Thank you for this video. I never understood how it was done before. Thank you for demonstrating the way the sinew was used for sewing.

Very Interesting. I found a cache of Slave Beads here in Charleston, Sc from the 1700s or earlier and I want to put them on a necklace for my video and display and today was the 1st time I ever read about Sinew . I definitely want to use the real stuff to make this necklace. Thanks for the Awesome video.

The ancient ingenuity never seizes to amaze me. If the internet shuts down tomorrow, all books that covers this were to be burned and all people who knows about this dies, I wonder how long it would take for people to rediscover stuff like brain tanning and using sinew as thread.

Ok. So I got some real sinew to make my Slave Bead necklace and I soaked it , like u did and pulled it apart , but its too short to make a necklace. Do I just tie 2 pieces together? To make a bigger necklace..?
@thewanderingbull98432 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes you would tie it together if you need it to be more pliable you can wet the tips.

I have tried Fake sinew and it stretched very easily it was like a stretchy dental floss and it was not good for the type of beadwork I do, I'd like very much to try the real sinew. Thank you for the demonstration

I am making mukluks out of moose hide and using bison outer soul and moose hide inner soul. I am wondering with the real sinew do I just use it without separating it? I am lining them with beaver fur too
@thewanderingbull98432 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching our videos! You would separate the sinew fibers. We have a video on how to do that at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWalY2Zpm9t3e7s.

Do you have to salt the real sinew or somthing, to get rid of the bacteria or so, if ther is any on the sinew. 🤔 Have seen people to chew on it to get it softer 🤔
@thewanderingbull98433 жыл бұрын
We have never used salt before on it and to soften it just put in water. Thanks for watching!

Hello Love your video, I would as can you show how connect sinew to make a long string that will not come apart? I make wampum from quahogs and would like to use real sinew. I do not know how to link them to make longer beading threads. Thank you!
@thewanderingbull98434 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I have not worked much with connecting the pieces together to make one continuous lace. I have just used it in the length I get.

So whats the process? Soak first and then create strands? Or strand first and then soak? Im brand new to this

They never twisted the sinew into longer threads for sewing?
@thewanderingbull98435 жыл бұрын
Hello Thank you for watching our video. Thank you for commenting, this is what I was taught.

No it was pieces laid together wet and rolled to make a continuous thread. Same thing applies to Tula Reed which made into baskets and one of the oldest made boats which is still done on clear lake by the Lakeport Pomo tribe.

What is the best kind of sinew for making a bow?
@thewanderingbull98434 жыл бұрын
The backstrap is the best as it is the longest. Elk or Bison would be longer than deer.

Is using the artificial sinew disrespectful to the creation of the art, feathers, drums, etc? I ask because I attended an event, a circle, and they used artificial or fake, candles and fake flower petals as center decor, and later we passed a burning sage bundle, sage-ing self instead of each other and I was very disappointed and felt it cheapened the experience. It felt white'afied in my words. They meant well, but something was amiss. Thank you.

We feel that artificial sinew does have a purpose in crafting, so it is up to the artist to decide which is best for their craft. Thank you for watching!

What kind of clothing are you looking to wear? Regalia items should not be worn unless you are Native American.
