Lived in singapore for 5 years, you need to try the local food much more. You’re not going to have a good experience based off going to the most touristy spots in the centre of the city. This is like judging London based off going to Soho and Hyde Park, rip-offs as well

Appreciate the comment and info. Where would you advise we check out next time? We had 4 nights, so a fair few places we ate at that I didn't include. We did have a Nandos as we haven't had one in 4 months :) Soho and Hyde Park are insane... but you've gotta admit Singapore is crazy from a price perspective... Also, on the food front I am severely allergic to nuts so I have to be really careful on where I eat. I really wanted to try some of the places in Chinatown, but there was an array of Satay on the menu :)

@@gazwrighttravel ah damn, the nut allergy is definitely a big one! You have to head to a local hawker centre, Singapores culture is 100% based around food. Lau pa sat is good even though its in the centre but I would recommend going to Maxwell Food Centre. Even better the beers will cost you only a max of 10 SGD per pint! The food will be around 5 SGD and this is how you live as a local. I would also recommend the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which is a UNESCO site and filled with residents rather than Gardens by the Bay which is overrated imo. I will list foods you have to try (barring nut allergies): Chicken Rice Bak Kut Teh Chili Crab/black pepper crab Roti canai Nasi Goreng And honestly so many more! When I lived in Malaysia and visited Singapore I didn’t like it, but it really grows on you when you live there and the lifestyle there is easy, so I understand your frustrations

Singaporean here. Born here in 1962. So I am literally a dinosaur now. Is Singapore expensive - heck, yes - cars (US$100,000 for a basic Japanese car, US$400,000 for a small apartment, etc). But how did we survive? Basically, I work very very hard and I save save save. We cook our meals at home or eat at hawker centres. You can get a decent meal for US$3 and if you throw in a coffee, it is another US$1. A fish and chip meal in the hawker is about US$7. It is really affordable. I was in Iceland a few years ago. Fish and chip in a cafe cost US25 and if you go to a restaurant (which i did), it became US$40. So in summary, you can have a really enjoyable holiday here on the cheap and forget about those hotels' cocktails - it is simply not worth visiting. Please visit Singapore again and visit the hawkers - I highly recommend Chinatown Complex and Maxwell. If you venture out, you can try Zion Road Hawker (at Great World City MRT). You won't be disappointed.

Not sure how you got that vibe :) I live near London and have travelled to NYC and Scandanavian countries - I am well versed in 'expensive countries', but I thought Singapore was on another level. I do appreciate the feedback people have given that we only went to the super touristy place. But it was my first time in Singapore and we are tourists so wanted to go to the most popular places. I'm not sure how many of my videos you watched but I am severely allergic to all nuts, but mainly peanuts so I have to be really careful what and where I eat. So I often have to avoid street food and there was alot of satay sauce on the Singapore menu's in the hawker centres, where I pre researched had more 'affordable' food options. Singapore’s safety, cleanliness and convenience is tops in South East Asia. 99% of facilities and services work, standards and expectations vary. Easy if one speaks and reads English. Food variety is probably one of its best features, very easy to take it for granted. That’s about it. For those who love the heat and humidity, good for you. Born Sporean but never been a patriot. Hate the typical Sporean culture. Overly pragmatic and linear in mindset. Too mainstream and you’ll stand out if your orientation and lifestyle is different. (I’m not referring to one’s sexual preferences or fashion sense) Yes after you’ve seen every man made thang specifically designed to impress the tourist, you’ll be meh after that. Unless, you’ve never been to Asia. So SG is like Asia-light. Did you know, the Singapore Sling is only drunk by foreigners (especially white ones). Just ask the average Sporean on the street and chances are, 9/10 have never tried it. Possibly 5/10 even know about it. Last words: expensive and boring but easy to take the comforts and convenience for granted.

