"Head and shoulders above" quite literally ! You don't realize just how tall all of the Home Free guy's are til they 're next to other groups. It may lend to their stage presence along with just how charming they can be. This added to their awesome talent it amazes and saddens me they are not more famous than they are.

Oh my heck! I love it. As others have mentioned Home Free’s season was much shorter than PTX’s season...fewer groups, shorter performances, half the prize money. Home Free came into the competition with an established sound and their touring experience which really showed in their performances where as PTX members came together literally the day before their audition and they really developed and evolved during the season. At this point in Home Free’s Season 4 competition there were six groups left and each group was paired with another for an Ultimate Sing Off performance. In earlier weeks the Ultimate Sing Off was a battle between the bottom two groups for the judges to decide who would go home. Home Free was never in the bottom two which is why Austin was patting himself on the back for not having been in an Ultimate Sing Off before during the intro package. Two groups went home at the end of this show but not the Filharmonic (they ended up in 4th place). They are also still together as a group. Interestingly the Sing Off Tour following this season was made up of Home Free (winners), Filharmonic (4th place) and VoicePlay (5th/6th place). Second place group Ten was made up of singers who came together for the competition and most had day jobs. Third place Vocal Rush was a high school group so neither of them was available to tour in January. (Phew, that’s probably more than you ever wanted to know!)

Sidenote, when Ben said "beat box off", he didn't say the word box so they had to have a do-over, hence the reactions from the other folks on stage. I think HF deserved to win and I love that they had such warm relationships with the other groups. They are an authentically nice group of guys.

From what I’ve heard (I didn’t watch the shows live): After PTX won season 3 (2011) and the label dropped them within a week “because a cappella isn’t marketable” the network had to find a new label to work with. I also dont know what the ratings were like for season 3. Season 4 took place in 2013 with fewer groups and a more compact format.

Yes. Season 3 with PTX was four episodes longer than Season 4 with Home Free. There were more double eliminations in Season 4 so fewer battles with everyone. I agree that the competition was stiffer in Season 4. Love PTX...but I think their higher popularity has a lot to do with youth, costuming, and mainstream music. Home Free can sing ANYTHING and make it good. They don’t dance or wear pretty clothes. They appeal to people of all ages because the music and sound is phenomenal. Their live shows have people ages 2 to 92. They bring the world together through their music. So good.

What happened in season 3 was that while the show was being filmed, there was a change in leadership at Sony's Epic records, the label which was to sign the winning group. LA Reid (of LA Reid and Babyface) was the new guy at the top, and he was the one who decided that the winning group would be cut, regardless of their talent, because a cappella was a niche market at best. For Home Free, the recording contract was with Columbia, which is another SME label. RCA, which is the label for Pentatonix, is yet another--Sony owns a lot of well-known labels here in the US, and they have proven adept at dealing with a changing playfield, which is why (after the success of Pentatonix and the "Pitch Perfect" movies) "The Sing-Off" was revived, despite the lackluster ratings of the third season.

Btw, Joe from the Filharmonic was in the same college acapella group Fermata Nowhere as Avi Kaplan from PTX! I’ve seen concert outage of the two in the group in 2009-2010, maybe earlier. And if you look up any of James Corden’s musical challenges on his late-night show, they always feature The Filharmonic as backup singers.

A lot of people don't notice Austin give "the finger" after the beatbox-off. They hug, he gives a thumbs-up, then to the finger. I honestly don't thing "that" is what he was doing though. But a funny visual anyway. Loved this performance, I can see why both groups advanced.

That was the last show for the Sing Off... it was shorter then all the other ones and was 1/2 the $$ in prize money from the past ones also. They did a Christmas special the following year that Home Free was guest on .. This is always fun to watch~ Thanks~

The assessment from Jewel was accurate for the time. Philharmonic were young and needed the experience that HF walked in with. After season 3, the show was cancelled, and PTX among others fought to bring it back. Keep in mind 1 week out from their win, that recording contract prize vanished like mist in the summer sun... no one had faith in an a-capella group being successful. This is pre Glee (tv show) and the a-capella movie that I can't remember the name of right now. PTX fighting, and the movie / TV show being a thing and being so successful made today a different world. Today this show would have better traction. The show was eventually renewed with a shorter format because of the clamour, but suffered similar issues with the prizes. Home Free had to take to KZbin also to make a name for themselves in the broader world, even with PTX being a success and bringing a light to the show by performing on it (I Need Your Love). Networks just didn't have faith... and record execs were blind to the potential.

It ran 5 seasons, but season 4 with Home Free and season 5 were cut shorter. The had 10 groups to start but Performance times, time to work on their arrangements and songs and sometimes 2 groups went home instead of 1. They said they didn't have the audience. Things changed for sure. Filharmonic made it to the final 4.

