That song just stops you dead in your tracks. Imagine starting a rebellion you know you can’t win, and you know they will take your life for doing so, just to make the people of Ireland stand up and fight after your gone. Very powerful. Thank you.

@david gallagher I completely disagree with that comment. In planning it was a serious attempt to overthrow the British government. But days before the Rising they knew they hadn’t got enough weapons. And was short of volunteers. I’m talking about the initial start of the Rising in Dublin. taking the building’s and holding them. They went into those buildings knowing they would probably not be coming out. If that’s not a sacrifice then what is ?. Nothing to do with what happened afterwards. ( blood sacrifice)
@skippership7 Жыл бұрын
@@raybrennan7851 I agree, it was indeed a serious attempt to get "The British Empire" out of Ireland however once the Aud with the arms had been caught by HMS Bluebell and Spindler had scuttled her off the coast of Kerry and Eoin MacNeill then "cancelled manurers" and stood the IV down, it was from that point onwards always going to be a blood sacrifice and Pearse knew that and I suspect most of the IRB knew that as well. You will always hear historians say that the Rising "took the British completely by surprise" but this is of course nonsense. Balfour through the Castle's spies and informers had already informed the British Cabinet that the Rising was going to start on "Easter Monday" (not Easter Sunday) and as FLOA Balfour had already starting assembling troops in Britain to ship into Ireland. The point is that the British Government "Let" the Rising go ahead so they could justify the plot they had hatched in Oct 1915 to assassinate members of the IV and IRB / trouble makers, but called that plot off at the time as it was deemed not viable. So, the Rising starts "what a perfect excuse for the British" and hence why Order 256 was implemented so quickly to make sure these "troublemakers" were "legally executed" (indeed as 79 rebels in total were sentenced to be executed - excluding Casement of course). These debates (if anyone bothers to read them) are all clearly detailed in Hansard HofC papers for May 1916 and Irish MP John Dillon's wonderful verbal mauling of Asquith in his rivers of bloody speech in the HofC. Huge credit should be given to John Dillon for saving so many Rebel lives and getting Asquith to put a stop to Maxwell's blood lust on 11 May 1916, but too late to save Mac Diarmada and Connolly on 12 May as they were both signatories of course. And before you ask about Thomas Kent, yes his execution was illegal as he was charged and from guilty of the wrong crime, as conceded by Asquith in those same debates. Show less

@david gallagher Speaking as the great niece of one of the volunteers who fought in it as a very tall but very young lad, and ended up as one of the volunteers who went on hunger strike in the Curragh, but who ultimately survived and lived until I was in my teens - the aim of what YOUR INTERPRETATION of Connolly's quote was to sound the death knell against Britain (and other's, eg Belgium - the Belgian Congo, for example) HIGHLY UNJUST AND BRUTALLY OPRESSIVE COLONIALIST REGIMES..... *AND IT WORKED!!! WHAT STARTED IN IRELAND LIT THE FUSE THAT LED COUNTLESS OTHER THERETOFORE OPRESSED COLONIES TO FOLLOW QUIT & HEY PRESTO: COLONIALISM WAS DEAD OVER THE COURSE OF THE FOLLOWING FEW DECADES!!* I see you mentioning all of the not that many in comparison various British Agents who were supposedly killed by these few poorly armed volunteers - *but failing to count amongst the dead any of the victims of the Criminally Psychotic Black and Tans, or the millions starved to death in ditches during the famine, while Britain stole and sold for profits every single other crop etc that didn't fail during those years!?!* IF YOU'RE GOING TO START LISTING VICTIMS, HAVE THE DECENCY TO LIST THEM ALL, NOT JUST ONE SIDE'S (THE VASTLY LARGER IN NUMBER AND FAR BETTER EQUIPPED SIDE'S, AT THAT!!!) *I, for one, am very proud of what my Great Uncle and those other men achieved!! We wouldn't have our Republic today without their sacrifice!!*

It's shameful that Canon O'Neill when he wrote the song mentioned "The MEN" of the Rising at least 4 times, but the WOMEN of the Rising = ZERO times. The Chieftains who are the band that this version is by (Sinead was one of a few guest vocalists on The Long Back Veil album, can be put with any singer and they make that singer no matter how good, immeasurably better. Martin, Seán, Matt, Paddy & Derek are some of the best musicians Ireland have produced! If my memory is serving me, the clips in the video you were using are from one of the greatest films every shot: The Wind That Shakes the Barley, its a hard watch, but probably the most historically accurate representation of that period of our history to be put on film.

PS: There are versions of this song by the likes of the great Irish Brigade, Shebeen etc which have a slightly differing line updated somewhat: instead of "But had they died by Pearse's side. Or fought with Cathal Bruagh, Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep 'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew." its "But had they died by Pearse's side, or fought with the Provo's too, Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep 'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew"

My Grandmother was born in Donegal in 1901 and came to America in 1926, so she lived through all of this. She didn’t talk about it often because she didn’t like talking about the past, but she did tell me a little about the Black and Tans. She told me how they would show up at the weekend dances to “inspect” the goings on. Everyone turned their backs on the soldiers and you didn’t dare talk to them. But she did say once that they (the Black and Tans) were just lonely, young men, far from home looking for a girl to talk to on a Saturday night. I know the stories about them are much worse, but that was her memory. She was close to 100 when she said this so, I guess her memories had softened a bit.

So if ur ever in an argument with a Cork man just say "You lot call urselves the rebel county sure u's killed the best rebel there ever was" And trust me they soon shut up😂😂😂 Rite history lesson is over😜👍 If you like Irish music which I take it you do, The best rebel band are the wolf tone's without question and there's a piece of music called Mise Eire it's not a wolf tone song but it's a beautiful peace of music, There's one that's just music and there's one with lyrics... Actually type in on utube "the 100th anniversary of the 1916 rising" and go to the songs on that, it was the 1st time words were put to Mise Eire but not only that you will also get to hear Grace...
