a force in her. It was more than just a good instrument. It was the spirit behind the instrument. The ferocity of it. I'm not surprised she died relatively young. Or that no explanation has been found. That kind of fire can only burn so long. And she turned the flame down.

I knew this song was about her mother, just by the emotion in her voice. I give her so much credit for just being able to sing about something so painful in front of thousands of people. She was an amazing artist who wore her heart on her sleeve. I was so sad when I heard she had passed away, but not surprised at all. Between her on going depression which I am sure was magnified when her young son took his life 18 mos ago, it was not a big suprise to many. She often said he was the closest to her, and she felt he was the only person to ever love her unconditionally. I'm sure when the results of what ever it was that caused her death are made public although tragic they will confirm what many are thinking. The pain was much too hard for her to go on. She left behind many who did in fact love her unconditionally and will remember her with great respect, love and admiration for the exceptional talented musician and artist she was. She had a voice that often gave you chills, beautiful eyes that mystified you, and a smile that more than often hid the pain and insecurities she often dealt with. I pray to God, even though I didn't personally know her, that she finally is at peace, and with her baby boy. So unbelievably sad, she is already missed more than she will ever know, and for a lot of us, she'll always be remembered for the amazing woman she didn't believe or know she was. ❤

She was just 20 when that record came out. Such brilliant singing and songwriting. It was great for her to have a big hit with that Prince song, but I always felt like it caused her own talents to be overlooked. Mandinka is a great rock song (especially when the Smiths dude isn’t screwing up the drum part in the chorus) but Troy, holy shit.

Sinéad was a powerhouse of talent. Especially on Troy. Just her singing and a guitar. No 50 backup dancers, elaborate costumes and sets, no autotune, flashing lights or smoke and she still blows away most performers even today. Even through the video her performance just grabs you; I can't imagine what it was like seeing her live. It was disgusting the way she was vilified and crucified for standing up against the corrupt, pedophilic catholic church.

Not just lovelorn songs.. this one was about being sexually abused when she was young. So much of her art and voice was speaking out against child sexual abuse and abuse and equality and justice more broadly. It's about two people who caused her alot of pain. Her abusive mother who locked all of the children out of the house one rainy night and let them sleep in a shed. @@fazsicle No, it's not beside the point. Especially if it led to her ultimately abandoning her religion. It's very relevant and there's nothing rude about commentating about such a serious topic that affects the lives of so many people. It has nothing to do with not being able to focus on Sinéad, her music, or her influence. Those things are beside *my* point. Her pain is reflected artfully in her intense vocals; she still gives me chills just like the first time I heard her in the 80's.

Everyone bangs on about Nothing Compares To You written by Prince and while it's good, I always though these songs were better which she wrote herself

I've just noticed in all these videos it's a white baby's onesie tucked into her jeans at the back... It must have been to acknowledge/keep her son close while she performed! ❤ 😪

I just found this reference to it: "Despite her reverence for the occasion, however, O’Connor used her Grammys platform for some pointed social commentary and critique. She tied the arms of a baby’s onesie, worn by her then-young son Jake, onto the belt loops of her jeans, letting it flap around her waist as she sang. O’Connor later put the onesie on her mother’s grave, intending it as a “souvenir for her from the Grammys.” The writer Allyson McCabe also called the wardrobe choice “a middle finger to the executives at her record label who had warned her that motherhood and a career were incompatible.”"
