I think she enjoyed these ballads. They're string songs and she was a strong woman. She was never subservient to anyone and had no problem expressing herself. When she stood in Madison Square garden and the crowd bood her you could see the wheels of her mind turning and she strongly recited that speech. What strength. She thrived in the face of adversity. However she was human and internally must have taken a toll on her. So sad her mental health suffered so much. But that's what made Sinead who she was. Sleep in peace in heaven brave Sinead.

A couple of explainers... The Liffey is the river that flows through the centre of Dublin. "Angelus bells" in the Catholic faith are rang everyday at 12pm and 6pm to signal the saying of the Angelus prayer. Catholic churches ring their bells at these times. In 1916 the British forces sailed gunships up the Liffey and pummelled the positions which the rebels had taken. "Britannia's Huns and their long range guns" "Britannia" = old name for Britain. "Huns" = is (in this case) an insult to the British royal family. The English call the Germans Huns as an insult. The British royal family took the name Windsor (this is fact) to sound more English but they are actually of German descent. The Huns were an old Germanic tribe from thousands of years ago, hence the name being levelled at the English monarchs as an insult because it is in itself is an insult the English level at the Germans. It is sort of using their own ammunition against them. So basically, the English call the Germans 'huns' as an insult but because the English royal family are really German, Irish people call the English 'huns' by way of throwing that insult back at them. From the plains of "Royal Meath" strong men came hurrying through = Meath is one of the 32 counties of Ireland. The hill of Tara in county Meath was the ancient seat of the ruling Chieftains of Ireland. Meath, for this reason, is known as the Royal County. And that sir is what is known in Ireland as a 'Rebel song'. We have hundreds of them chronicling our fight against the British Empire and also many songs which reference the civil war the fuxxers left behind them when we eventually got rid of the parasites.

@@moominpicNo naval ships were used. The Helga was a yacht that was converted into a gunboat. It sent some shells into de Valera's position before hitting the Four Courts and the GPO. It was ineffective, though. The real damage was committed by the two eighteen pound artillery pieces set up to shell the city centre garrisons.

@ccahill2322
@ccahill2322 Жыл бұрын
John Derrick, I just wish some people do not get carried away with thinking the English people are, or ever were, represented by the so-called elites who ruthlessly stepped on English working people as well as the Irish. Nor should Irish people readily swallow that what the men of "The Foggy Dew" died for, was not sullied and sold, by some of those who achieved power on the backs of those who died. I once knew, a long time ago, a very fine man from Manchester in a city, which a few years later exploded into the worst kind of sectarian warfare, who said: "the last refuge of a scoundrel is "patriotism." I cried tonight when I listen to that song. But it is for reasons of all the lives lost ( which included a member of my family without whom I would not be here) for nothing gained. Because Ireland today is less "free" and within a more insidious "empire" than the British one. And England, unfortunately for its good people, is in exactly the same situation. Than you for your understanding and generous comment.

🍀🇮🇪🍀 Thanks for reviewing this version too! Awesome job, Texas Love!!! Sinéad O'Connor has an incredible voice, but never fit the mold for female singers. Intense, dark & strong, she's never conformed & her career suffered because of it. Glad you're exploring Irish Music. You picked an excellent place to start! {Just a bit more info for you:The Northern Irish Civil Rghts Movement was in the 1970s, Protestant English government from Britain & civilians versus the "native" Irish Catholics. The movies "Belfast," "71," "Michael Collins," & "In the Name of the Father" give a good historical view of the conflict. Sectarian violence at it's worst} Sláinte!!! ("Cheers" in Gaelic) 🍀🇮🇪🍀

I have the CD “The Chieftains - The Long Black Veil” bought approx. 20 years ago and played many many times. First time I have seen someone do a review on her traditional song. Have a look at some of her Gaelige songs. She was so much more than one Prince song.

How would all those men who were martyred for Irish freedom ,so our children could live and prosper,our brutal enemy having labelled us subhuman, how would those same men feel about 30000 plus defenceless Irish unwanted babies slaughtered in their mother's womb on the altar of sexual liberation in a land of plenty by their own ?

That's a tearjerker performance from Sinéad but you ruined it for me when you mentioned McGregor. Bummer!!😮

My grand father took part in the rising of 1916. fourth battalion from Harolds cross, under Mallin and Markievic at st Stephens green/College of Surgeons. War has a tendency to mess people up. He died an alcoholic and impoverished, though some of that madness may have been because he was disinherited from his wealthy Unionist family. Such rebel songs as this may inspire us to remember the sacrifices made back then, they who lived through it, may have been inspired to try forget their terrible experiences.

Hey, i just wanted to make you aware that Irish names are sometimes extremely hard to pronounce for example my name Níamh is Irish, but it is pronounced Neeve. But because of your amazing reaction to Sínead O'Conner and the Chieftans i thought id just waned to tell you Sínead is pronounced Shssinead. Hope that help, and thanks again, such brilliance. 🍀🍀 🇮🇪🇮🇪
