Singing from the diaphragm makes the difference between good and bad singing.
Unfortunately, it's a very weird feeling to learn and seems counterintuitive to good breath control.
Today, I'll show you to improve your breath support and sing from the diaphragm in just 1 minute!

what helped me learn diaphragm singing was telling myself to sing from the same place i laugh. when u laugh, its effortless & second nature. u don't have to think about pushing or straining or really anything in order to laugh. it just happens because you're relaxed. u have to learn to sing from that same place. practice laughing for a minute or two, and then try sustaining a laugh (without pushing !!). just let it happen. then try doing vibrato. the way to know if you're doing it right is if u immediately find vibrato to be easier/prettier & u feel NO tension in ur throat. if there's any tension at all, it's incorrect and u need to relax even more. good luck ! 💗

Sometimes its a matter of ”not” doing rather than ”doing”. I find that focusing on making my voice sound louder without excerting effort generally makes me able to use the right muscles. If i think too much about the diagphram and what is doing i just end up restricting it and end up using other muscles instead.

@@danielrobinson9893 it's a very common problem. Just relax yourself. Before singing check yoh have proper posture relaxed tongue jaw face neck etc. Then take a deep breath sing by maintaining posture and then repeat breth in etc. It's very simple process if you don't over think. It's all about basics that we already know about posture and breathing. It's just we complicate

Adding to above when you breath midsection expands normally not forcefully doing in relaxed way still maintaining posture. And don't let the body collapse when singing. Again make sure this happens casually without tension

I feel the most important thing you demonstrated here is the first example. It’s how the tone of the voice changes and the correct way sounds like the voice sinks deeper in the bottom. We are always soo focused on projecting and the ring tonality in the voice and forward position. But that first example is gold. People need to record themselves doing the same exercise of what bad sounds like and what good sounds like and reference them as well as how each feel. It’s not enough to know just how the good feels and sounds you need to know both, because you’re body and particularly your voice is not exactly completely under your control all the time and sometimes before you know it you’ve been doing the wrong way and not even realize why things aren’t working like usual, so it’s best to constantly be able to know how the right way and wrong way feel and sound. I keep a pretty detailed but short list of of things to remember when singing, that I have found to help me with my voice the most. If I try something new I write down what I am attempting and I give it really only about a week to see if it’s a good way or not, and I mean by what’s safe on my voice. Truth is, some things you might love to hear in a singing style or approach you do, just is not good for the voice. I predominantly use front vocal placement, roof of the mouth or top back placement. But in my style there are times I want the tonality of the throat placement, so I’ve learned to use it sparingly and lightly lean on it, like it’s a gas pedal. This gives me the effect I want at times without too much strain on my voice. Learning to sing things, as clearly as possible is usually the result you’ll want. Get a good recording of you singing it clean, meaning no push or extra grit. Then listen back and it’ll give you a map of what you like and don’t, and where you actually want some difference.

If the stomach is allowed to slowly collapse instead of maintaining the same “posture at inhalation” in which we sing through- wouldn’t that create forced breathy air pressure by allowing the stomach to release air versus resisting the collapse? Edit: I was partially wrong. Yes, we need to resist the breath but our chords handle it as long as we inhale silently, sternum/chest raised so nothing is in the way, and inhale or relax the stomach muscles at the end of a line, to allow the air to rush in. The body doesn’t need your help to allow the air to release/vocalize. Relax relax relax. This video is on point. The only reason I misunderstood is because I saw his stomach go back in quickly. Which is realistic with shorter pop lines versus long classical singing lines. That air needs to keep moving. Keeping the stomach expanded should not induce rigidity or stiffness, nor should it happen at all costs. Think of it this way, if the stomach isn’t allowed to descend SLOWLY, there won’t be enough moving air to support your singing. The stomach has to deflate. Our job is to just not let it all collapse once we start signing, but to also not tense you any muscles from the stomach to the pubic bone region.

but wouldn't you end up singing from the throat if you try to maintain the posture at inhalation? naturally it has to go back in like a balloon, no?
@DeathtotheAshes
@DeathtotheAshes 2 жыл бұрын
@@ZacharydeLima No because at the point of inhalation the larynx is neutral and the throat is open. You can’t tighten shut your throat and breathe in at the same time. Try it and you’ll get what I mean. It’s like your suspending the air in your diaphragm with a open throat, not choking it off. If you can breathe in, maintain that same feeling in your neck/throat, and not seal the vocal chords, you’ll literally feel “support.” Almost like you were about to say something and then forgot last minute what you were gonna say. It’s an open feeling, not a clenched one. (That’s what they say… it does help me tho) It’s like the same feeling before we talk only with a shallow breath being taken and little support is used. Most of us just don’t notice it until it’s time to sing something.