According to Wikipedia, Home Free ( before Tim Foust and Austin Brown joined the group) tried out three times for The Sing Off and were rejected each time, i.e. seasons 1-3. It wasn't until season 4 when they were allowed to compete. Given the fact that Home Free had performed at fairs, carnivals and on cruise ships, they were more seasoned as performers than Pentatonix who learned and progressed with newest members Avi and Kevin as they battled each week on The Sing Off. So the bottom line is if Home Free had NOT been rejected, they would have gone up against Pentatonix. Also keep in mind that prior to Tim Foust joining the group, they did very little country songs.

"Sing off" had been cancelled once before, but was brought back for a shortened season with the judges doing all the voting (no phones). It was cancelled again after this season, this time for good.

Actually, there was one more season after this. It was a short season, as well. I don’t even remember any of the groups or who won.What I do remember is that Home Free and Pentatonox were invited back to sing (not with each other). Home Free sang “Stand By Me”, and the judges, along with guest judge, Patrick Stumpf, joined in shortly after the first verse.

carty43 Actually there was one “season” after Home Free’s win in season 4. It was only a single 2 or 3 hour episode... I think it was like a holiday special...and Home Free came back to perform as the reigning champions. Some college group won the cash prize and no recording contract was involved.

Seasons 1, 2, and 4 were Christmas special miniseries shows, burnt off in two weeks in December. Season 3 was the one time they tried to expand it to a full fall-length season, with more groups competing (16 vs. 8 or 10), and the ratings sucked. The big plus there was that PTX was able to develop their sound more over the longer runtime. I can’t remember for the first two seasons, but I know that for this season, #4, there was no viewer voting like there was for #3, which had call-in voting on the top 3 to pick the overall winner. Season 4 was completely prefilmed during the summer.

There were six groups performing during this episode, and from what I gather, they were planning to send the winner of each pairing along with a "wild card" losing group into the last episode before the finale, but they ended up keeping two losing groups and eliminating both groups from one of the pair-ups. The groups that were eliminated were Voice Play and the AcoUstiKats (from the University of Kentucky, hence the awkward capitalization). The last group eliminated before the finale was The Filharmonic. The socond and third place groups (from the other pair-up) were Ten and Vocal Rush. Their face-off song was "Fame", which was really good (you might want to check it out or react to it).

When you get a chance you should you also view the Sing Off opening numbers that involve the surviving groups of the previous week, especially the PTX season. You'll get to see more of the competition as well as the growing prominence of PTX as they get to the finals. These are elaborate, complicated musical numbers. Imagine having to set up the audio and mikes for so many singers! You'll find these performances on the Jim Caldwell channel. PTX makes their first appearance in Episode 2 because of so many groups.

season 4 was actually cancelled before it was supposed to start but they renewed it late in the season and then the show was cancelled totally before a season 5. they did do a christmas special they called season 5 but that was the end of the sing off and i imagine that is why it was so much shorter!

I really like Home Free's playfulness and sense of the silly (re- their video of Grandma Got Ran Over, with Tim in pajamas). They are however, a dead serious professional vocal group with a good eclectic line up. Personally, I'm torn between Home Free and Pentatonix for a favorite. They'll just have to teeter together at the top of the heap.

The Home Free guys are all very tall. Austin is 6' 1 and a 1/2, Rob at 6'4", Tim 6' 3 3/4, Chris 6'3", and Adam at 6'2". Add in the heels on their coyboy boots, and these guys tower over everyone else. It really showed when they came back the following year and sang with the judges. I had to laugh because one of the judges that year- (Can't remember his name, but he's the lead singer from the group called the Fall Out Boys)- fit under Tim's armpit and still had room to bounce up and down. lol! It's on You Tube , also. Thanks!

The Sing Off was never a ratings giant. After Pentatonix won, it wasn't officially canceled, but it wasn't brought back the next year. It barely got renewed two years after Pentatonix won, which is the season Home Free won. Home Free was actually the first champion to be crowned by the judges and not by live voting. I'm pretty sure Home Free would've won if they did live voting that year, but oh well. The ratings were low enough that the 4th and 5th seasons didn't warrant live voting, which is too bad. The 5th and final season was a one night only, holiday special. I don't even remember who won that year

Ben actually didn't say "box" in "beat box off", they added that in post..This The best collab. in all Sing Off Seasons! The ratings for Ptx 2011 Season 3 weren't the best (scheduled badly), so they weren't going to do another year 2012, but fans wanted this uber-talented show back. then 2013 Home Free Season 4 came back but shorter season, then they did one last short Season as a 2 hour special! :(

Adam was DEFINITELY the BEST Beatboxer! I also do not think that the Filharmonic's were even close to Home Free. Regarding the starting vocalist for each group, Austin wiped Filharmonic's clean IMO! Rob was excellent as the Gofer! The Home Free Gang were and are a better cleaner & clearer group vocally!
