Great to see the Britannia club and swimming pool happy days 1965 the best bar at the time seemed to be the Newzeland bar it had air conditioning. Went everywhere with Trishaw Best place for a shave with cut throat razor was Raffles Acade ( the original one) you felt like a new person after. Got chased by a cobra opposite the Britannia, one of the snake charmers left the lid off his basket. I could go on and on, great times..

Van Kleef Aquarium, great place to visit, they actually displayed the deadly Pirhana Fish there, amongst a great selection of sea life,I believe the Aquarium was the idea of a Dutch Gentleman who had a relationship with Singapore. So sad to see it had been demolished,The National Theatre too was a great building but alas,it suffered poor build quality and was also demolished. Having gone thru the years of Singapore's amazing GROWTH periods, I note that NO-ONE has mentioned the Bill Bayley's Bar which was situated behind or near Orchard road at the YMCA/ Kepple Pianos Shop area, I frequented the bar as it was alleged that the famous song,'Wont you come Home Bill Bayley' was written about the gentleman who actually owned the bar, he was a great Vaudeville type apparently. The bar itself was in one of the those Beautiful Huge Mansion Homes (built doubtlessly in the twenties for a rich European or Chinese owner),finally ending up in the fifties as a Bar and at the rear, Rattan Furniture was hand made,it wasn't the usual rough and tumble serviceman's 'grog shop'. nor was it a Pick up joint for naughty girls, rather a homely, quiet and roomy place of lounging around and chatting with pleasant people.Notably too was the fact that in the dreadful Japanese occupation the Jap Kempetai Used the YMCA as interrogation rooms,. Another feature of Singapore at that time was the Queens Hotel at Mt Elizabeth, owned and operated by my Sister in law Ho Peck Sim, an other relative owned the 7th Storey Nite club and a brother in law opened the Hollywood Cinema at Geylang, along the Tanjong Katong road,Ultimately it became a super market and two years ago when my wife and I were visiting Singapore again,we noted the area was marked for even more new Buildings.Having watched, closely Singapore since my first stay there 1956-60,It has amazed me at the massive changes and progress which has taken place over the years from 1956 until today. 65 Wonderful years. Wow! Incredible, amazing, unbelievable changes and transformation of the city since then. Hardly recognisable compared to today.
