Going to army is a rite of passage for Singapore boys to become men. That’s a good thing because they will be toughen up and learn to be disciplined during this period.
In my time, we served 2.5 years and 13 cycles of reservist.... My cousin who was an officer in the initial batches was trained by the Israelis...hell on earth.

Injuries have gone down a lot because we are saner now. It used to be very common especially in BMT for officers and NCOs. I suffered stress fractures on both shins and had to be downgraded. A few of my platoon mates suffered hand fractures from bayonet fighting. One even lost the tip of his little finger.

13 cycles is not the worst...one of my classmates was a government scholarship holder and officer who held a senior appointment....he was only discharged from reservist duty at age 45. We cursed every day during NS but we all agreed that we didn't want to be ruled by UMNO😂

It really depends on what rank and file the person is holding. My hubby was a sword-holder and Guards officer thoroughly enjoyed his NS days and i think he enjoyed his yearly reservists of 21 days with his buddies, the camaraderie spirit of working together, planning strategies, talk cork sing song and makan together. As his wife, i hate the uniforms he brought home to wash at the end of the 3 weeks. Its stinko and filthy to the brim!

In Singapore, going to NS is a rite of passage for boys to become men. They learned important skills like disciplined, working in teams, camaraderie spirits as well as survival skills which will come handy in emergency situations. This 2 years mandatory training enable them to toughen up and equipped them with life-long skills to better prepare them to face adverse or challenging situations later on in life.

We always denied it. But 2weeks of reservist is the best 2weeks we ever had every year. Cause we can escape from the stress outside. Is a 2weeks chalet for us. Also good to do some networking too...Although I MR already but I still miss ICT...🤣🤣🤣

@@IrenereneHK like I say our mouth keeps complaining but in our heart we just love that 2weeks of freedom in selient, and if lucky enough to go for overseas training, that's even the best cause is 1mth of dissappearance...Freedom from work stress, freedom from wives, kids, girlfriends, all the outside stress lah. You go ask your bf and he will understand. But not sure he will tell you why...🤣🤣🤣

The 2 years we had during our national service days are the best . All the sweet , sour and bitterness plus the daily sweaty body…. Our officer’s named us all kinds of names and all the knn , CCB or F words … making you feel so “homely”…

Used to be 40 days reservist training during my time. First 3 weeks had to stay inside camp or doing Field training. In the late 80's, it was reduced to around 4 weeks training per SAF calendar year which starts on 01 April each year. Time flies.

Most of us Singaporeans are risk adverse and have a narrow definition of success.. we just do what is tried and tested and follow the "step-by-step life blueprint/standard plan".....and then we compete and feel good temporarily with the marginal success or edge that we have over the other person...there is some wisdom behind this blueprint/plan but it is also a shortcoming I must admit... we need to be less narrowed minded and be more open to possibilities.

I think Singaporeans think the Singaporean Dream is the only way to achieve a decent living for the future. But I do not like the idea of it, as a 24 year old Singaporean female.. The pressure to find a partner by a certain age to get BTO at a certain time is stressful. I do not want to settle down with some random guy just because I want my own apartment :( (35 years old is the minimum age to have your own HDB)

Imagine going on a road trip overseas without booking transportation, airbnb and hotel rooms in advance, that is why having a blueprint in life is very important. For example property prices dropped and you two have already started saving up to buy a property a few years ago (blueprint)...won't that be ideal situation to take advantage of and saving a lot of money in return?

On a more serious note, Singapore would probably not be a viable nation without her reservists... like with the Israelis, all potential foes are deterred by the size of a fully mobilized SAF and how quickly it can be mobilized. The SAF has never been fully mobilized but if it did, there will be 300,000 ground troops, which would be twice the size of the British or Australian Army! There will not be enough space to accommodate all the soldiers, tanks and combat vehicles on the route from the causeway to Marina Bay.

A personal stance but maybe wrong. It not easy to maintain such in the longer term. If settle down one day, which country to settle in, his or hers? Or a third country to be fair? My thoughts 1) Singaporean men ((or most) do know how to use these electronic appliance . maybe ur boy friend special case is he is very loved and taken care by his mum at home? but at least he know how to solve circuit ,lightbulb and wifi and light bulb . 2)Most HK young adults do stay with their family as well unless they have $$$ to buy own HK property, so same situation as Singapore . 3) although u mentioned that u cant get use to Singaporean Blue print mindset(stable ) . But subconscious you love him and will marry him because he is stable and most woman want stability . IF he is not stable (without a plan ) , maybe u wont be with him in first place or for long especially at ur mature age stage . i v sure. Your B/F serve 2yrs Full Time NS. I served 2.5yrs. His reservist 2 weeks and for 10yrs. I served 16yrs and many times 5 weeks overseas: Thailand, Taiwan ... Very interesting life won't change any part of NS. Singapore combat NSMan are trained in 3 weapons: - * SAR21 (or AR15/M16, NATO 5.56mm) assault rifle, * Ultimax LMG(Light Machine Gun, NATO 5.56mm) * M203 Grenade Launcher 40mm and others: * Belgium GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun, 7.62) * LAW (Light Anti-Tank Weapon) - ... and other explosives, weapons, mines .... etc. Can be quite fun for man. But XiBehSiong!! I think you must go for NS Open House, actually see the soldiers in live training ... to get a better understanding of what NS is about. Very serious biz for Singaporeans.😁😁👍👍

@@IrenereneHK On training course, 1-2 hours everyday scolding is normal. Once, my whole company about 120 people (3 platoons each 40 people) were scolded ('F') from 10:15pm to 4:45am. Whole night punishment, 1000 push ups ... at 4:45am they tell us to fallout and go back to sleep. But our wake up time is 5:00am for morning PT and breakfast ... Hahahaha! Another time, for poor performance, whole company was 'Turn-Out' at 2:00am with a loud whistle blast, 3 minutes full battle order must be ready. Then we go for 'short run' 7km and SOC (Standard Obstacle Course) in darkness. Very very interesting experience. Not just physical but a lot of mental, psychological ... training. You can quit at any time if you can't take it. First day of military exercise: No one is allowed to sleep. This is normal, to train soldiers for war. 2nd day usually planning is 4 hours sleep, if the military exercise allows you down time. Normal to get scolded ('F') to train you to take the psychological stress of war. Many sleepless nights, many times in the heavy rain, thunderstorm ... because war training is in all kinds of weather. SAF is very serious biz. I don't think Korea, Taiwan or any other country (except Israel) is as prepared for war as Singapore.

@@socioecohistorywordpress5268......totally agree with you but those were our era but now anymore. Nowadays, alittle bit of hard training or being punished or shouted at with vulgarities, parents will complain all the way to the TOP including ministers lah, MP lah , mayor lah ....etc. Agree?

Reservist!!!! Well, sometime reservist training do not need the chaps to stay in-camp….. but taking the opportunity to be away from the wife or gf, the guy will tell her that he will be uncontactable as have to stay in camp…… so he has freedom to go drinking for two weeks….. hahahhaha
