What do people seem to love as much as singing competitions? How about jukebox musicals? Or maybe movies starring lovable anthropomorphic characters? Well, Illumination has managed to combine all three into one film franchise that can be summed up with one word: Sing. With its sequel just hitting theatres, we decided to break down the characters of both “Sing” and “Sing 2” to see who’s pure and good, and who’s about as pleasant as a sour note.

I just realised that Sing & Sing 2 are pretty dark. Johnny got disowned by his dad. Jimmy tried to kill Buster, TWICE! Jimmy was also emotionally and verbally abusive to Porsha, not caring about her feelings when she got fired and only caring about his reputation.

Sing 1 and 2 are the darker Illumination films. They use more mature themes than other films.

The near lack of dark aspects in their other films is probably my biggest issue with Illumination. They're not the worst studio, they could just be better. It's also why I liked the Sing movies best, since unlike movies like Despicable Me or The Secret Life of Pets, Sing isn't afraid to explore dark aspects.

@@RealSirMikay Yeah, its even crazier when you realized that sing is the most down to earth film Illumination has ever produced. think about it... You have characters like Johnny who lives a life of being part of a criminal gang who turns to singing which is something hes really good at. You have Ash who is trying to be a good girlfriend to her boyfriend Lance who is doing nothing but being a toxic and insufferable prick who never gives her a chance in the first place. (Verbal abuse really and the fact he cheated on her makes it so much worse.) Then you have characters like Rosita who is a mother of 15 or so children who does everything she can to provide for her family while her husband goes to work and essentially misses out on the beautiful job shes doing. Then you have Sing 2 where we get characters like Clay Calloway who is depressed and has cut himself off from the rest of the world for over a decade because of the death of his wife. which is extremely realistic especially for a loving husband. And you also get Porshe who at first seems to be a spoiled brat but in reality, is just someone who is adventurous and brave and willing to do things that she has never done before, despite the fact that her father verbally abuses her in the film and only cares about himself. Then you have characters like Jimmy Crystal who are only there for their pride and they only care about themselves and Jimmy Crystal has shown that he doesn't even care about his own daughter but his reputation instead. You don't see concepts like this in other Illumination films. Sing and Sing 2 are the only ones that have a real sense of reality and life's not all its made out to be. hopefully more films like sing get made by Illumination but you know... its Illumination.

Sing (2016) is more lighthearted but Sing 2 (2021) that’s a dark movie in a lot of ways. For example Johnny’s teacher fighting Johnny in the middle of a circle of fire, Jimmy Crystal trying to almost kill Moon and Clay Calloway’s backstory.

Fun Fact: I realised that Mr Crystal actually made Rosita fly with the ropes when he threw Buster Moon. So he did help on the theater.

But when Rosita saw Buster in danger, she had the courage to save him. Even if Mr. Crystal did made Rosita fly in one way or another, I don't think he actually "help". Keep in mind He wanted to kill Buster no matter how. Also, during that scene when Porsha flies, Jimmy doesn't even notices her. Heck in ONE shot, we see EVERYONE looking at her, except Jimmy.

@@chrisguara that’s true he doesn’t even care about his daughter he’s selfish and careless. She sang like an angel trying something amazing and he didn’t even bother to look at her until she was done with the jump. Before when buster was a little scared to let her do it she said “daddy he won’t let me jump” and it’s so specific they choose that line over anything else. Buster showed more father figure then jimmy ever could. He said “let her do the thing” meaning he doesn’t care about what she’s doing and just wants her out of his hair. If she didn’t have the safety strap on tightly she would have gotten hurt really badly. If that happened I know that jimmy would blame buster. This really shows he doesn’t care for his daughter any other father would tell their daughter to be careful and would watch the whole time to make sure she is safe maybe even record to show her later in years - if he didn’t go to jail and become and terrible person later on. If porsha didn’t tell jimmy about buster “firing” her then he would have been a little nicer towards him and anyone else - seeing as his reputation is still good.

exactly, i think he’s the purest alongside with meena. i mean, even though he had people being mean to him (at first his father then his teacher in the sequel) he has always been kind. the author of the video says that he had tried to steal the money so he ain’t that nice…EXCUSE YOU?!? he only did that for his father who has basically disowned him after discovering what his dream was 😤 the poor kid had no one to guide him but himself and he always did good

Jimmy is definitely one of the most evil recent animated villains to leave an impact on me IMO. As was said, he’s extremely egotistical, self centered, and cruel, but the scene that really drove it home was the scene when he saw his daughter Porsha visibly upset and crying after a misunderstanding about being fired. Instead of comforting her, he proceeds to verbally and emotionally chastise her by saying “would you be quiet, you’ve embarrassed me enough!” as well as “now the whole world thinks I’ve got a talentless loser for a daughter!”. And I don’t know if it’s just me, but I saw the scene afterwards of her crying in her bed not now from the misunderstanding of her “firing” but from the latter scene of her dad’s verbal abuse and lack of love towards her in that moment 💔 When the former part came up in the theatre, my jaw hit the floor. I heard some gasps as well. I was *not* expecting that kind of cruelty especially towards his own daughter. Bobby Cannavale did an excellent job voicing him though, I felt the intimidation perfectly.