Getting back into singing after over a decade. So lucky I was trained to sing in a church choir by my choir mistress so I still have a bit of muscle memory in using my diaphragm, but it feels so clumsy and inarticulate after so many years without use. I've got the volume but not the fine control for more complex notes. The difference in volume and projection between singing from the throat (as my teacher called it) to fully using the diaphragm still amazes me!

My throat often gets strained quickly. This is because I’m not falling back on my breath right? I’ve attempted to check out videos on throat strain but tbh, there’s usually so much explaining at the front end I don’t follow through lol. But I notice the harder warm ups are any where you have to keep your mouth more closed. Lip trills are harder (I saw your clip on that so thanks for the help) anyway I’m chalking all this up to utilizing my air & breath control are my weak points?
@santhoshmusiclover4529

Throat getting strained is becos of breath support issues. When practicing singing liptrills or anything keep an eye that posture is perfect and upper body doesn't collapse rapidly. It does but gradually and you breathe in the next time to reset back.. body breath movement can be easily understood by following a baby how the kids body moves while breathing and how it supports voice naturally while crying or shouting

singing from the diaphragm actually means to stop singing from the throat, it helps you sound/feel more relaxed and it also helps you sing notes wholly instead of using voice from the throat which kinda sounds a bit strained and bad. in my opinion its one of the best advice that actually helps you with your voice.. youll understand it if youve been singing for a long time
@joshdaniels2363

@@altaccount-kk2yd But you're ALWAYS "singing from the diaphragm" AND "singing from the throat." The diaphragm is the main muscle of inhalation, so if you're inhaling, you're using it (most often without any conscious thought). Your throat is where your larynx and vocal chords are; kinda hard to make sound without those. This is why it's confusing. Like, I'm glad that you and others have been able to intuit what is meant by it, but there are lots of people who find it completely, bafflingly unhelpful, and those people deserve to get instruction they can use.

Also, not to overload the comments, but I was sorta raised in a lot of spaces where I had to keep my voice down so I know initially there was some psychosomatic stuff I had to get over w projection, belting, & in general had basically only ever sung at very soft volumes. Particularly the last few years while recovering from a handicap & sharing a wall w my dad’s office lol. Now that im in my own space again while I’ve been learning to let go, I sometimes wonder Is it possible sing w/ proper form & technique quietly? I still desire to occasionally do it & worry I’d just be instilling bad habits & unlearning is always twice as difficult, & I’m a hard case as is.

Singing like this will damage your voice rapidly. Try squeezing your stomach like you have constipation (without singing); you will feel tension and strain radiate up into your neck. You don't want to sing like this. Instead, you should breathe into the lower back, and lean your breath onto your diaphragm. People have to understand that there is no shortcuts. I spent a year doing only scales and breathing exercises and teached myself to sing close to 6 octaves (4 on a bad with a cough without straining). You have to fix your breathing first to be able to sing properly. I know SO many people find it SO frustrating that they in vain search for some kind of other way or say it's not a valid explanation, but all top voice coaches have been saying this first thing first day for hundreds of years. It's the most basic thing, and yes, it's SO frustrating to have to re-learn how to breath - I get i! But there is no shortcut. Singing well is really really hard. The health benefits tho, outside of the fun side, are amazing and well worth the effort!

Nooooo. This video is wrong. You need to breath in with a deep belly breath and then start singing with a relax throat and keep your jaw relaxed too. Larynx needs to stay at a neutral position and all of that will come easy with breath support. You will need to take in a very little amount of hair and when you go in to sing in that exact moment you will stop breathing. There should be no pause from when you are breathing and then singing. You breath and then sing without any pauses. This tricks the body to think you are still breathing so all of those muscles that are doing work to power your body for breathing will be tricked to power your voice. 🤘

Tensing the muscles is considered locking and is basically belly strain and even tho it’s not strain in the throat we still don’t want any strain.

@@CS-lk2wg This video is wrong, and you're wrong too. The diaphragm is involuntary during phonation. It cannot be controlled. I don't know why people doesn't study the body properly before spreading this bs. Many doctors would be pretty mad at reading this.

@@CS-lk2wg Strain in the belly is strain in the throat, torso, and neck muscles. It constricts the false vocal folds, which can be detrimental to vocal health.

@@CS-lk2wg It’s not exactly wrong. The stomach needs to be relaxed. There shouldn’t be any rigidity or stiffness in the stomach when we exhale and vocalize. This video isn’t wrong, it’s just because it’s quick, his stomach almost seems like it’s collapsing, which is what we shouldn’t do, but it does have to go back to its initial state of flatness in order to have a steady tone. If you force the stomach open and completely lock against it flattening, that is tension and your throat/tongue/neck/jaw will reflect it. Nothing should be rigid or stiff or locked or forced.

Oh my this advice is so, so wrong. You're pushing your stomach outwards, that is not what you're supposed to do at all.

Wrong, don't contract in. The abdominal muscles need to fight against the natural tendency to pull in. This is the right kind of tension that allows for the free flow of breath and stabilizes the larynx.
