Love your vblogs! So happy you came to Katong Joo Chiat! There are many nice little streets with beautiful heritage houses to roam about behind the popular main street. There is also a good Japanese butcher behind the main street where all the Vietnamese eateries are, and a good "shun kuey" (笋果)shop next to it. Many residents in the area are peranakans who grew up in the area. It is very hard for anyone who live in the east side to move away as the charm here is unmatched elsewhere in Singapore! Sadly, a few decades ago many KTV pubs and "dirty" bars somehow found its way here along the once quaint quiet neighborhood. These pubs used Vietnamese hostesses to attract customers, as time passed by, these Vietnamese ladies began to bring their family over once they get married to the local males. And thus the demand for Vietnamese restaurants sprung up like mushrooms along Joo chiat road. At one time, we used to see old Vietnamese grannies in full Vietnamese attire complete with the signature hat milling about. Strangely fun times, but it was also sad to see the heritage belt eroded by negative changes - along with these dirty bars and hostesses spilling off the street, there were many fights and rowdy behaviour. This classy neighborhood fought back to keep its area safe, afterall it is a residential area (property here aren't cheap). These pubs now will not have its licenses renewed once it expire. With the many pubs gone, came thw fresh air of eclectic shops and cafe as what you see now.