@@nicholasstansbury6848 I actually imagined that Jimmy Crystal would actually be somewhere in the top along with Sergei, El Macho and even Balthazar Bratt. In terms of Crystal being powerful on top of the title and power that he gets as a media mogul, he has been shown to be very physically strong when he's angry (despite him not being physically big and bulky in muscle) as shown when in a ton of rage shoves a few thing off his desk when yelling at Buster, "NO ONE MAKES ME LOOK LIKE A FOOL! NO ONE!" and when he receives the news that Buster has escaped he is able to smash open doors and even knock over even the heaviest statues and before his final attempt on killing Buster when his cat assistant Jerry tries to free him, Crystal is also strong enough to even kick the gates open with his foot. In terms of brilliance, he would be ranked somewhere in either Average Folk or College Bound as he has been shown to be mentally unstable with how much anger and power he lets go to his head as shown in this conversation between him and Buster. Jimmy Crystal: I've got you now, you lowlife, little loser! Buster Moon: Loser? I'm not a loser. We did what we came here to do. And there's nothing you can do or say to change that. Jimmy Crystal (followed by a little bit of an evil and cynical laugh and heavily breathing): Oh, I can do whatever I want! Crystal's mental breakdown before making his final attempt to murder Buster Moon.

I am so glad meena and Johnny got in the good area since they are my 2 favorite characters from the sing franchise and especially since I felt bad for the issues that they had to go through with Johnny's part with helping his dad with his stealing business and wanting to become a singer in the first film to learning how to dance and fight right and dealing with his evil mean dance teacher and on meena's part with overcoming her stage fright in the first film to trying and finding romance and trying to talk to her crush alfonso in the 2nd movie also I am so glad porsha didn't go in the bad and evil area I mean sure yeah she was a usual spoiled rich daddy's girl but at least she realized that she overreacted a little and redeemed herself and finally joined the cast in the show and stood up to her dad during her performance and I also really hope we get a third sing movie aka a sing 3 I really want a sing 3 come on illumination entertainment make it happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And also I still don't know why Mike didn't return for the sequel along with the rest of the cast because the last scene we saw of Mike is when he and his girlfriend were trying to get away from the bears so did they get eaten by the bears or did they survive and got away from the bears we need to know.

A detail you forgot to mention about Big Daddy is that he and his gang got out of prison supposedly for good behaviour as they’re seen doing community service. This goes to show how BD was willing to turn over a new leaf and become a better man not just for Johnny but for himself as well.

I think it's a little unfair to rank Suki so low, since she's basically scared of Jimmy. Also her actions during the climax show that she clearly was in a really abusive situation with her employer. I think it's fair to say he was the main reason she acted the way she did, because she probably feared his wrath.

when I first saw Klaus' critical and harsh demeanor I just reminisced from my short time on a music theatre school, since I could see how while practicing, even the sweetests of teachers would become hollywood directors. Still, Klaus is actually a villain for trying to humiliate Johny ON STAGE. like, performance teachers may be harsh, but they respect that while on stage, things cant and shouldnt be corrected on the spot

Klaus reminds me of an incomplete blacksmith whose teaching style is to hammer his pupils til they improve but doesn’t go further then that teaching through pain. This method of teaching doesn’t work for Johnny and it’s through Nooshy that the foundation that Klaus broke down was able to be built up and reinforced by her.

Her standards are kind of low and shallow, and she's not very accepting of certain things in a romantic sense- this is especially noted in the "iDate a Bad Boy" episode.

i would honestly say that buster moon deserves a grey area, he did try and manage to sneak in to the theater in the 2nd movie, and not to mention he lied about 10-15 times to Jimmy Crystal. Despite that, I believe he is a good koala, if it weren’t for him delivering a good show, he wouldn’t have shown a virtue of care and charity for his audience and employees

Finally, the Characters from the Sing series from Good to Bad has finally arrived. I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time since the characters from Good and Bad from Zootopia, The Land Before Time, The Jurassic Series and even The How To Train Your Dragon Series. I definitely enjoy the Sing Movies from the first movie from 2016 to its amazing sequel which is a awesome Christmas gift for me known as Sing 2 and possibly the best movies I’ve ever seen in the year 2021 in my opinion.

I would have to agree that Jimmy Crystal was the most evil Character of the list which he had proven that he is willing to hurt others over his ego and go after anyone over a misunderstanding when he'd thought Buster fired his daughter Porsha when in realty Buster was only trying ask her to switch her role with Rosita. Jimmy Crystal kind of acted like a ruthless Las Vegas Mob Boss who you wouldn't want to cross paths with.

I never saw Big Daddy's turn around as seeing Johnny's potential, instead I saw it as him realizing that while angry that Johnny was part of the reason he ended up in prison, it wasn't worth breaking his relationship with his son. So much so, that he breaks out of prison, knowing it will worsen his sentence, just so that he can tell his son how much he loves him. Hopefully repairing the damage caused from his previous harsh words.