@@gazwrighttravel10-15 years ago, you might be right. But in this day and age, the answers you seek are literally just 5min. Google Maps offer all these eateries that I mention. It even tells you how affordable it is with that $$ icons. And even, you don’t know about Google (which I highly doubt it), you can always ask Chat GPT. It’s all the rage these days. My point is, do alittle research. Just 5 min on your computer would give you plenty of information. Read through the comments section, if it is just 1 or 2 person telling you that your narrative is flawed or you have poor research, maybe it is bias. But if consistently you are hearing the same narrative from people who have lived here for decades. It would be foolish to insist that you are right. Is Singapores more expensive as compared to the likes of Malaysia and Thailand and all other South East Asian countries. Yes. But is as expensive as you described it to me. No. I would disagree with your characterisation. It is incredibly bias. Here, you can get a full meal at a food court for a noodle dish between $4-5 depending on what you order. You can get coffee that cost $1.7. Here you can take your family of four out for dinner for just $25-40. And the fare would be pretty decent. A chicken dish, egg fish and a vegetable dish with 4 bowls of rice. Compare that to Myanmar and with its exchange rates, of course it is exorbitant. Compare that to say Australia or UK, I highly doubt you can cover a full family meal at just $40. That is more like the price for 2 person only and it’s a one dish meal. If you want to create content to help travellers as you put it in your video, have the decency to do some rudimentary research. I think that is a very fair ask.

@@gazwrighttravel It is really easy to do some research. Google Maps offers a plethora of so-called "Hidden Gems" if you simply type in hawker food. You even know the food's affordability with the $$ sigh in there. Or you can CHATGPT this; it is all the rage these days. I never said $1.2 beer. I said, $1.2 Kopi (Coffee). Here in Singapore, you can get a very decent Noodle Dish eating out for just $4-5 bucks, depending on what you order. You can spend just $25-$50 on "Tze Char" ordering a Chicken Dish, Vegetable Dish, Egg Dish, 4 bowls of rice, 4 orders of drinks, teas, coffee, soft-drinks and such for a family of 4. I don't think you can do that in the UK or Australia. Maybe for 1 or 2 people, depending on what you order. Is Singapore more expensive than, say, Malaysia, Thailand, or Myanmar? Sure, of course, but Singapore offers much better infrastructure and safety ratings in street food. I would not say that Singapore is dirt cheap. It is definitely more expensive, but it is not as expensive as you put it. You visit all these tourist traps, and you complain about the prices? Of course, it is expensive; it is practically designed to fleece tourists. I mean, as a local, I steer clear of Raffles Hotel. Singapore Sling? Yuck!. Sands by the Bay? Come on.... Do some actual research. There are so many good places to go to that are not tourist traps, and the drinks very likely taste much better. If one or two people tell you that your research is terrible, maybe they are biased. But if you have a running trend in the comments section telling you that your research is terrible, it would be foolish to keep insisting that you are right. If you like to give "insights" at least give the insights that is true. If you want to do "Top Attractions"..... (Ewww. Why would you like to even do them.... its boring AF) Its like going to Japan in Kyoto and visit the Bamboo Forest in Arayashima at 10am then complain that ~ "oh its terrible because it is super crowded, it is not as peaceful looking as the pictures you see". But of course, these pictures were taken at 5-6am, not 10am, and these are tourist spots. @@gazwrighttravel In Hong Kong, you absolutely have to try all the delicious food. If you significantly lower your expectations for hotel room sizes and the quality of service from restaurant staff, you'll have a great time. Remember to follow these unwritten rules in small Hong Kong restaurants: be prepared to share a table with strangers. Don't call the staff over until you know what you want to order. Order quickly and accurately, as they don't have time for small talk. Finish your meal promptly so the restaurant can turn over the table. Hong Kong is serious about business and making a living. Don't forget to visit Macau as well; Macau is worth the trip and has a distinct Portuguese vibe. The Londoner Casino in Macau often offers good accommodation discounts.😊

It will definitely cost lesser than going to a restaurant. Its normal to feel that costing in singapore is high. The living standards has always been high.
